Maybe it is the most famous MK2 of them all? Even now, those pics show it looking bang up to date. There are precious few customs from bygone eras that could be plonked into 2020 and still look cutting edge and just right. Steve Stringers Transit.

I love a mk2, especially the facelift option with the plastic louvred grill & the surrounds around the rear lights. I worked at a huge NCB transport depot in the 80’s, we had over 600 vehicles of all types, but probably around 100 of them were Transits. We had mini buses, vans, pick ups, single & twin wheelers, high roof, low roof etc etc. The first ones had the old ‘Yorkie’ motor in em’ not great, but the later mk2’s had the DI in them & they were good, no petrols for us. We used to have a ‘list’ for the fastest cam belt change 😀 happy days.

I love my mk2 transit. It's a campervan so not an everyday workhorse but still I use it regularly and travel a fair bit in it. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/191459/1978-mk2-ford-transit-autosleeperMy mate has his old garage work one which they used to go collect broken down cars and pick up parts. Will see if I can get a pic of it as it used to look I prefer them to the mk1 and always get positive comments about it Cheers Josh

First thing I drove any distance in shortly after passing my test at 18. All pintos. All new at the time. Loved them, great things. Short wheelbase, twin wheelers, vans and minibuses. Loved the overdrive box on the big minibus. Used to pull a twin axle bar trailer with the twin wheeler van. No one else would do it but I loved it. Mini trucker.

austinpowers yup we had school teachers like that, didn’t actually turn our minibuses over, but I have memories of ‘oh look at that lamppost, oh we’ve hit it!’ Amongst other things When they brought in minibus licensing I thought thanks for that! In are case the teacher was in the clear. A nob in a brand new Vauxhall Calibra went through a red light at a crossroad. It t-boned us, and impacted right where I was sitting. The bus was flipped on to its side took out a traffic light slide about 20 metres and came to rest in a bus stop. Luckily we all walked away and I only had a black eye. Ironically the police said that if I had my seatbelt on I probably would have been killed on impact.

Imagine blending some of those wide rear arches onto the front arches and slamming it.

They did that with the much prettier Mk1 Supervan.

I remember being in an automatic Mk2 transit van and loved the 3ft gear selector!

Stumbled on this from an old free local rag when masking up the luv pug earlier. Someone has made a replica of this using the model I have! I’ll post it when i get to my laptop. I’d probably do it in yellow if it hadn’t been done. Thinking of doing a band van

I remember the old twin wheel Mk2 Transit Minibuses at school - they were slightly ratty but one of them was quite quick for a Transit - don't think it'd had any special work done and it wasn't a V6 - may have just been a "good 'un".
There used to be an old Robertsons Hire green Transit that terrified the local boy racers in Clacton in the late 80s - it had been fitted with a 3.1 litre Essex V6 and went like stink up to about 50mph. Made a lovely noise too. The best bit about it was that it looked totally stock - just a single rear wheel SWB Mk2 that looked slightly ratty. As a 16-year old I always fancied building one - not much chance of that now!

Yeah I remember a twin wheel minibus my mum used to borrow from the local scout group when she took her year away for school camps. It was used as the luggage van which followed behind the mk3 twin wheel minibus used for the kids (as it has seatbelts!). It might have even been a van variant with an old bench slung in the back... I used to love it! It was hand painted/multi coloured.

Ex Police 3 litre and it still had the grille on the front that came down over the windscreen . I remember it went like stink even with about 16 smelly kids in .

I liked driving our 3 litre 4speed with overdrive on 3 and 4 riot van, but the 2litre swb panel vans were a hoot, like driving a giant Mk2 Escort, steering on the throttle.........

I can confirm that a fully laden twin wheeler will drift on a roundabout if you are sufficiently bloody minded and don't back off the throttle because you are hacked off with someone trying to cut you up.

I can also confirm they make a fair mess of a scabby Renault 19 with a back end full of filler, when you rear end it at a T junction, on your way to enroll for a day release coarse 😀 I’d forgotten about that until the two previous posts
