Prompted by one of the items on a recent The Repair Shop I got some of my Grandads old tools. My paternal grandad was in the Navy in WW1 and then again in WWII, lying about his age to get in and was at the battle of Jutland. In WWII he was called up from the reserve and sailed escort carriers back from the US amongst other things. I've got is WWI campaign medals and some memorabilia from 'cruises' he did around South and North America via the Panama Canal after the war, they were away for a long time. This is his seaman's knife (I was told not to call it a pen-knife) and a marlin spike (the marlin spike might have been sharpened); He also repaired shoes (I'm assuming just for the family), the thread seems to be waxed and interestingly given the age and that it's made in Britain says length 15 metres. Between the wars and I assume after WWII he worked for ASWE (Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment) in Portsmouth, I have his retirement clock (broken unfortunately). One of these days I'm going to take it all to an Antiques Roadshow, no value but hopefully an interesting story.
My maternal grandad was a sail maker at Portsmouth docks, during WWII which must have been exciting. Family gossip says he was also a player on the black market. I've got his needles, some fairly wicked looking ones.

Hi, The marling spike is for marine ropework, spicing and suchlike. The knife is fairly standard wartime military issue to all the services. The thread is still available today and is used for strength on shoes, boots, saddlework and other artisan leatherwork, so may not have any great age to it. If it has then J Wenzel is a name of Czech origin.

I was at university when my grandad died, so didn’t have the space for tools, or money for cars, but I do still have his old drill:

My grandad was in minesweepers during the first war, and then running a hospital maintenance unit in the second. He was amazingly mechanically minded, and taught me loads, especially when he realised I was bunking school to go round to work with him. ( and never told my dad, who would have gone mad) I can still hear him in my head when I make things myself, and he’s the reason much of my work is overkill, he hated bodges When he died I helped clear his workshop/garage, and I’m still finding stuff he obviously made for a specific purpose, but I have no idea what it was for! Edit - now I’m a grandad myself I’m trying to emulate him, if I can do half the job he did I won’t do so bad

I went round my remaining grans with my dad last year to help him do something and ended up with this lot. My grandad on that side died over 20 years ago, and I never remember him being particularly into making stuff or anything. To me, He was a gamekeeper and loved the outdoors. But apparently he was a trained cabinet maker and joiner. Some of this stuff is actually pretty ornate/high end, and all comes stamped up with the family name. I had almost everything belonging to my other grandad, as he was an engineer. I lost various stuff in the workshop fire but do still have various things of his in my toolbox.

My Grandad on my mums side is where I get my tinkering and skip diving from.
One of 13 children he grew up having to make things last and repairing so he was a dab hand at most things.
His family were coach builders (in the car sense) so I think a lot of the carpentry tools I have may have been passed down to him. I have a number of nice rosewood and brass tri squares, sliding bevels and marking gauges like those above. I'm a chippy myself so it's nice to be using stuff that might be 2 or 3 generations in the same family.
I've also got lots of good old British spanners and the like, King Dick etc. Never get to use them though as I've not yet had a car that old.
Hopefully get to pass them on as my 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son love a bit of spannering.

Carrying on the nautical theme , my Grandad was in the merchant navy in WW2 doing Atlantic convoys . Sensing that was too dangerous he thought he would join the army and ended up in the jungles of Burma !
Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire !
He had a couple of garages and they were both stuffed with all sorts of woodworking gear and stuff he collected in surface . Full saw bench , dozens of planers , every mechanical tool under the sun . He worked as a engineer in the army and then a farm estate manager so could make and fix anything . He had a huge metre high or so ships glass lantern in his garage as well as his dispatch riders gear , great big rubberised coat , gauntlets and boots as well as most of a Harley WD if that was the wartime model [ Finished at a dispatch rider at castlemartin in Wales]
I would have loved to have had something of his but within days of him passing my uncle got there , took his shotguns , airguns and some other firearms he may or may not have had and stripped the garages and through 99% away at the local tip . I really don't know why and its been a issue of contention ever since .
Never mind the setiment it was just a plane waste of tools that you just cannot buy in similar quality now .

One of my nightmares (well not really but..). If I ever have to clean the house and garage of my Parents (now both 76) I will get a second set (as I have a rather comprehensive collection myself) of full equipment for my workshop (including welder, lathe all top class European quality tools like Stahlwille, Hazet, Kemppi etc.) which I never can sell or give away from my hart.... My father also cherishes the Gedore tool set and box of my Granddad who passed away in 98. Being a third generation car nut has advantages but also some thoughts.. Thom

i rarely watch an episode of repair shop without a tear in my eye , and occasionally rolling down my cheek! some of the stories are lovely and the craftsmanship wonderful to watch. i have a few bits and bobs of my grandfathers tools , he was a tool maker and all of my late stepfathers tools , he was ex RAF M/T. i was gutted a couple of years ago when my granddads old weller soldering iron gave up the ghost after 30+ years in my possession alone , as aside from the sentimental side , it was a bloody good iron!

To follow up on sarkie83 and Dez posts a couple of other tools I have, the hand drill gets used a lot and apart from a sticky chuck works great, the adjustable square (that doesn't sound right) is really useful. The clamps just work and also get used a lot.

the adjustable square (that doesn't sound right) is really useful. Sliding bevel gauge - great piece of kit. I have a large chest full of similar old woodworking hand tools that I need to sort through. They came from helping clear out my late grandfather's garage after he died the other year, and some of them were probably his father's.

I think it was 1980 when my grandad passed away, we used to visit on a regular basis and he was always making stuff but when he passed all the vultures(relatives) that never used to visit appeared and cleared the garage apart from this that was laid on a ladder hanging on the garage wall out of sight A nice hard wood spirit level with a rather un-pc label! And also a tobacco tin of the usual obscure brand full of bits & bobs, he was in WW2 so I'm assuming some parts may be gun related? the blank cartridge is a 303

The two items with holes look like some part of a trigger mechanism . Intrigued by the top three items .

There’s a pattern appearing here, I wonder if when I snuff it, my grandchildren ( I only have one at the moment) will be as keen to keep my tools and so on? As I said earlier, I’m intending to make sure mine are mechanically minded too, he’s only 11 months old at the moment and education has been completely curtailed by these events, but I’ll pick up the reins as soon as possible 👍

Quite a lot of leather working tools going on there, my dad and grandad were cobblers and leather workers, Wenzel thread and those wax sticks bring back many memories.

Ah I wondered what the 'sticks' were. Slight car related anecdote back before it was a classic with my dads help we repaired the hood of my Herald 13/60 convertible by sewing in a new rear window using similar (or the same) thread.

Do any of you ever wonder whether your grandfathers are watching you from the other side? I do. Ive had several occasions when that sort of thing has been pretty much confirmed to me, but everytime I describe what happened, it almost sounds like nonsense to me. About 60% of the tools ive got were inherited from my dad, and theres a handful of woodworking tools that were my grandads, nothing really interesting for here though.

I don't mind if my passed over friends or family are watching me from the other side i have often felt something is there and living in a house where my parents passed away in it can make people feel a bit odd but i often lose a tool and just laugh as my dad used to often hide a tool when i was working for a joke.
