For a one off job though, there's a lot to be said for just hiring a decent machine in to get it done, a disc cutter and big breaker would be under £50 for the day i'd have thought. No, that's against heavyspanners rules - It *MUST* be as cheap as possible, and be some random chinese make like 'Huakwanawakhoe' or similar - So far all his dirt cheap tools have done a fantastic job - this trend must continue. The fence part had me in tears of laughter - and now I check every damn fence I see subconciously, same as when someone points out a face in some random object - I can never unsee it now. culpable fence-negligence. My new favorite thing!

That cut down door is shocking, the piece riveted on should be inside the door with the bottom of the leaves left longer, folded round and welded to it. Not the quickest job to do but looks a lot better.
I would be tempted to at least try refitting the infill panel inside the door as it does look like a water trap.
As well as insulation in it there should be at least a couple of strengthening ribs running the length of the door, the bottom of these will need cutting back so the panel can fit in.
And the threshold is normally welded or bolted on, not supplied separate.

I had first iteration of an R11 - still probably my favourite car, although time probably installs rose-tinted glasses. A turbo, especially after Mr Ragnotti's exploits in rallies, was an as yet unrequited desire.

Hello all. First post here on Retro-Rides. Mostly over on the Volvo Owners Cub Forum but registered here awhile back on recommendation from another member.
Since receiving a generic email from RR a week or so ago I've been reading through this thread with interest. I have to say, Heavyspanners, I admire your approach and skill set...that includes the comedic value. If the first 16 pages are anything to go by we're in for a real treat.
Agree with the others with regards to a cheapy 9" grinder and similar cheapish diamond discs. You'll surely use the 9" again throughout the build and save the 4 1/2" for lighter/overhead work when needed. If you plan on cutting another doorway something like a Cut-n-Break type saw would make light work of both jobs. They're crazy money so maybe a local hire shop as recommended. Would you believe it, driving along today, caught myself fence spotting and... (in my best Victor Meldrew impression) ...spars on the bl**dy inside!

If you do get a 9" angry grinder, please be careful. They are dangerous, my roofer was in the Makita safety manual as an example as to why you don't take the gaurd off (cut from his wrist to shoulder, skipping major arterys! Sliced his bicep down the middle!). Mate had same thing but a bit less severe.

And hold on like grim death ! As with most nasty machines being confident and holding onto the bloody thing are key to a successful outcome ! How’s the Landy ? Working brakes etc now? James

I might be guilty of using a 4"one without the guard from time to time but my 9" one is pretty scary, if your not holding on tight just turning it on will rip it out of your hand, definitely need to hold on tight and always use the guard. That said it's been incredibly usefull over the years.

I would not go anywhere near cutting dry with a 9" grinder - the dust is unbelievable.
I rented one of these And extended the windows so the house looked less like a prison! It was quick, easy and with a water supply hooked up clean - even cutting from the inside. Fab thread!

Why you wear safety glasses even for the smallest of jobs

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Why you wear safety glasses even for the smallest of jobs I have a fairly relaxed attitude to my personal safety some of the time but am always very careful about my eyes. Not happy currently - am working away from home and brought a decent pair of tinted safety glasses to double up as safety gear and also beach/watersports shades. Peeled an orange from the garden last week and its sprayed a few drops onto the lens - I now have tinted lenses with a retro tye-dye pattern

I'm pretty deaf and my eyesight isn't great so now always wear safety glasses and ear defenders even if only drilling or grinding for 30 seconds.
Being young you think loud tools/music/cars can't harm you, but it all takes its toll. Anyone for tinnitus?

I was a little flippant with eye wear doing small quick jobs until my son came home from work with the glasses in the picture above.... and a cut to his eye brow. Seconds before he’d been grinding and flipped those glasses down off his head for the disc to then shatter milliseconds later Now I always reach for either the goggles or glasses even on the small tasks

The other thing to check is the discs themselves. They should be stored in a stable temperature and according to industry training the discs should be removed from the machine and hung or case stored, they never are! There will be a date stamped on the shiny bit the machine spindle goes through and only use the correct type of disc for the job. old or abused discs can shatter when the bonding resin gets over age or the disc is used improperly such as twisting a cutting disc etc.
Great work, i'm watching with interest
