Bought a toy ive been wanting to get for a while. Went to the Southern NSRA swap meet last weekend and bought myself a little project. I was looking for a Radio flyer but this is almost the same. MTD 500 Wagon I think its a 1950's wagon. But could be any age up to about 1970 when they added more plastic parts (From my limited research) if anyone knows better please let me know! I'm not planning to do anything with it for a while, but though id share and keep this as a place holder. Going to keep the paint as is, maybe brighten it up a little and clear coat it with patina. And replace 'running gear'

Used to tow my old one behind my Raleigh Chopper about 15 years ago hauling curse word about, made a right racket goin down the road Oh this thing is loud! A missing screw and a couple loose ones didnt help the rattling on those hard plastic wheels! First thing to do is get some air filled tyres and reduce the vibration based rattling! Jake

So, i did a little bit on the wagon. Found some gokart wheels local on fb marketplace and the guy dropped them off (Keeping a good distance) and mocked them up Wheels had been sitting for some time in the seller garage. (Yes i have a shag rug in the garage) I'm not sure on the fronts yet, i might go for something a bit thinner, they have 2 bearings in each wheel inner and outer, all were stuck. But managed to loosen them with WD and some heat. Got them turning nicely albeit a little crusty. But then when i went to put them on a tube i recylced from an old lamp found they had different inner diameters? One was 17MM and one was 15MM So i pushed the bearings out and ordered some new ones. Still not sure if i will be keeping them long term. Crusty inner edge bearings.

Those wheels and tyres are awesome. I love that the back ones look wider than they are tall. I think I see a set of those on my lads Buddy L firetruck in the near future!

Those wheels and tyres are awesome. I love that the back ones look wider than they are tall. I think I see a set of those on my lads Buddy L firetruck in the near future! Gokart wheels/tyres! Lots of super wide options avaliable. ------------- Heres a a couple updates ------------- The plan is to be able to carry heavy car parts in it. And/or crates of beer. I want it to be strong enough to potentially carry people around as well. I started on the chassis today. The outside chassis rails are 1250mm long. 40x20mm 1.5mm wall. So should be fairly strong. Bolted to the tray in 4 places. 2 original holes (Slightly enlargened) and 2 new ones. Then the cross braces will have another 2 bolts in each in original holes to support the weight of the luggage. So will have 8 m8 bolts (Rivnutted) to hold it to the chassis. I've just ordered a bunch of parts including a second pair of bearings for the rear axle because the first pair i bought were 25mm pillow blocks and the axle is 25.6mm (1 inch thick) my bad. And i have some other bits already delivered ready to go. The outside chassis rails are already drilled, rivnutted and attached. The centre cross braces are to be welded, drilled and rivnutted. But this isnt done yet ----------- Finished the main chassis. I have stood on the chassis, the cross braces upwards, down, and vertical. Took my considerable weight without bending or cracking welds. So I'm happy its plenty strong enough. Welded Inside Banging chassis Waiting for some parts but ive started to put the front end together. Due to the front axle stubs ive got for a gokart they have some built in camber, which i need to basically remove with my bracketry which sucks. Because this wagon isnt going to have any suspension the front wheels need to be flat! But tricky to get the dimensions right without the new bearings for the front wheels and the bearings for the rear axle and the hubs for rear to work out the heights. But i got the front axle stub mount and the front mount crossmember cut out and I'm pretty sure the angle is correct to straighten out the camber issue, no gonna weld it up until i get all the parts delivered I also did some welding and painting on the 2.8 today and tidied up the garage and installed a third racking unit, and then ordered 2 more units. Will have 5 racking units in my single garage! Getting tight in here, but i have alot of parts, tools and odd bits! And then the second storage garage round the corner! So working on 3 projects at the same time. Go me! Jake

Cut out a couple pieces of metal and bent to shape to fit the stub axles Got the new bearings for the front wheels so was able to fit them and check heights for the front wheels. I guestimated the angle needed to correct the camber on the stub axles. Transfered to paper and roughly onto a piece of bar. Cut freehand with angle grinder. Came out pretty good! Piece of angle to measure and adjust. Welded it all up, forgot to make pictures inbetween but this is how it looks now. I need to grind down the corners rounded so they don't slice me open! Also threw some spanners on the front as a bit of decoration and a little bit of bracing support to the stub axle carriers Bit over exposes to see them properly on this photo. Bolt in the front goes through the cross brace and i welded a nut onto the back. And here is where we are. Need to make some bracing for the bottom of the stub axle carriers to help support heavy loads, prob just some triangle braces from bottom of the chassis rails I might add another brace to the top. Maybe all the way across if i can find an old tool or something to fill the gap that will look cool, or maybe just some more plate. And ill prob change the carriage bolts in the stubs for proper king pins so they move on the bearings properly.

Took a break with it Got the axle (About twice as long as i needed, as its for a gokart) Heres the front end Switched the bolts for smaller ones with a washer built in, so nice and flush with the base Installed the pillow blocks for axle And this is how it currently sits and is now a rolling chassis. With an extra 500mm of axle sticking out one side.

Any progress? I was inspired enough to go get another set of wheels and i started mocking up a lowrider version, similiar to your design lol No more intresting progress sorry! Trying to get the Capri done at the moment! If i get bored/frustrated over the weekend working on the car i have a couple ideas to test out on the steering side of things. Small update i did'nt think was worth a post, but here you go So i cut down the axle. Enough for a second project me thinks Not too shabby of a cut with an angle grinder slit disc and a quick once over with the grinding wheel if i do say so myself Did a little bit of experimenting with the drag handle. Piviot point on the bottom of the front bar and a piece of tube very lazily crushed with a bolt screwed into one end, then a long handle screwed on to the front to drag it. I'm going to weld a tab onto the bottom of the steering thread and bolt it to that. Should provide the steering to work pretty well for the drag along wagon idea. Other idea is to use another threaded rod with the steering mounted offset and tie into the one side of the steering arms Thoughts? Suggestions on how else to do it
