I passed my test in 1997, before photo card driving licences were introduced and have always been told that it was not compulsory to have a photo licence if you already hold an old style paper one.
I've never been asked to get one by the DVLA but I think now I should, especially as I've been classed as a "key worker".
So-
1. can I do this all online. I can't find the relevant link for people in my position.
2. How do I get a valid photo at this time of lockdown?
3. Is there any other complication that I've not even thought of?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise.

Suspect difficult to do at the moment the photo part in particular - have you any other photo id ? Might be easier to carry that if worried but if the car and your details match then would hope dibble have other priorities. Take care out there. James

Just fill in the online form. You can say you've lost the original if you really want to.
As for the photo. They'll use the one on your passport. The one on my passport was taken by my phone - they aren't as picky as they make out, it seems.
Oh, and enjoy having to pay to replace it every ten years!

Providing you are OK with the hassle of not having photo ID when you may need it then I wouldn't bother changing it until you have to at 70 years old or need a vocational licence

Thanks for that. I know I don't need one from a strict legal point of view but as my other photo IDs are quite old (when I had more hair!) I think I'd like the security of having it.

Why would you want to have the same hassle of renewing every 10 years?

All do-able on line if you have a passport with a photo less than 10 years old. I've found it quite useful for when ID has been required, it is though somewhat depressing looking at the photo on mine (9years ago) how much weight i've put on and how much hair has gone especially as i didn't start with much.......

Why would you want to have the same hassle of renewing every 10 years? In answer to the last two posts, my passport is well over 10 years old (yes I've not been abroad for a long time) so probably not much use in an ID situation. Even my work ID card has a photo from 15 years ago. I know what's actually legal but I don't want to have to argue the toss if I ever have to prove who I am with a police officer etc who thinks I'm out past my state approved bed-time

It's not going to say nurse or plumber on it?
