Morning all I’ve mentioned here before that I walk my dogs early in the morning due to one of them being as sociable as a rattlesnake Since I’m out at roughy the same time each morning I usually see the same vehicles, and noticed how some people seem to keep driving regardless of what’s happening I’ve seen a J pickup with a bearing failure, making the distinctive ‘whipwhupwhup’noise for the last 3 weeks A small hatch (Peugeot?) with half an exhaust for a week, and a transit pickup with no rear lights at all for a fortnight And they say that the classic car fraternity don’t need mots? Not a dig, merely an observation EDIT - Have to say, I guess I can understand the transit, as a hgv licence holder I know we’re supposed to check every time but how many honestly do

My father in law has been thinking about the cost of new tyres for his 2015 Vauxhall Antara, when i looked last weekend the front ones were down to the canvas on the inside. He says at the moment he just cant justify the cost.......

It's a lot more expensive getting 6 points and the fine that goes with it (best case) It's £40 for a pair of partworns fitted

Police wouldn't bother an old man like him, they have better things to do - Father in laws words not mine

There is that issue, maybe go take the wheels off lol.
Dangerous brakes and tyres are my biggest annoyance with people running car's on the cheap.

I think the point is, make him stop! How is your family going to feel if he mows down a queue of kids at the bus stop?
If you lack the necessary to tell him, report him anonymously to plod, let them deal with him?
Just no excuse, I've driven cars with all sorts of things needing attention (see above...) but not tyres, mate.

Yes mate, only noticed his tyres the weekend due his car being parked uphill on the drive backwards instead of forwards told him to get them sorted ASAP, he moaned about cost wont get pulled etc, I told him not to use it till it was sorted. Its his car, he is an adult and we live 30 miles from them so only visit at weekends, Thank God i noticed the tyres when i did, mate

The only way to get him to stop drink driving. The pub he drank in was next to a primary school.

I've driven a few times with dodgy bit (exhaust back box taken off as blown, significant drip drip drip from broken thermo switch, 2nd and 4th gear completely gone). These are nearly always because the parts are a PITA to get hold of and it can take a few days for them to arrive/check/find out they're the wrong ones, and I'm reliant on the car to get around. However dodgy brakes, knackered tires etc I certainly would't risk.
I like the knife in sidewall option for this tires though, preferably on the inside so he can't see it's knifed. No way that could be driven!

I know someone who has a tax/mot exempt classic. The car can sit around for months, when it gets used the brakes are usually stuck, once freed, carry on. Repeat. Charge battery. Repeat. Don't service it though. Oh no. Repeat.........

The amount of times I’ve had conversations about tyres. I just don’t do cheap tyres and honestly don’t see the point in part worn. Are these really safe? The beading being stretched 3 times! My mom would gladly pay £10 for nasty tyres 🙈 I tell her no chance. I fitted 4 new Bridgestones on the stag last May, with tracking it was £279, I don’t think that’s bad for such a prominent safety item. Just fit new good tyres peeps.
Rant over

I just bought a 2012 vehicle at 70k miles - one of the rear tyres was 2012 (so could be original) and the other early 2013!
And it got through multiple mot's with very little tread I'm sure. Makes me wonder about the MOT standard now.

Makes me wonder about the MOT standard now. 1.6mm of tread is the legal limit has been for a long time, when I was an MOT tester id look at tyres and think “jeez that’s a fail” then get the old depth gauge out and it would be just legal, nothing I could do pass and advise. MOT standards are pretty pants

I always used to use the cheapest part worn tyres due to budget. However that all changed early one saturday morning, after having the OSR tyre keep going flat it finally gave up the ghost where the M11 meets the A406.
Happily rolling along at around the limit I felt the back of the car start twitching. Next thing I know I was facing the wall to the left, then the cars that were following me, then the crash barriers. You can guess the rest.
The car (a mk5 Cortina for those interested) went from the fifth lane to the first in a shower of rubber and sparks and screaming metal.
One of the scariest parts was hearing the tyres of other cars screeching around me and thinking they were going to collide.
Something was smiling on me that morning. I avoided anything solid and no one else was involved or hurt. My car only suffered some damage to the sill and underside. Could have been so much worse.
Since that day I have been almost obsessive about tyres. I'd rather just put the cost on my credit card than take a chance.
Four squares of rubber is all that keep you on the ground.

^^^^strange, did almost the same thing in a Mk3 cortina estate years ago on the (now) A414 between what used to be the M10 roundabout and the London Colney roundabout near St Albans Anyone local will know the strange cambered corner on the dual carriageway where you get to the bottom of the hill and bear left before starting the climb up the next one Offside rear let go whilst I was cornering, let’s say ‘enthusiastically ‘ I did complete the manoeuvre but it’s a good job there was nothing else on that section of the road at that time, a Mk3 estate wants the WHOLE width of the road doing that!

ive seen cars like your observation, the regulars with their little ongoing faults. i think the worst was a mitsubishi delica 4x4 with the gearbox which sounded like someone shoulder barging a hammer drill through a breeze block. it was like it all the time i knew the person.
i don't know if its for economic reasons, shoe string no effs given type thing. i think allot of cases its just pure ignorance (they don't know any better)

I used to have one of those jokey memos about company cars One of the lines was ‘alarming and irritating noises are easily cured by the fitted radio volume knob’ 😀
