Okay I've got a plan. I'm trimming the forum down a touch (nothing major, just losing a couple of experiments that didn't pan out), I also want to add a forum and maybe shift discussion around a touch to give some threads a bit more breathing room.
So ...
I want to have a place for completed projects, just somewhere you can show off your cars really, rather than a full build thread. Now Readers Rides would be a great name for that haha, but it is already taken. I was thinking of maybe renaming Reader Rides to Build Threads and then opening up a new Readers Rides section for complete builds? Or maybe I keep Readers Rides as is and have the new section with a new name "Showroom" sounds a bit too much like stuff for sale ... "show off" is okay but has implications that maybe some people won't like ... what say you? Build Threads + Readers Rides, or do you have a better idea?
The other thing I've been thinking about for a few months is renaming General to "Cool old cars" or "Retro Cars" or something like that. Then encouraging the use of Question Section for stuff that is about older cars, but is more in the way of advice? But I don't want it to cross over with the Technical and Legal Questions bit. Thought about Renaming Question Section to Help And Advice ... but ... again ... any thoughts of a better nomenclature for this?
As ever I reserve the right to just go ahead with everything as previously planned, but always good to hear some other thoughts...

How about 'Showfield'? It's displaying cars in a format many of us are familiar with.

I was thinking about something like ‘cruise night’ but I guess that’s a bit Americanised.
The virtual car show? Not very snappy I know.
Part of the problem with it is it’s going to be fairly dead end threads. There’s not gunna be the constant rebumping of them with new content like there is in readers rides at the mo without them turning into build threads so they’re not going to be very engaging. I think to work it’ll basically just end up as the ‘cars of RR’ thread, and well, we already have that.
I fully agree with renaming readers rides to build threads though.

Renaming Reader's Rides and calling it Build Threads seems like a good idea to me. Like Dez said, the completed cars threads could become pretty dead end, as there's nothing much anyone else can contribute other than "Nice car" and so on. How about changing the format of the completed cars section so that there are threads or areas to post your car in certain scenarios? Such as "Your car at car shows", "your car at the petrol station", "Holidays in your car" and so on? That way people would be able to contribute and keep threads alive and interesting. But then again isn't that the sort of content that would be good for the General board? Or just one massive Reader's Rides thread where people just put up pics of their cars, that would be quite varied and interesting... I'm just thinking aloud here really...

It might make more sense as a single "sticky" thread which everyone posts their cars on, with links to build threads, rather than lots of separate threads for each car? Can't think of a good name for it though.

Do we ever finish our cars though? Strikes me that they tend to continue to evolve or become abandoned or sold.. so the finished car thread will have various iterations of the same car as it evolves, which then is almost a build thread (?) Would be handy if it linked back to a build thread though and you could browse, find a car and then read up on it, but that’s really ‘the cars of retro rides’. My only other thought would be if you could sort into different manufacturers would it make it easier for someone new to find something that interested them? They turn up because they love mk2 escorts. They can look at Fords all in one place and link to escort build threads, which then may ease them into build threads in general... don’t know if it’s easy/worth doing, just a thought (and where would you put escorts with Nissan engines?) And yeah, build threads works fine for me

Readers Rides being renamed to Build Threads makes a lot of sense, it's what I call that section of the forum anyway when it comes up in conversations and feels more accurate a term for what that area is. It also covers the variety found in this section better than Readers Rides, which implies it's just your car that you drive about in, rather than some of the restoration threads and the like that's in there.
The 'finished' car section might start out as nice show car things, but will devolve into 'look at me!' fairly rapidly with pictures of unfinished stuff, and stuff that really belongs in the Readers Rides/Build Threads area. That's fine if that's what you want, but if you want it more curated as a showcase of what RR's... image?... is then it will need moderation to maintain quality. Readers Rides is the easiest name for this area, though some other forums use Gallery instead, and people seem to get what that's about. At the moment it's the Cars of RetroRides doing this job and it's not the easiest to navigate if you're looking for inspiration of a finished vehicle. I suppose it depends what the purpose of the section is going to be, it feels like this should be more of an Instagram gallery type thing rather than a traditional forum section.
I do like the build threads as they are, but I'd also like a section I could just flick through and see one off shots of projects at their various stages. A long term thread can be quite overwhelming, so it would be nice to have an area that does show just a handful of images of a particular project at its various 'finished' stages.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. So Builds Threads is definitely going ahead as a change. The new section is really to be a better version of the Cars Of Retrorides thread, which gets some posts, but really isn't all that useful. There are a whole load of people that have completed their cars and don't want to do a build thread but do like to show them off a bit, and I think this works as a place for them. I have a plan for it to be browseable in an alternative way to the way the forum is browsed, but it needs some posts done first so I can test my idea ... also I'd encourage people to link their build threads from the first post of the show off thread, wherever that build thread may be hosted.

Build threads and readers rides works for me. I'm comfortable with showroom, but it does bring up connotations of clean & polished cars. I do like the build threads as they are, but I'd also like a section I could just flick through and see one off shots of projects at their various stages. Sort of related to this; it would be cool if the new readers rides/showroom was essentially a big page of thumbnails. They'd have to be quite small (and maybe multiple pages) but it would give a nice preview. Come to think of it, would longer loading times be a problem?

Hi, What about 'readers builds' for work in progress and 'readers rides' for completed cars with a link back to the build thread for any additional or ongoing work?

"Showcase" or "Readers Rides: Showcase" might work? similar but different to Showroom or Show-off
The General/question section is a bit difficult, you wouldn't want to have a "General Questions" section as it would likely get a bit too off topic. I'd probably have the Question section, legal and technical (though I notice the latter two are now one..) in their own "Question section section" for want of a better name, then rename the question section something like Retro Queries or Questions, or maybe just Retro Q's

'Readers Rides' has become synonymous with RR - it would be shame to swop it over so I would like to suggest that you have 2 Readers Rides Threads but with sub titles / straplines
One being - Readers Rides 'In the Making' - for the builds
The other - Readers Rides 'Sitting Pretty' - for the completed cars

What about some play on the RR theme and sticking with Reader's Rides for projects and Ready Rides (or similar) for completed projects or projects in the final (the never ending, always improving) stage? If we go into full lockdown, is there any chance of a temporary 'off topic' section? Not looking for a permanent feature but a chance to speak to the great people of this forum and to support each other throughout these uncertain times. I only seem to look on here and at e38 BMWs online so a chance to communicate on here about how we are feeling etc, would be a break from the trapped reality we are sure to find ourselves in. Obviously it's your efforts that keep this place how it is, and I appreciate that the reason Retro Rides is this way because it doesn't allow negativity or off topic discussions. I'm sure cars would end up in all the threads anyway 🤣 Stay safe people Tom

No Off Topic, never an off topic section, it's hellish enough seeing the unfiltered thoughts of car people on Facebook, definitely don't want them here.
On the subject of this thread, I think after reading through this and giving it a little more thought :
Readers Rides - Build Threads Readers Rides - Showroom
With a suitable description underneath (replete with suitable apostrophes).

After enough light shed I think that's a good way to go about it.
Otherwise, I'm with @grumpynortherner 's take on this.
