I'm not sure if anyone has a 1979 Car and is in the same position but, my car was registered on the 26th Nov 1979 and so i guess its MOT exempt ( the DVLA site just says cars over 40 years) but i know its not tax free yet as the date has not changed .
Just wanted to ask before i go poking the wasps nest that is the DVLA

Tax becomes zero rated in the year after, so in this case 2020. Usually around April time, if it's mentioned in the budget which this year is in March to take effect in the April.

Slightly off topic but also not - how do you go about registering something for MOT exemption? I'm guessing it isn't as simple as waiting for it to be 40 years old and then not MOTing it anymore...

My car is 1977. But I’ve not used it since it turned 40,
Do I have to apply for MOT exemption and free tax? Or just go to tax it as usual and it will be free?

There’s a lot of cars that will become MOT exempt before becoming historic class but the VHI declaration is on the tax renewal system! Personally, I just drove my car without MOT and ticked the box at the next tax renewal time. If you get pulled they can’t charge you with not having an MOT on a car that’s exempt (unlike tax which you must have even if the cost is nil).

I guessed it was something like this but with no proper explanation from the DVLA i wasnt sure what to do. As its ran out of MOT and you cant get Tax without an MOT its a bit confusing ... or maybe you can now! I havent tried to retax it yet.

I had the same situation with my motorbike last year.
I insured it, went to the post office, explained and taxed it there and then without MOT. I used it a few times during summer then declared SORN. I had no problems. It was that simple.
