After years of renting units it was finally time. Time to be a grown up and instead of paying someone to use there space buy my own. So what to do to keep the misses tickity boo. “Why don’t we buy a house with a garage” she came out with. A plan that had slowly been hatched without her realising, making it her idea In the end. Perfect. So the hunt was on. Needed to have this and that for the house but most importantly needed a drive way and a garage. Many house viewings went by where my misses looked over the house and I disappeared outside to survey the garage. What ensued was months of right house wrong garage or vice versa. Until stumbling across this beauty. Granted it’s not the biggest garage but at 20’by 9’ it’s doable. Long drive and a neighbour who is in to motorcycles check. Garage will need some work to make use of the space and there’s jobs to do on the house. Bit of juggling and should before long have a happy misses with her dream house and a happy me where I can go and tinker with my long suffering project car.

Garage was typically just a dumping ground at first of boxes and furniture but slowly it’s getting sorted and the space is becoming better. The roof was a wasted space so a van load of 8’x2’ boards were acquired off a mate and put up on top of the trusses to create a loft for storage with 2 generous loft hatches. Also ran a few lights up there on a separate switch to make it easier to see. Next I picked up some slightly damaged kitchen wall units to fit to the back wall to create storage for consumables. Moved my rollcab in and knocked up a bench out of 3x2 and ply to fit vice, grinder and piller drill to. Added a few lights under the wall units to light the bench. This is were I’m up to at the moment. Definitely a work in progress. Need to build a shed to house all the garden utensils next to free up some more space.

Nice smart looking garage. Long term could you extend the garage backwards to increase its length?

Nice smart looking garage. Long term could you extend the garage backwards to increase its length? Yes long term probably extend it another 10ft back. I could also be better being wider too but that’s a whole lot of work that is gonna have to wait. I’m hoping by just being organised and keeping everything off the floor space should be manageable.

Nice job, how about a leanto type shed on the side for parts stores, easier than a side extension and frees up more space inside?

Nice job, how about a leanto type shed on the side for parts stores, easier than a side extension and frees up more space inside? That has been mentioned before. There’s a 2ft gap between our garage and next doors so I’d only have to fit a door at each end and a roof. Maybe idea or items that aren’t needed to much. Might even tag a 8x4 shed on the rear with a sloping roof for the gardening utensils which could also house the compressor and then frees up room in the garage. Definitely all good ideas tho I need to weigh up.

Next job I need to sort out is insulation. The roof is insulated but I’m thinking of fitting rock wool between the joists and then line with 3mm ply. Painted white should reflect some light down then. Biggest puzzle is what to do with the up and over door. Mainly sound insulation. Don’t want to be upsetting the neighbours when having a late night grindathon.

Very nice! I looked at a place last year with a similar layout (garage behind the house, driveway long enough for all my cars + a couple of spares) Not jealous at all For the walkway between the 2 garages, I had something similar and put decking down as flooring (+ ends & roof), ideal as overspill storage for cycles, gardening stuff, and essentials like winter wheels & tyres

Not much garage progress recently due to unforeseen DIY dutys. They say that the simplest jobs can become the hardest. We ain’t that the truth. Started by removing wall paper. Currently spending a day off work removing the old lath and plaster ceiling. Oh the joys. Hopefully plasterer is booked for April so soon as it’s plastered the garage will be getting some attention and tidying. Last weekend was spent checking over the long neglected project car and retrieving parts from my dads storage shed. Surprisingly after 10years outside under a tarp it’s exactly how it was left. Definitely getting giddy to get her home and to start work.

An excellent choice of beverage.
I keep looking at all these threads for inspiration as to what to do with my garage. The problem I have is I have about 4 adult bikes\ and they take up a lot of room, hydraulic brakes mean I can't hang them upside down.

Or have you enough height to hang them from the handlebars and seat?

A bit more progress today. Back filled with hardcore (courtesy of my recent front room escapades) and flags laid on a bed of mortar.

Jobs a peach. All pointed up. Just needs a quick brush off later. Ready for the construction of a shed. Got loads of 3x2 already but need to source some ply for the floor and roof and some feather edge board for the sides.

I don't know whether you are aware, but the chance of any regrowth on those leylandii trees is extremely remote. This means that you will have bare tree trunks to look at instead of foliage on your side.

This means that you will have bare tree trunks to look at instead of foliage on your side. To be honest I wasn’t sure what would happen to them. When we moved in the garden hadn’t been touched for over 10 years so was majorly overgrown and had all gone brown and died off. The neighbours have kept there side immaculate and didn’t seem to happy at the thought of removing them completely. I’ve just cot the top 15ft off level to where they have kept there side trimmed. It’s not ideal I know but is a kind of peace offering to the neighbour for the future.
