And finally for todays update please go check out our latest video on YouTube. This is quite possibly our most silly video yet as we disucss greasing nipples, there are induendo's and immature giggles galore!
I also wanted to thank everyone who's subscribed to our channel from RR, we're only small but we really apprecaite it and are loving the support!Tthe analytics of YouTube tell us that many of our views come from the Retro Rides family and it means so much to us! We're far from professional but we hope our videos are enjoyable and (relatively) informative! Thank you so much!

"Hi metalshapes thanks for the information and suggestions. I'll be honest and tell you I am not sure what was fitted to the later Cortez's. I believe the current 4speed manual has a differential in it though not an LSD" Yeah, your transaxle will have a diff, but more than likely not a LSD. I did a Google for it, and I believe this is a pic of your setup ( except somebody did a V8 swap on it, right? ) From what I've read , the Th425 was used in the later ones. Its only a 3 speed auto, but it is pretty clever in that it is based on the regular Th400 ( GM made millions of those ), and they share a lot of the same parts ( but more heavy duty guts in the TH425 ) So most parts will not be a problem ( any tranny shop, anywhere in the States should be able to get you going if you'd get stranded with it) It sits next to the engine and is connected to the torque converter with a stout internal chain, which reverses the rotation , but the engine still runs clockwise ( the reverse rotation is corrected with the diff, which is why that used to be a headache to get better performance ratios for ) Another thought would be the complete driveline out of a big front wheel drive Audi ( if they still make some that are not 4WD ) Because its pretty similar in configuration, and should fit the hole. Although, since they are built for high speed Autobahn driving, the gearing may be all wrong for the Cortez...

Thank you so much metalshapes! That's so helpful and has given me something to go research further. The Cortez does have a v8 fitted. Have a ready been thinking about VAG setup but there's so much to consider!

Yeah..... I looked at that Pic and immediately thought of Audi. The bigger V8s are all 4wd though and not all the gearboxes are noted for their reliability.
However the 6 speed manuals (2and 4 WD available) are tough and it possible to get them fitted to most engine variants. Whether they are tough enough for what is really a junior HGV might be open to debate though.

Nick Having done some more research on the current gearbox I am feeling a little more positive about keeping it. However, that doesn't mean that if it eventually goes boom I would change it to something more readily available / stronger / more economic. I agree with you Nick, the FWD V6 box would more than likely fit very easily but I too doubt how it would cope with the abuse of hauling 9ton around! Andy

jpsmit a modern Merc diesel engine would be ideal. Something else to look in to! Also, L loved your comment about the unicorn status! Because of that she will remove her engagement ring from now on! (Thanks mate, appreciate it!) Thanks guys! I honestly think the biggest issue would be drive shafts but I'm sure there's a solution out there! Andy thanks for the update and I am relieved! Before you go to crazy with running gear, is it worth an entire frame swap? May mean RWD but all of a sudden you have a diesel, a modern suspension and even such refinements as antilock brakes - potentially for a fraction of individual parts.

It's a great idea and one that I feel could easily (relatively) be achieved. However, at the moment we don't have the money to do anything like it. It is something L talks about all the time, she refers to it as "our dream Cortez chassis" Here's our lastest photo of the Cortez and us, gives a good idea of scale. Andy

Are you sure that weighs 9t? Or is that the absolute maximum?

I have often looked on there for 'projects', I just have nowhere to store or work on them (we're on borrowed time with the Cortez location)

Good evening all! Can anyone give me any tips for removing this undersealy-type stuff? It's hard and not sticky and kinda like bedliner. A new panels on the inside of the Cortez need some surface rust treatment and this stuff is coming off in patches. I wanna get the panels clear of this underseal, remove/treat the rust, protect the panel, add sound proofing. Thanks! Andy

That does look like plasticised underseal, and if it is, heat and a scraper will be about the only thing to take it off.
I would say that gearbox is stout enough to handle that vehicle, so long as you don't decide to go hopping up the performance of the engine.

Think I've got a heat gun stashed away somewhere! I'm feeling more comfortable about the gearbox too! Plenty of help from here and the Cortez owners group has set me at ease!

New video is out on the Tube, this time Anti-roll bar bushes! Only managed to take a couple of (slightly blurry) images during this. The original bushes were collapsing and cracking so we've swapped them out for Polyurethane items from Energy Suspension. Pretty easy to swap out with no issues. What has surprised me the most about the Cortez is the ease in which we can get it apart. I think so far we've only had one bolt shear and I've found a bolt that previously sheared but the last owner just ignored - which was slightly annoying as it was one of the mounting bolts for the alternator! But even that came out (in two pieces!) relatively easily! Doing this, along with re-greasing the other bushes has helped massively with the squeaking! We know we need to change the upper ball-joint on the passenger side ($180!!!) but we've got that and will be doing it soon! Thanks!
