I did read that the GM diesels were part of the family 2 range of big blocks can trace its roots all the way back to may 1982 believe it or not ! the other give away is that the 1.6 and our 1.7 (which were evolved from it) are the same stroke as all the 1.6 and 1.8 big block engines (79.5) cant really miss the gearbox F number as its cast (raised lettering) into the top of the box, just below the output shaft on the slector turret. they are big too like 1.5 inches (the typeset i mean, not that its raised 1.5 inches) i have seen a couple of examples with out an F number though generally speaking F10, F13, F15, F17 are small block F16, F18, F20 are big block. there are crossovers (which i think is due to the engines being low output) with the obvious examples being our big block engines with small block gearboxes, which use special flywheel clutch combination to make that possible in that list i cant see any small block engines with a big block box!

The usual oil and fluid checks to report for the van, the driver side rubbing strip failed at the front edge, so I used some epoxy glue to stick it back. Other than that it’s happily (and quite literally) smoking about. That’s not really the reason for the update though.... I have been asking everyone I know to look out for a mk3 diesel, working on the six degrees of separation theory, I reckoned one would surface eventually. And earlier in the week one did, did some digging, checked the reg, and it last went through MOT in January 2018. It failed on a couple of bits and then passed the same day with a few advisories. MOT ran out in Jan 2019, tax ran out Nov 2018. There is no record of a further failed MOT and mileage hasn’t changed much since. I got the impression it was an old persons car, probably gave up driving but didn’t want to give up the car. So this is where it went a bit wrong, we agreed it would be dropped off in the price, he asked if Friday night, late was ok. And then he stopped talking to me... didn’t know if we was coming, didn’t know what late really meant... so I ended up chasing him, and then on Saturday morning. Anyway bloke dropping it off was fine, I said they probably thought I was an , he said the lads thought they’d annoyed me. It only needed a couple of texts or calls and it would have been smooth, I didn’t care when it arrived but didn’t want to be out and mess them around. Anyway rant over So, it arrived. The road outside my house is closed and all dug up, so he started it up (few churns, I’ll fit new glow plugs whilst it’s out) and he backed it off the truck and I got to drive it down the road and onto the drive...... not everyone was as excited about its arrival as me First issue was a broken exhaust rubber, so had to bodge that with some cable ties to get it over the kerb It’s a 1996 1.7TD estate LS, in white So has such luxuries as a sunroof, a light in the glove box (I could see that because the lid wouldn’t shut ), a rev counter, the posh clock with outside temperature (but the temp reading doesn’t work, and the date says 1992) And electric windows!!! I’m now convinced it was an old persons car And it wasn’t really prepared to get the best price when sold It’s got some grot in the usual places... back of the sills look pretty ropey. which is really good news as I don’t feel guilty about chopping it up

But none of that is important, I didn’t buy it because I wanted some penicillin The engine bay looks tidier than my van. So plan is to swap this all in and get it sorted, then swap the other engine in a bit later..... it’s a 20% hike in power straight away so might as well feel the benefit of that before adding more Engine looks pretty clean, there looks like there might be a leak round the thermostat housing. Water level was low but not empty Battery is a little 50ah one that’s been bodged on, but doesn’t matter. It started it today, will be interesting to see what it’s like tomorrow when cold Exhaust is like new (but probably fitted in 2018?) Tyres need pumping up, and then I’ll get it moved up the farm tomorrow. The short term plan is that I’ll park it up, in the shed up the farm, the Fug still isn’t back and then wait until the next announcement from the government. Fingers crossed it eases a bit then I can strip and swap in the yard without chucking anyone under the bus, which has the advantage of being flat and loads of space The x17dtl in mine still doesn’t use water or oil, is still getting about 45mpg but the blowby seems to be getting a bit worse, and the smoking isn’t getting better. So in the ideal world the plan is to strip this and refurbish parts as I go, then strip the engine bay on the van and tidy that up (can paint it red too) before fitting the running gear. But should the worst happen I can do a quicker swap to get me running again. Then strip anything else that could be useful to keep my van on the road and store it away in case it’s needed. I’m sure at the the start of this i said it was a temporary van, I’ve gone from there to a tidy working van with a few years in it, to tactically hoarding parts to keep it running forever

And the really spooky thing, checked the mileage And thought that must be quite close to the vans mileage... How weird is that!!!

That doesn't look that bad to be fair, nice one on finding the ideal donor so quick as well, ive been after a 3 door Sport for about 6 years now If the front wings aren't grotty I could be interested in them if you're not using them? And that mileage is properly strange, at least if you need to use the clocks they won't be far out

People say ‘that’s weird’ and ‘that’s a bit weird’ which implies the limit of weird is perhaps 1, and a bit would imply weirdness in the range 0-1 Sometimes people say ‘that’s really weird’, but that could just imply a definite 1 of weirdness,..... Anyway, I’m taking your response as complete weirdness, a full 1

The mk3 golf I bought to provide it's heart for our T4 Transporter had about 35 more miles on the clock than the T4. Not bad after 155 off K miles.

Properly weird that mileage. Nice find, how does the gearbox clutch feel ? James All felt fine, clutch was just like the van, I did some manoeuvring and didn’t give it a thought. Will have a look when it’s out, as a clutch is £70-80 so would be silly to ignore it (especially if it’s original). It selected all the gears, and I loaded them up and used as many as I could whilst travelling at 10-15mph and not drawing attention to myself Edit: not worth another post, so I’ll add a bit more here... Taken it up the farm and had a better drive and drove a mile or two on the track, the whole car worked, all the gears work fine, the clutch is pretty high, it was too cold and I couldn’t be bothered to pump the tyres up (I’d say they are all at 10psi, up but bulging) so it felt heavy and draggy (but most of it isn’t being used anyway, and I’ll swap front wheel bearing whilst it’s in bits). The exhaust clatters about (but it’s cable tied on), the alternator belt squeals at revs and the rev counter doesn’t work. It does have a low fuel level light and that started working and it stinks, anything that I keep from inside will be bleached!!

Worth changing the heater hoses on the back of the engine if they look anything other than mint.

We had snow, it was cold...
So here is cold start on both of them
The van was running and warming up in the background of the estate, considering it needs new glow plugs and struggled a bit, and the vans are new it still smokes less

Had my first ‘failure to proceed’ yesterday That’s the first time in the year (I’ll have owned it a year at the weekend!) Went to start the van in the morning and couldn’t turn the key, so as I was working just down the road, I sacked driving anyway as by the time I’d got it defrosted I could have walked to the job When I got home I removed the cowling (tricky with the steering lock on) sprayed wd40 into the lock and did some tapping on the lock and it then started to work. It seemed like the steering lock was on but I could hear that clicking as I tried to turn the key... so wonder if it was one of the pins in the cylinder jamming (?) It looks like there should be a boot over the switch block at the back and this is pushed back, so am wondering if there has been a problem in the past and now dust has got in (?) but it’s working again and does seem a lot smoother for a good oiling, so fingers crossed. In trying to move the rubber boot I shorted out across a ignition terminal to ground and blew a big 80a blade fuse under the bonnet, but a quick trip to the parts car sorted that except it’s wedged into the shed so getting the bonnet open was a kerfuffle (should have pumped the tyres up) I did notice the under bonnet fuses and relays are different between the van and estate though, so will have a read up on that before I start the strip down. Not sure if it’s a year thing (Haynes manual has different electrical schematics for 1997, mine is MY1997) or a Isuzu/GM thing, but I plan on taking the engine loom at least.
