hello I am new here and don't even know if I should be, I hope someone may be able to help. the relay I have found cutting out quicker than it used to has been changed and the problem is still there. in winter it needs more time [ about 5 seconds and is cutting out after 2or 3] there is a sealed pressed tin box with a wire that goes into the harness and the other wire goes to another relay so I have 2 relays and the box close together near the battery. I got another tin box and have discovered that once the engine is ticking over whichever of these boxes is fitted they both get really HOT is this normal? I checked the heater plugs on the engine and on the bench and according to what I can find the resistance is ok, there is no manual for this van and I can't find any thing anywhere plus I am in the steam age when it comes to computers. any ideas would be something to go on thanks

My old cavalier diesel used to be a bit like this, check the heater plugs are actually working, with them out dip what will be the hot end in oil and connect to 12v briefly, it should start smoking virtually instantly.
I messed about changing relays etc but it made no difference to the length of time the light stayed on but what I did find is that they stayed turned on for 30 seconds or so after the light goes out so I let the light go out then waited another 10 seconds or so before turning the key.
I would check all your connections are really clean on the unit that is getting hot.

i have found the box and the wire that goes into the relay cool down when the engine has run a few minuets, they don't get hot while glow plug light is on, I will investigate further regarding the glow plugs this is the box  |

That tin box is some kind of thermostat, one wire will go to a sensor and as the wires have a heat proof sleeving and the contents is encapsulated I guess its meant to get hot, else where you will also have a glow plug timer which is a black plastic box with 2 plugs and also a glow plug relay, I don't think I have any Midi wiring diagrams but you could try searching Isuzu Fargo as that's what the Midi is based on but built under license in the UK

thanks for your response, I found out it does cool down when the engine has run a few mins,the glow plug relay is next to the box I found the correct one by having my hands on both relays when a friend turned on the key, one of the wires on the box goes to the other relay and the other wire disappears into the harness. I will look for what you have suggested , I have looked all over for a timer as yet can't find one, hope I find out what's going on before winter, haha at the moment it starts

gtviva I have done some glow plug research and discovered they don't like oil film. the engine has all been done on this motor except the valve gear, it was put back on the road in a hurry by my brother who didn't have time to sort the head. when it starts it burns off the oil that has run down and clears in a few seconds. my plan is to bite the bullet and fit new plugs because it has now done 85000 on the same ones. if nothing changes I will attack it again , cheers

The glow plug timer/controller should look something like this, which will be under the dash I think  Not sure what resistance you found when you measured the glow plugs but they should be about .5 ohms each and they are 5 volt so I guess that's what the tin box does is to drop the voltage |

hello again it's been cold this morning so I tried the van, they cut out after 2ish seconds and eventually it started. the heater plugs were two 3ohm and two 4ohm. I have found the controller!!! , took it off looked inside it and ran off, two thousand resistors, chokes, capacitors and such stuff. put it back on and turned ignition on and counted 1-2-3-4-5!!! and fired up, jumped about a bit wondering if this was a fluke so i left it for ages went back counted 1-2-3-4-5 and bingo. thanks for your input very helpful . no doubt I will be back if it goes back to two second mode, look out for me please I think I may be getting somewhere , we will see..... at the moment fingers crossed something was amiss with the connection plug----- I hope. cheers

been on a run got engine up to temp, stopped it started it with same 5 second heat time , hope it will be ok if it isn't first thing I go for is the connection on the control box, it has been a learning curve that started off last year breaking the seals on the relays and cleaning the contacts.. fingers crossed and now I have a spare tin box and relay

for any body watching this post, after all the time over 2 years messing with relays and heater plugs etc, the answer now is it was the timer plug connections that had never been disturbed and even though they looked clean with being under the bulk head behind the fuses they must have had some resistance . all is working well again.
