So I’m looking at buying a car that the current owner bought for spares and has no v5 for in his name. Looking at it it hasn’t moved in more than 10 years or more but is there a process to get it registered in my name? Can I use a v62? Have any of you gone through this process or should I stay clear?
Thanks

Just fill in a lost log book form and send £25.
HPI check first to make sure it isn't an outstanding stolen maybe?

Also make sure it hasn't been marked as scrap, I bought a Clio for spares once, and the guy i bought it off sent it off as scrap, which was really annoying as it turned out to be better than what i had.

personally, given the issues purplevanman had with one of his cars I wouldn't bother. It may not come up as an HPI but the car may have been sold to spite someone else (i.e a bloke selling his wife's car, or a mate screwing over someone else due to a payday loan; the latter happened to a friend of mine on a £5k car ; it was as messy as you think). In that case you won't have a leg to stand on. The only time I would buy a car without a V5 is if you knew the person you were buying it off very very well. If he's genuinely lost it, why doesn't he get another logbook and why didn't he do it then? It's £25 for peace of mine after all. Even when I've bought cars for spares and sold them for spares, I've always processed the logbook, and chased the DVLA at times for it. If you are planning on using the cars for spares yourself, then there is less risk attached.

There could be a genuine reason ( I can't find the v5 for my daily since I moved house, and I'm working away from home so can't search for it or apply for a replacement) Years ago I often bought cars & bikes with no documentation, now I'm a lot more choosy

I'm going to assume you want this car, and cannot find an equivalent easily elsewhere. If you can, do, as it's an easier path. That said... HPI check it, make sure you have the reg number and the VIN/chassis number. Check those match and it's finance clear and not stolen or scrapped. Also check the government website that it's not been on the road for a while - if it says it's still running around then it's ringed. Assuming it's all OK, take your chances and V62 it. Don't pay more than you're willing to lose, but at least you've covered all the major bases. I've done it on a couple of projects, and so far it's worked out OK for me, YMMV. If it hasn't got a reg number (either on a number plate or old tax disc or documentation) then your going to have a much harder time. Sometimes you can trace the reg from the VIN/chassis through some slightly iffy means, but not always. I'm currently going through that pain on a *very* cheap motorbike I picked up, but went in to the deal accepting that I was risking the money and it may end up as an off-road only toy. In fact, a good rule with any car even new ones is don't pay more than you're willing to lose

Removed, originally requested by TessierAshpool, but some sleeping dogs should be left to lie.

HPI really doesn't mean anything and as it turns out nor does a certificate of destruction.
One of my Monzas had no V5, applied for one and turns out it had a COD issued, supplied evidence of its existence and an MOT and got a V5. The car had been HPId several times to make sure there were not going to be any surprises.

Agreed - getting a vehicle "un-scrapped" is very possible, with suitable evidence (and maybe a visit from their inspectors).
If it's been nicked or it's a ringer, that's a completely different can of worms best left closed IMHO.

Thanks for the info/ help. At the moment the reg the owner has supplied me doesn’t match the part of a reg you can see in the photos so I’ve questioned that. Also that reg matches as a series 3 but it looks like a 2 to me! It’s a Land Rover that’s been in a field for a long time so I’m not expecting there to be much left of the vin number on the dumb iron so if he carnt confirm without any doubt what the correct reg is then I will just pass on it I think.

A Triggers Broom Landy? Nothing new there..
Ones that claim to be Series but with coil springs (and a full Defender panel set) are the ones that make me giggle.
Approach it like you’re an inspector with in depth marque knowledge; if you have your doubts, so will they.

At the moment I have more doubts about the seller than the Landy. It would take a mountain of work to restore but the issue is around papers and lack of photos of the ID, having to ask the same things multiple times to get results. It is cheep but not after it’s been pulled from its resting place and transported 100 miles.

...the reg the owner has supplied me doesn’t match the part of a reg you can see in the photos ... Walk away. Landy owners seem to forever be swapping stuff from different series so not as worried about that, but I wouldn't touch anything with the wrong plates on with a barge pole.

I suspect, albeit could be wrong, that he does know so is playing dumb.
If someone wants rid, and to not lose out alot, they'll try anything to get rid.

I've walked away from deals where the V5 isn't present. I got to one sellers house, with mates and their pickup and trailer, having been the successful bidder on ebay, and was just given a handwritten receipt, sold as seen. When it turned out that the seller didn't have the V5 we unloaded the car again and pushed it back on his drive - it just didn't feel right. Told him that if he could order a replacement V5 that we'd be back and I'd even pay the £20 extra for it - funnily enough he never called me back...
Sometimes you just have to listen to those subconscious alarm bells.
