i painted a bonnet yesterday for the 3rd time. I am thinking now there is something wrong with what I'm using rather than what I'm doing.
when i sprayed the base coat on it was hard to get it to lie right, if i put it on too heavy it seemed to make like black circles, but i kept a bit of a distance, a wide fan, and got it not far off. I did paint over the edges first, and the back corners seem a little different in the way they look. When i put the lacquer on, it was hard to see my wet edge as i was painting outside, but after the second coat, i looked into the reflection and any dry bits i gave a little more onto.
Now, day after, the silver is a mixed colour to the car, it looks ever so slightly less yellow that the car does, but that could just be age maybe? Also edge to edge. Now the lacquer looks like its been painted via an enema, its almost like its reacted somehow, its quite orange peely. it looked good when it was wet.
i painted it outside yesterday, it wasnt a hot day, but i left 5-10 mins between the base coat, left it 20 mins then did the lacquer. it was painted flat too. Gun was a devilbus gti, with i think a 1.2 or 1.4mm tip , i cant remember. Pressure was 3 bar.
paint i got from supertune in manchester, that will be fine.
i am thinking its the thinners, but i am not sure. i have painted stuff before and never had this problem. i painted a mini van and it looked really good, no runs, didnt even polish it, so you can see why i think there is something else wrong.
any ideas please?
thankyou

Lots of painters have been having issues with U-pol products reacting recently, my mate in the paint shop was telling me a couple weeks ago after he had issues himself. U-pol lacquer isn’t that great at the best of times to be honest, most other products are better to use. I have a suspicion if you try a different lacquer you’ll have no problems.

Several things - Your basecoat you don't say if its solvent based or water based - if its solvent based you applying the clearcoat way too soon - I would leave it at least and hour to vent prior to clear coating - if it's water based how are you drying it prior to applying the clearcoat - Divibis GTI is HVLP (high volume - low pressure) gun 3 bar is way too high you need to be at 1.5 - 2 bar maximum - has stated above I highly suspect your lacquer is not pulling the punches either - use a branded one Lechler / Max Mayer / PPG / Glasurit etc - finally you are asking a lot to match silver on a panel to panel basis - silver is one of the hardest colours in the trade to get right - Myself / Pro bodyshops would virtually always expect to blend the colour on the panels either side of the freshly painted panel
By all means post up any further questions that you may have

2k base coat, ive never tried the water based stuff but i was told its really hard to use unless you know what you are doing.
i didnt know the gun was hvlp, i have painted a few things with it before, and it was ok, i may have painted the van with it, but it was in my mates body shop, so he set everything up.
i have used the lacquer before, and i liked it, but now you say about the pressure being too high, it makes scene. When painting it, there was something about the way it was going on i didnt like, and pressure defo would be the problem.
thankyou very much!

painted it again today, base coat went on better this time with lower pressure. when i put the laquer on it was rough again, and i really slowed down painting it. So, i put loads of thinners into it and it went on alot better. i was putting just a splash in, i was told 10% but this was maybe 20-30% now.
its got a lot of muck in it this time, how is best to polish it?
thanks
