This was seriously fast at the time The BMW 2002 Turbo has a turbocharged four cylinders in line longitudinal front engine providing a maximum torque of 241 Nm available from 4000 rpm and a maximum power outpup of 170 PS available at 5800 rpm transmitted to the 13 inch rear wheels by a manual 4 speed gearbox The new BMW 120i has very similar specs and is just as fast.... However I have the Turbo any day over the 120i But a modern 1 series is nearly twice as heavy as the 2002 (1,000Kg vs 1,800Kg), I've just got a 118i (the early 170bhp version) and it just 'feels' so heavy and that's from somebody that also drives a Land Rover Discovery.

If you think that's bad, park (what was) a fairly large saloon designed in the early 60s next to a modern car... The Clio dwarfs my P6 E46s are still pretty chunky!

Not sure of a 50s option, but if pushed then a Riley Pathfinder would encourage me to part with cash. From 60s it would be the big Farina,probably the Wolseley 6/110 variant or the Vanden Plas 4R followed by the Austin 3 litre, or the Rover P5 Coupe(which did transgress into the 70s). Vauxhall Cresta/Viscount might also get a look in.
Only one choice from the 70s 3.0 Granada Mk1, 4 speed, but the Rover SD1 i enjoyed for the short while I owned one.

Not sure if there’s any truth in it, but I heard that Ford had to give some Lotus Cortinas ( or Cortina Lotus if you want to be pedantic) to the Old Bill, because all the blaggers of the day were nicking them as getaway vehicles and they didn’t have anything that could keep up!
