just bought a 1999 Mazda pickup [same as Ford Ranger] with a rather anaemic 4 pot non turbo diesel.............any suggestions as to an engine swap.....either petrol or diesel, and nothing too silly .............  |

Obvious choice is a common rail variant of that engine from a later ranger/bt-50. It’s a nuts and bolts swap, wiring isn’t too hard (I’ve done it) although you will need a full donor loom and ECU setup to get it running.
You will get 145hp and 250ft/lbs. unsurprising they feel massively quicker than the older trucks. With a map on stock components you can get over 200 horse and 350ft/lbs. and other than adding the intercooler and new wiring you don’t need to modify a thing.

What about a mx5 swap, full rusty car's are cheap.
Also the Jag S type V6 comes with a manual - they used to be sub £500 for MOT failures but starting to go up.
Same for the IS200, but prices of those are starting to go up as well.

I wouldn't entertain an IS200 swap, I owned one for all of about 3 weeks before getting tired of the V8 fuel consumption and 1.2 clio power.

As it's a Mazda, it's got to be a rotary! Buy a rusty RX8 (making sure it's had the rebuild...)
What could possibly go wrong?

There is also the 3sge, which apparently can mate up to the Alteza beams bell housing (most expensive part of the conversion) - that can then mate up to an is200 6sp gearbox.
