Is it just me or in that top one does it look like a model in a diorama? I thought the same. It’s called a ‘tilt shift’ effect you blur the rest of the photo around the van, which makes it look like it’s a model. There are apps for your phone that do it I used a free one called PicShop Lite Just have to remember to not frame the subject too closely, you need the space around it for the effect to work

On the rear of the pump above the injector lines should be a plastic anti tamper cap covering the max fuel screw. If the cap isn't there it's probably been faffed with.

I’m going to have a rant, sorry!! On Friday night I dropped the van off to have the injector pump swapped. My pump has a slight leak and in the time I’ve owned it,!it’s left a mark on the drive Some of that is paint that leaked from the skip, I need to pressure wash the drive but was waiting until the leak was fixed first. In readiness, I got hold of a spare pump and took it to the local diesel specialists to be checked over/repaired and calibrated, I had a chat, explained that I wanted to minimise downtime and wanted it to be right....received a clean pump back, they had changed some bushes etc and calibrated it And it cost me a couple of hundred pounds. On Saturday, my pump was taken off, in doing so they had to break the immobiliser bit on the stop solenoid. New pump was fitted and leaked diesel everywhere! So was taken back off and I’ve returned it this morning, after inspection I’ve been told that the o-rings have gone hard and it needs a complete refurb. I’ve dropped the other one off as well so he can chose which to refurb, but I’ve been told that a full refurb is about £400 plus vat So it seems I paid £200 to have a dead pump cleaned and calibrated and now have to pay double that to have the pump rebuilt! All the time I am not without the van, so am stuck between a rock and a hard place... I can kick off, but that’s just going to slow the process.... I don’t think it’s even the money that is annoying me (well, OK it is annoying me... but it’s not the most annoying thing) I can’t work out why, having explained the pump was of unknown origin, why they didn’t do what they did today, have a look at the seals and advise me that it’d need a full rebuild instead of doing half a job without talking to me It’s obviously a communication breakdown, and they may still surprise me and do the right thing by me..... but I’m still vanless and flinkin annoyed Rant over, sorry Well..... nearly over.... a brand new pump is £400 off of eBay, I could have bought this for 50% less and have fitted it on Saturday and been mobile again

How have they calibrated it, if it's leaking?

How have they calibrated it, if it's leaking? They said it was bench tested, but I did wonder that

Vans back Got a call yesterday to say the pump was ready, I was 20 miles away on a job and had a full day today.... so I paid up (another £400 with the VAT ), kept my gob shut and got Lucy to pop up and collect it. Dropped the pump off last night and picked the van up today. Much as I would like to kick off, I would have had to take time out of my working day to do that and that’d lose me wages, we’d potentially argue about verbal contracts and I’d still be unhappy... this way it’s done and behind me. And no one needs to know, especially as I didn’t post it here Shiny pump My leaky old pump And what can be seen of it fitted Onwards!

I think I would be tempted to find a DIY and rebuild the spare one myself.
Glad it's sorted though

I think I would be tempted to find a DIY and rebuild the spare one myself. Glad it's sorted though I think part of my annoyance is that I was fed up with having to take the van to main dealers to do anything, so being able to fix it myself was a bit part of getting the van. I bought a timing kit to change the cam belt myself back in June, but because it came with a dti, I panicked a bit and got it swapped by a mechanic. Was going to watch what he did to swap this one... but it didn’t happen when it was supposed to, so yeah I also was thinking I should diy the spare pump and time it up to the spare engine at some point (before next cam belt change, then I can do it myself) Started up lovely this morning, no smoke*, no churning and settled into an idle straight away *probably a bit, but not like before

i'm interested how they "pressure tested and calibrated" a high pressure diesel fuel injection pump without noticing it leaking like a sieve. glad you are motoring again, how do you find the 17DTL engine in general? i have the non turbo version and in terms of architecture would be the most likely "upgrade" if it died. (a whole 10bhp/ 20lbs extra oooh )

i'm interested how they "pressure tested and calibrated" a high pressure diesel fuel injection pump without noticing it leaking like a sieve I don’t understand it either, after I took it back on Monday, they called after checking the o-rings and advised on cost to repair. Which really is what they should have done the first time. I think part of the problem is that people think I’m mad to consider spending £400 rebuilding the pump on an old Astravan, so they try to cut corners to do it for cheap maybe? Thanks, I have no issues with the engine, the whole package is fairly visceral experience, but the engine doesn’t jump out.... it’s not really quick (but it accelerates with traffic happily) it’s not that fast (but I imagine I’d sit at 90 all day on the autobahn ) but its a daily in a work van, so that’s fine with me. I think it’s 67hp, so if that’s 10 more than the straight diesel then it would be noticeable quicker. And your estate would be lighter than my loaded van, so that’d hopefully make a difference too

Your van looks splendid, love the sign-writing, the wheels and, of course, Chris/GN's work and your vision to make it happen.
Speaking of GN, I miss his posts terribly and am uncomfortable with how he's been virtually airbrushed away, Soviet-style. Please pass along my kind regards next time you speak with him.

