Question for any of you cladding experts out there, when joining two boards end on end, do I do a straight forward butt joint edge on edge. Or do I do a 45 degree bevel on the ends of the boards to make a tighter fix. I'm thinking the bevel, but not an expert on it. What say the board?

From some googling it seems a bevel is indeed the way to go, or leave a 5mm gap between boards

I'd agree a bevel with the upper board overlapping the lower will keep water out of the end grain, that said many I have seen , seem to butt joint them and rely on a bead of sealer.

Personally I wouldn't, as the wood moves and the silicone will tear and then trap water, without it the timber will be able to breathe

I can't comment as all the buildings, etc... that I have experience of, always had complete lengths of board, as opposed to boards that were joined. Sorry can't help.

A complete length of board is always best, I agree. But as I am 6m to the peak there is no alternative but to join a few.

A complete length of board is always best, I agree. But as I am 6m to the peak there is no alternative but to join a few. You can get boards of 6metres + 4.8m is the longest I can get anywhere remotely local to me. A joint will be fine and any joins will be at the overcladding of the block wall sections, so any water ingress or draft will be onto a 6" block wall.

Thais the first row of rear cladding around 98% of the way there now. Some fettling required in the corners but need more heavy section tek screws to complete. Wind is real strong now (60+mph and drifting snow) so I have called it for the day. Hopefully will be better conditions in the morning. Pics are not the best with the trees blocking the way but you will get the idea. Just say if these cladding shots are getting tiresome and I will refrain.

Managed to get out on the ladder for a bit last night. Began the overclad on the frontage, looking quite good. I had done a bit on the back wall but then decided Id be best to finish off the part that is on show first. Obligatory pic

Was a tossup between cladding and Europa league last night, managed a score draw with the football in the headphones the cladding continued. Even I am getting bored of this now!!

a little more cladding on. Can get a proper feel for how it will look now. A little jiggery pokery required on the 3rd board in from the left, never noticed at the time. The exposed block will be partially hidden by the ramp when it goes in and will see what I need to do to tidy off when done. Running very low on cladding boards now and larch is on a shortage in the highlands due to the weather at the moment, so things may grind to a halt on the cladding front. Plenty things to be going on with though, could be the floor or the roof weather dependent.

Looks great.
Get the roof on, at least it becomes moderately weatherproof then.

yeah i think the roof is a bit of a priority now, just need the wind to drop off for a weekend really. But with a lid on it, I can then at least work inside on the floor etc when the weather is poor.
My Mrs had a grumble about the claddign, said she would rather it matched the house harling, but I think it contrasts well and with a galv tin roof it will never match properly anyway.

Tell her she’s welcome to do the harling if she feels that strongly about it. You’ll do the washing up while she’s finishing off.

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

I think when its complete the cladding will look perfect. It will be in contrast with the house and there are plenty timber garages around the country
