This thread will document the build of my mk2 jetta. I was hoping to have this finished for the weekender last year but that didn't happen so it will be there this year. Before this I had a mk3 golf which got bored of and had started to rot so I wanted something to put the engine from the golf into as I love the vr6 and with added supercharger it sounded so good. Started looking at mk2 golf's as always liked them but the price has risen to a point that I could no longer afford, especially in the run up to my wedding (when I probably shouldn't have bought any car!!). After looking at some ropey golf's the jetta popped up and looked to be decent condition so I had to go see it. Took my mate Tim who told me I had to buy it, so here it is when I first got it. May take me a while to get through all the photos and stuff.

Bit of info on the jetta. Was a 1.3 with 88k on the clock. All solid underneath and very good bodywork with a couple tiny rust spots. Had a pretty new custom stainless manifold and exhaust and new looking spax shocks and springs. Was probably too good to rip apart but wanted to start with a decent base as I can't paint or weld. First stage of the build was to swap the air ride from the mk3 onto the jetta. At the same time I built some custom speaker pods from some old door card pockets to house some 6.5" speakers as the stock ones were tiny dash speakers that sounded awful. Also fitted a sub and amp in the boot. I then sourced some cheap bbs ra wheels and it stayed this way for the winter months whilst I stripped the mk3 down.

Looking good and should pull well with the VR6 engine in there. Always thought the 1.3 was a big ask for the Jetta! Bookmarked 😎

Excellent. Mk2 Jetta has a special place in my heart, spotted one in a vw main dealer I went past on a school trip. My dad asked if I saw one as he was looking for one, so we went up and he bought it, an ex demo 86 D plate with about 15k on the clock, 1.6TX in tornado red.
That survived my brother passing his test and using it, then me passing my test and using it, together we put about 100k on it then a 7.5tonner went in the back of it about 5 miles in to a trip to Wales that my parents were heading on.
It got repaired by someone else as it was an insurance write off, and I saw it a couple of times after.
So, my first car naturally had to be a mk2 Jetta, this time in 1.6CL flavour apparently. 85 C reg. I say apparently, as when 'racing' a mate a took a roundabout too fast and oil surge put a con rod through both sides of the block. Upon removal the engine revealed itself to be a 1.8 The 1.6 that went back in it was a much sweeter revving engine. Cracking car, ended up with lowered updated suspension, GTI back axle, scirocco GTX front seats, Audi coupe Quattro Ronals, all updated stuff but still from the VAG range. Thoroughly abused, lad from the next village wrote off his xr3i trying to stay with it, ended up crashing and repair both ends of the car, and ended up trading it in after about 3 years and only lost £400 on it.
Saw it at the side of the road in south London with for sale £395 in the window shortly after, was very tempted to buy it back!

Had a gl I put a kr in, kw coilovers, g60 brakes, lightened flywheel, bike carbs. It revved and revved and revved.
I bought it 6 years ago with full vw service history for I think 600 quid. Proper hidden gem owned by an old fella from new.
And on a really boring note, an awesome car for the tip run, easy get two dead bodies in the boot.

And if you haven't from the boot check the rear suspension turrets for corrosion, loads of them have some hidden there.
You'll have to use your hand to check as you won't be able to see.

The kr loved to be revved hard, mate had a mk2 golf kr with a g60 charger on it. That boot was I think at the time the biggest boot on a production saloon car. They were incredibly popular in the US.

Yeah the 1.3 really wasn't enough to be in a jetta.
And nice to read some other stories about jetta. I used to own a bora before my mk3 so always had a soft spot for a booted golf. Will update with more of the build soon

I like a Jetta - so much more exclusive than a Golf too. I learnt to drive in a Mk2 Golf with a 1.3 engine and 4-speed box. That was pretty slow, so I can only imagine the Jetta being slightly worse. I too had a Bora, and I am pretty certain you could get 3 bodies in the boot!!
