I mentioned to my wife on new years day that my intention for 2020 was to pay off my loan, finish rebuilding my Montego & not buy any more cars...
I lasted 1 day! That must be some kind of record!
I mentioned, via a FB post, that I might fancy rebuilding an older polo again (a mk3 coupe or breadvan)..... a good friend of mine got in touch to tell me that he was thinking about selling his.... A price was discussed & a deal finalised on Sunday 12th Jan.
So I'm now the owner of a 1991 VW Polo G40 coupe - its been sitting in a garage for almost 6 years, the keys have been stolen previously when the garage was broken into, the brakes are seized and the thermostat is stuck shut..... But other than that its going to be my new on going project....

I bought my first G40 back in 2002 & sold it in 2006 - I've always regretted it & said i'd have another one at some point
The plan with this one is a little different though.....

I loved my G40 and wish I’d never sold it. It was a fragile little thing though. Something seemed to break every time I drove it haha! This was it at one of the Polo Shows. Probably 2004-2005ish.  |

If I remember correctly your G40 was white with a towbar? I vaguely recall you towing a Polo trailer to one of the Polo Shows with a TV in the back?

At least you had good intentions, sometimes things pop up that you just cant say no to. A G40 sounds like a good reason to break the no-car resolution to me

I had a ‘91 J-reg G40 about 13 years ago, was great fun.
I paid for the supercharger to be professionally re-built and swapped the awful chavvy exhaust it came with back to a genuine brand new VW one immediately after buying it!
Seemed quick at the time, but not sure it really was all that, 113bhp I think, but didn’t weigh much!

Mine did have a towbar & did tow the trailer occasionally - but it belonged to Ross Keir - 13kpologt on the Polo forum. Its quite famous and has had several owners since then. |

I keep saying that I’m not going to buy anymore cars 😂 add a Fiat Coupe 20vt and a free 69 vw beetle last year
This year I’m going to get my Alfa 155 2.5 v6 done as it’s been off the road since 2013 and gets left every time I by another car. The Alfa 33 1.7ie is nearly finished and should be motd early February

Started working on the car last night after work.
2 hrs of going over things and checking what needs to be looked over.
Battery removed & put on to trickle charge
Thermostat - found one in the garage still new in the box - score
Fitted new door handles and boot lock - so everything back on 1 key now!
Clifford alarm fob ordered
Found a box of bits for the last G40 that I though i'd got rid of 10+ years ago!
Back up there tonight to try and unseize the boot lock fully - get the interior cleared out and Then its first wash!
