Not sure if I have played in this thread before.
But I suspect it was 1979 Datsun 140Y SDX that started life out in white, but when I came back from my military service, my dad had, had it repainted orange with a mostly white roof.
He was not averse to having cars painted, even newish stuff, like 5 years old.
Alternately, I may already have swapped him for a 1982 Ford Cortina 1600 pickup truck
But it may have been a bit later on.

So I was 20 in 2000, this was a year of heavy turn around of cars for me, 2 mainstays were a Moonstone blue H reg Sapphire Cosworth 4x4, a red P reg RS2000 4x4 and a blue K reg Orion Ghia Si. I got in to a Pulsar GTi-R late on in the year and spent an arm and a leg at HKS and ended up with 454bhp in a 900kg Sunny.

I would have just brought my Reliant Scimitar SS1 too. That was pretty much standard except for the colour change I made when I had it sprayed Rover Nightfire metalic red.. but that wasn't until about 1994. In it's time in my ownership, I did pretty much end up rebuilding this car from the ground up as I either had to replace everything because it broke or modify it because Reliant had designed parts of it badly. Lucky enough, I worked for Lucas and had access to info of what parts they borrowed from other makes. (Mainly Ford & B.L. parts). The 2nd picture is from when I had it resprayed and the 1st is from when I first had it. Reliant Scimitar SS1 Red 1 (Mine) by Kevin Day, on Flickr Reliant Scimitar SS1 (Mine) C204 LTO Roof Down Front by Kevin Day, on Flickr Still around I believe - off the road for years but V5 issued recently? The crashed photo is from when it was in my hands and some nice lady driving down the wrong side of the road ploughed into me. Lucky enough, even though it looks bad, it was quite an easy fix.) I've not seen the other photo before. The paint shade always looked different and nicer in the sun.

5.2 V8 4 speed. owned around 1990 back in the day when insurance was cheap-ish for a youngster. never got stopped by the 5-0 either. (yet around the same time i had a Metro Turbo, i was always getting stopped in that. (Metro's were the most nicked car at the time)

Mk1 Cortina 3 Ltr. This picture was taken back in 1997.....when I was 20. I put a Capri 3 Ltr Essex engine and gearbox in it, then resprayed it to how you see it in the photo.....and yes....those are tassels you can see hanging down from the roof lining 😳

I was looking for a Cortina 1600E (a bit earlier though in '95) but never found one that wasn't a total basket case. I bought a Mk1 Orion Ghia Injection instead that I still had when I was 20 in '97. Now I think back, it wasn't a bad car to have at 18 years old at all. The Onion was more modern (electric windows, remember when they were a luxury?) and to be honest a very similar car to the 1600E really, being a relatively quick 4 door saloon with a few luxuries thrown in.

Cool.....I had a Mk1 Orion 1.6 Injection Ghia at 21. It was my dads car which he had form new in 84. It was white with the red Injection decal running down the side. I got a photo of it somewhere. I actually had a few cars all at the same at the age of 20. As well as the Mk1 Cortina, I had a 2 dr Mk2 Escort, a 2 dr Mk3 Cortina and a 2 dr Mk1 Escort 1300 sport. I used them all from day to day apart from the Mk1 Escort. I know what you mean about the Orion being luxury........ up to that point, all I'd ever owned was much older Ford's.

I was 20 in 1999 and at uni. My dad bought this when it was 5 years old in 1989 and donated it to me and I used it when I was back home and when I started work. These pics are 2002 and the day before the scrappers collected it as I had badly blown something in the engine on the A1 but managed to nurse it home on a cylinder or two. The Bravo lurking in the background was a company car and lined up as its replacement and my landlord wanted the Sierra gone so I really had no justifiable way of keeping it so scrapped it. Having been in the family for 13 years by then (and RWD FTW) this is still the car I would have back in a heartbeat (if I had managed to keep it it would now be be a sleeper lowered on banded steels with the hubcaps on). I didn't realise my camera was so bad - the Sierra is ocean Green which was pretty rare.

This. I bought the MK3 in the background from our neighbour for its 1.6 engine and 5 speed box. (and rear wiper, roof clock, loads of bits and bobs.)
