I remember being at a mini event at Gaydon not longer after the BMW Mini was launched and there must have been some trouble because a message came over a tannoy that if anyone had strong feelings against the new Mini they should leave.
Strange to think that was getting towards 20 years ago and those cars are now classics.
I always think the very early cars are interesting as you can see what bits were changed on later cars and with classics it generally seems that the things that were improved when they were new are now the things that people want, look at classic Mini's with Sliding windows which at the time were changed to wind up around 1969-70 for all but the vans and pickups, now the early cars are much more desirable.
Of course its not always plain sailing and I had an early modern S-Type Jag (1999) which was five years old at the time and everything that could go wrong with it did, it cost me a blooming fortune, I changed to a later 2002 model and it was totally reliable, like chalk and cheese. Whatever they changed in those short years it clearly worked!
