Much derided and downright hated they may be BUT I like them! I kinda had this fantasy that I would be driving a manual box 3.0 V6, full length sunroof open, on a nice summer evening. There was an ex Police pursuit Zephyr for sale a while back, my kind of car really.

I feel I am qualified being an old person to add to this. My favourite car I ever owned was Mk1 Granada 3.0GL ( dark metallic browm, black vinyl roof, caramac interior ). Everyone who went in it remarked how fast and tight it was, and speculated that perhaps it was some ex undercover police vehicle, however the one previous owner was Hoover Ltd. Capability of a car doesn't necassarily translate to being fun. I am fortunate to own a 500hp GTR which is very impressive to drive and way more capable a car than I am a driver, but it's not 'fun' in the same way that my old Mk1 3.0 Essex Capri was back in the day. And that is not rose tinted specs... This is why I started the thread. Everything now is about horsepower and the quest for more and more. The cars are faster than ever, too fast for some of our roads, if we are being brutally honest, and their capabilities, generally, exceed that of the person driving it. 100 mph sounds like nothing now, granny shopping trolley cars can do that and more BUT to get anything out of those bygone cars, let alone the magic 100, you had to work for it, the car too. The limitations of those cars then, in terms of tyre technology, handling etc made driving one hard much more challenging than of now. Good days. Well said Sir.

Anyone got anymore suggestions Great thread! It is a great thread, nice as it is to look at cool cars it has quickly wandered from saloons into the realms of coupês, GT's, estates, convertibles & hatchbacks. F1 cars next?

For me it would be a Triumph 2500 saloon. Though I could also be swayed by a 3.5 Rover P6.

Awesome! I always fancied fitting a modern BMW straight six into one. Then Andy Borris beat me to it with his mk1.

For me it would be a Triumph 2500 saloon. Same here, but the estate version. Just so right... That’s actually a “Dell lines” Stag estate. It’s fitted with a stag engine and built like that as new. Rear arches slightly flared. This belongs to a CT member whom I know. It’s a lovely car which I like to wind him up about telling him it’s quite obviously not a stag. Edit. I’m sure that’s Alan’s but I don’t recognise the number plate.

Although i'm nearer 60 than 50 I remember some of the cars my dad had including Consul, Zodiac, Mk2 jag, Ford Executive, Rover P5B. All of them smelled of leather and Embassy fags. We went to Cornwall in the jag, dad, mum, me and three siblings , the dog and a gold fish. Luggage strapped down high on a roof rack and i don't think we went at anywhere under the speed limit!
