Last summer I sold my BMW E34 M5 that I had owned for many years and wanted to replace it with something as equally interesting and hopefully as good an investment I set out looking for something different, something I've not had before the sort list was Bentley turbo Rolls Royce shadow 1 Yank station wagon Yank pick up But then I came apon this 55 Cadillac sedan and just had to have it And that is where we start this project I'm not going to do a really in depth build thread like I've done in the past for two reasons One I don't really have the time and two it seams from other threads I've read there is an increase in negativity nowadays

As the photo shows its in pretty good shape for a 65 year old car The plan was to get it up and running lower it and use it But all plans escalat The interior needed replacing due to sun and rodent damage The engine run but had no fuel tank and other parts missing Brakes tyres all shot Long story short I decided to do a full body off rebuild (no easy task with a car of this size) So this is the "now" plan Faster lower louder I'm going to drop it down upgrade the brakes wheels tyres Engine swop Redo the interior back to like new And fully restore the body and chassis with exception of the exterior paint

I love it, and I'd love to follow as much of this build as you can be bothered to share.
With regards to your comment about negativity, I agree. But there's a blocking feature in the profile preferences and you can make people whose comments you don't wish to read all but disappear. It's a great feature. Worth using.

Love the project so far, great old iron! JP Great looking project! Unfortunately sometimes genuinely offered constructive crticism and concerns for safety/legality is taken by thin skinned individuals as outright negativity and make a mountain out of a mole hill over it. Please don't let that perception hold you back from posting progress pics , actual negativity is pretty rare on here in my view!

For the very, very few negative posters (personally I just don't get them - they are obviously lacking something in their lives) and for every one negative view there are 1,000 + positive readers whom eagerly await threads which contain projects like yours

Great looking car and project!!! This to me is one of the few remaining positive corners of the world wide cobwebs and while time prevents me posting as much as I used to (that will I hope change shortly) it is exactly this sort of project I love reading about so please do share progress as much as you feel able to - oh and I'd echo Chris re the 1000 to 1 ratio! Cheers Matt

Love a build like this, I am finding myself more a more drawn towards a patinated exterior with a tidy interior and mechanicals. Also more practical you can actually leave it parked without worrying too much!

All valid points I'm not that into the whole patina thing (especially don't like fake patina) and I have put some thought into this and it goes like this if it was a coupe or convertible it would be considerably more desirable and therefore hold a good sales premium and would probably benefit from being kept standard but the sedan doesn't have the same following so it wouldn't make financial sense to get involved in the body work other than what needs to be done in the very short time I've owned this I can safely say that the parts prices (if you can find them) are incredibly expensive so if you take into consideration all the re-chroming and a full exterior re-paint it would just be to expensive i also believe (wrongly or rightly) from following other patina vehicle sales there is a good market for them all i need now is some blue suede shoes

I agree that patina has a very strong following, and it isn’t detrimental to the value of most vehicles. In a lot of cases it can significantly increase value if the patina is just perfect. The idea it’s lazy and devalues vehicles is very outdated.

I agree with Dez - the idea that patina is lazy is misguided in today's market. Whilst it may not be not be something I would prefer to have on one of my own vehicles, I totally get why you would keep it this way, and I applaud you for doing it. I love a big old Yank motor, and a 55 Caddy sedan is suitably awesome. I shall be following this with great interest and enjoyment. How did you move the body off? Eddie Hall and some rope?? The whole car must weigh over 2 tons!

The whole car must weigh over 2 tons! Removing the body was a butt clenching moment i think the complete car weighs in around 2.3 ton so I recon the body was still a good ton if you had a two post lift it would be a straight forward job but attempting to do it in the garden on an uneven surface with minimal equipment is tricky i used 3 farm jacks and lifted it in stages firstly I raised the rear a little and made some makeshift stands to hold it then done the same with the front enough to get a length of 2" box the whole width of the car and then I put the farm jacks on the end of the box and lifted front and rear a bit at a time the biggest problem was how high it needs to go before the chassis would clear i originally measured the hight needed at XYZ but not thinking as you lift the body and remove the weight the chassis raises as well so it needed to go quite high to get the chassis out so it was incredibly unstable so it was a relief to get it out and drop the body back down onto stands

Well it seams this project has a healthy interest so I will keep updating as and when I can It's a newly started project so not much to add (I generally wait till I'm 80% into a project before starting a thread so followers don't have to wait so long between posts) The biggest issue with this so far is the sheer size of it and its components It's a logistical nightmare I've had to move two of my cars elsewhere just to gain enough space to store the components The bits are just so big
