Hi folks, My two sons came again today to help me push on with the car (thanks again). We pushed the shell outside, gave the roof etc a quick wipe with scotch pads, masked up and as usual the rain came on. So the car was pushed back into the garage dried off and the roof and door pillars primed. It is far from ideal painting in my garage as it’s filthy inside. I really need to spend some time with the spray gun to get the best from it. It’s the usual scenario, I have the paint mixed and it’s in the gun so it’s going on. Here are a couple of pictures where we are. The next area to get ready for primer is the two rear quarters, I still have a number of areas in the body that require further filling and rubbing back. My oldest son managed to fit the two rear shock absorbers and tighten the U bolts that hold the springs to the rear axle. I have a number of brackets etc that steady the steering column and the pedal assembly. I will need to clean these up before refitting. I am hoping it will be obvious where they go as I can’t recall! I will as usual be jumping from here to there as the mood takes me. I sometimes just get fed up working on particular areas so go do something else. Please feel free to comment etc, all the best for now, Norman

Hi folks, Over the last couple of days I have been continuing the work on the doors. I have another mainly welded up but with work still to do. Here are a couple of pictures showing progress. As I mentioned before I was waiting for metal sheet to arrive. It came on Saturday morning and yes its buckled. I contacted the seller and he is going to send replacements foc. I told him it was for a door skin so it needed to be reasonably flat. He said I could keep the sheet and maybe use it which was very kind. My sons came today and we did something different (thanks guys). The weather was good so the garage was emptied in preparation for painting as its usually pretty dark in there. The walls have been painted now and it looks much brighter. Here are a few before and after pictures. The pictures are in the wrong order again but never mind. I would like to get the floor sealed and painted but that’s a job for another day. I will be continuing the work on the doors over the coming week and hopefully the new metal will arrive in decent condition this time. Please feel free to comment etc, all the best for now, Norman

Hi folks, Well after a good day yesterday painting the garage it’s looking a hundred times better. Today it was back to the door repairs. I finished of the second door bottom applied a thin skim of filler and applied some etch primer. I am awaiting replacement sheet steel for the door skins so that will need to wait. I hope it arrives reasonably flat this time. Here are a couple of pictures showing where I am at. I am cleaning up the inside of the doors as well as I can, treating the areas with Hydrate 80 in preparation for etch primer. I also made an executive decision today. The window runners for the rear doors are rotten. I really can’t be bothered trying to track down less rusted ones soooo I cut them off where they disappear into the door. I dropped the glass down and applied tiger seal to the window channel and taped the window up till the sealant cures. I have removed the window winder mechanism and the same will be done to the other rear door and window. When I get around to finishing the front doors I will see what the window channel is like, I may need to try and source something half decent. I will keep chipping away at the doors with a view to completing the repairs on them. That’s all for today, please feel free to comment, criticise or offer advice. Many thanks for reading etc it really helps with motivation. Norman

I know you’re cracking on with it Norman and doing a great job. I watched the latest video by Fitzies on YouTube this morning with some great tips for repairing dirt frames and skins.
I wish I’d watched it before I did mine the other week.

Painting the insides of a garage white is a must. Just wait till winter - you will be amazed how light it will be in there with the lights on.

Hi Mark, Yes painting the walls has made a huge difference, it’s just so much brighter in there. I just wanted the area to be cleaner too. I made a start to the boot lid today and will post some pictures when I have made a bit more progress.

That would be a bit harder as there are straps of wood across the roof joists holding a multitude of junk. I need to have a serious clear out. I was going to move the strip lights to run the length of the garage along both sides. The lighting just now is a mix of decent led, junky led and fluorescent fittings. If money was not an issue I would replace the lot with new fittings.
As an aside and taking the risk of annoying folk, perhaps some folk could offer a few words of encouragement or suggest better ways of doing things instead of hitting the like button. I like many am learning as I go and could use some advice. Anyhow thanks for reading and all the best, Norman

Hi Mark, Thanks for the link, I will look into that. I may have a spare fitting or two, need to look up at the roof joists!

That's coming along great, for the window channels as the glass and rubber channel is pretty standard you may find you can modify the ones from something common like a MGB to fit. (if they are straight suitably sized box section cut in half lengthways also makes a good substitute)

Long time reader here, was thinking last time about posting some words of encouragement as the like seemed inadequate but couldn't think exactly how to put it. You are doing a sterling job, was really pleased to see any update from you after having a break.

Thanks for the replies and advice, I haven’t had a chance to check out the front windows yet. The rears I will leave as non opening as I doubt anyone will ever be in the back at least while I have the car. I have done a bit of work on the boot lid this morning, I am trying to think of a way to get the lip profile correct. It will probably be some hammer work over a former of some sort. I have my grandson this afternoon so no car work till tomorrow. There won’t be anything done this weekend as it’s my 70th birthday. I will probably be nursing a hangover along with the family. Norman

I can't offer much in the way of advice Norman, you're already doing a better job than I could but can certainly appreciate the work you are doing and the updates you're putting on here, I think you're underestimating yourself. It's nice to see you persevering and not cutting corners. It will be a cracker once done. Must be hot old work in this weather. Put LED tubes in my garage a few years ago which came from a shop refit. They made a huge difference, but I've got used to them now and they could be brighter. Many happy returns for this weekend.

Grand job Norman - don't let the lack of comments get to you ! it's because your doing a better job than most of us! But, having said that working on your own is sometimes a bit 'lonely' ... ask me how I know
