So this rather handsome thing got driven into the shop this afternoon. It seems to be suffering from a terminal case of 4-cylinderitis. Se quickly got stuck into the task of evicting the evil red-block. In its stead the plan is to locate a 4.6 32 valve modular engine. Fairly certain the engine will fit having mocked it up using the 750 coupe that was around last year. Expectations are that this will go relatively quick as the parts to complete are all at hand. Wish us luck.

Very Fast! The choice was this engine or the LS. From a practical standpoint, the LS would have been easier and maybe future performance upgrades would have been cheaper/easier. From a "pop the bonnet to impress" the 4 Valve wins hands down. That said, the solution is already sitting on the shelf if need be.

Evil red-block? I don't think so.
One of the strongest and most tunable 4 cylinder engines ever made, 350bhp easily available with bolt on mods and the original block/head/pistons and running gear etc, Swedes running 500bhp plus with the 16v head and big turbos.....

I'd love to fit a V8 in my 940 just for noise if nothing else so I will be watching closely.

Forgot to mention that this is going to be a fast and cheap project. Ideally under $500 Cnd. This is largely possible due to the Aladin's cave of parts that the owner has at his disposal. It is kinda scary really. but makes this a lot of fun. So out with the old ( note that the general grotty look of the engine bay is due to a thick layer of some noxious oil firm that very sucessfully kept rust at bay for the entire car. Power wash is scheduled soon) Grab a nice spare block and oilpan and what not and toss it in the hole That should do fine. The exhaust headers on on and almost fit. DS manifold clears with plenty of room. The PS has a bit of interference that might or might not be alleviated by centering the engine towards the DS. Course the booster is in the way of moving over, so according to the cheap and fast project requirements, the booster will have to go and only manly-men will be eligible to drive. Factory engine mounts line up over the crossmember, so only some simple pedestals will require fabrication and welding to the crossmember DS moun. The stud just needs a tower to bolt to. PS mount, another simple tower welded to crossmember Lets toss on the rest of the bits that need to fit and see what it all looks like Looks like it belongs in there! Might be interested in dropping the engine 1" by putting spacers under the sway=bar mounts, but that can wait till the gearbox is attached and we see what is what for driveline angle In the meantime, the bonnet closes overf this intake

That block looks huge hanging from the crane, is it really big or the pic makes it like that. Might be I am used to Audi which are quite a small engine. Very interesting though.

The Audi and Ford V8s aren't too dissimilar in size, they are both DOHC motors which makes them quite big on top.
They certainly look chunky next to an LS motor, but packaging wise they are better suited to some swaps than others due to header placements and so on...

The ford modular engine is freaking HUGE compared to the 302 or the LS engines This is a Ford 302 ( bigger displacement then the 4.6 modular engine) that was in pretty much and identical engine bay.

I tell ya...there is more in -and- out -shenanigans to this engine swap game than there is in the Kama Sutra! Regardless, moving right along First order of business was to get the engine compartment cleaned. There is a very thick laer of some oil that has kept the car from turning into a rust pile. Thank you very much but good riddance. The next order of business was to get a gearbox on the back of the engine so that the tunnel space could be verified. she is a big girl eh! Bit of drama as the mockup block we have is from a FWD Lincoln and the bellhousing pattern is unique to that application. One bolt lines up so we had to finagle a mount over by the starter. Engine mounts, transmission mounts and radiator mounts are figured out. Engine mounts were a doodle. Just pillars that will get a bolt run front to back and pick up the factory Lincoln engine mounts. Igmnore the exhaust, its the stock system and needs to be sawzalled in hlaf to remove Rad mounts sit where the holes are. Had to go a bit lower in order to use the factory Lincoln radiator and fan The clutch is a Miata pedal assembly and a Toyota Landcruiser master cyl. Same setup that I use on the Molvo. Bolted in place for the most part. Still a ways to go, but there she is all bolted in place with a radiator and most systems figured out. Note how much nicer the engine bay looks after a bit of time with the pressure washer. The manifold was deemed to be ugly so dug a spare one out. The plan is to airbrush the intake so it looks like snakeskin.

I built one of those engines a few weeks ago. Factory iron block, 4v factory heads, cheapo Americo-Chinese steel crank/rods/forged pistons, ARP fasteners and some valve springs. Made 1480rwhp at 27lbs boost.

Lets recap. Originally going to be a stock Lincoln 4.6 Mod engine with a 5speed. Then it turned into a Dual Turbo with an Automatic Then it turned into a normally aspirated with the Automatic Then the engine shows up last night So, as of today, and lord knows subject to change, the plan is the air to water inter-cooled blower with the auto gearbox. What is most remarkable of all about this project is that so far the budget has been $60. And that was for spray paint. The rest is just stuff found in the owners vast treasure trove of parts and hardware. Stay tuned...