I think your to EASY on these FCUKERS. I work as a Sparks too. When there playing with my Money theyll know all about it and I would have been asking questions. I hate taking Sh1te from people who are trying to make a Fool of me. Its hard enough trying to get paid for jobs without having to pay out 600 on a half arsed job Savage van though

I hate taking Sh1te from people who are trying to make a Fool of me. Its hard enough trying to get paid for jobs without having to pay out 600 on a half arsed job Savage van though I know, but I only got mugged for about £200, as if they’d have fixed it right first time it still would have cost the £400 But I was without a van, and though I have access to the Corsa and a Skoda estate, I have to empty stuff out and reload around Lucy’s work etc, I would have ended up losing half a day to fight about the money, they weren’t forthcoming with accepting it was even partly their mess-up, and since all communication was verbal, I would struggle to prove my case. They’d given me the run around asking me to bring the other pump in to check it’s the same so realisitically I’d still only be £50 or £100 better off if they paid out, and more than likely they’d knock a bit off instead, so would be even less.... Easier for me to walk away and move on and chalk it down to a learning experience than spend any longer not getting the result I want We’ll soon be on another page and all will be forgotten, and thanks

Thanks Been thinking about this since I messaged you, I avoided having any part in the shenanigans, as you may have worked out for my latest posts I’m very much for taking the path of least resistance. ButI think the ‘airbrushing away, soviet style’ was caused by those involved deleting themselves from the RR forum, and it doesn’t feel relevant to make comments for them to read as they aren’t here to read them anymore. Anyway, it all seems to have worked out one way or another

Van is starting lovely, so in spite of pump-gate it has been a success. Still a bit smoky when cold or under load, but I’ve been reassured that ‘they all do that, Sir’ and did a 200+ mile run this week and it didn’t miss a beat, so happy with that After the headlight incident, I stocked up on replacement lights, fronts are fine, so bought a couple of secondhand ones for £20 a piece and have squirrelled them away. The rears have cracks in them but don’t let light through (well they do let light through, but the cracks themselves don’t let light shine through) couldn’t find any good secondhand one, but a pair of new rears were £35 so I swapped them over to the new ones and have kept the old ones as spares... so since that’s the only thing I’ve done, here’s a photo or two And because it’s a working van it’s filthy, working on a barn, east-west rail and hs2 tearing up the countryside all around us and wet and dirty roads make cleaning pretty futile... but it does look better when cleaned, and since we are in lockdown anyway, washing the van is probably a high point Need to do an oil and filter change next

Bit of an update, with some back story... (that must be excuses ) been tidying up house and sheds, and we’ve broken the back of most of them, last remaining space was the front shed, we call it the garage because it’s where a garage should be. But unfortunately when we built the extension 12 years ago the priority was the kitchen (it was 6’ x 8.... lots of spaces in our house are about that size! And we doubled it, but that meant the wall to the ‘garage’, the limitations of boundaries and existing house walls meant it is a shed more than a garage, it’s 6’ x 9’ and I put some heavy duty shelves in there years ago for storage which are 3’ deep. And it was a mess, stuff got dumped, I emptied the VW out (an almost relevant sentence ) the contents got dumped in there, the cardboard boxes went soft and spilled the contents on the floor... so it got ignored Last weekend we started tidying it. Decided to get brutal and get rid of stuff that isn’t useful etc. Quite a lot of space was taken by the GSi seats that I’d got super cheap, but were a bit ropey and needed work. Had a chat with Lucy and they went! I’m bit in a position to fix them right now, I gave the headrests away and some of the plastic catches, was offered some cash but declined for good karma. So the workshop currently looks like this Then some Cesaro seats came up on marketplace, in good condition, for £100 So I bought them, and fitted them and then because it was dark and raining and the van was filthy But WOW, I’d sort of got used to the drivers seat and had forgotten how broken it was, but as soon as the new seats were in, they felt supportive and firm and I couldn’t feel the seat frame and bulkhead with my back anymore!! So.... this morning I cleaned the van* so here’s photos of the new seats, all that writing for 20 minutes work *I know it’s not really clean, but I did hoover it and wiped the dash... and it’ll be minging again tomorrow, because I get dusty and it’s winter! And I got the rears seats too, I’ve stripped the frames and foam off and got rid, but a more achievable project is to get some better door cards and swap the fabric to match

I found a 90s copy of the Sun at work the other day and I could hoover and bag up the baccy out of the carpet in my car and throw a few tab ends in to sprinkle around your interior if you fancied going for the authentic work van look.

Fresh&Minty did the builder look with the minty Acty Being a Sparky it should be the Financial Times, or something like What Furry depending on which trade you speak too Also did an oil and filter change. Swapped the DAB aerial that my Dad snapped off whilst helping me load ladders onto the roof and changed the towbar electrics socket as the bracket was cracked

I would cheerfully take on driving the length and breadth of the country of those old Vauxhall seats. Never had a car since my old cavalier as comfy! (No driving about during Coronavirus of course🤐)
Lovely van this 😎
