Just a thought. Anyone ever stretched crossplies? The standard lowrider set up was 5.20s on 7x13 wires. Looking through old Hot Car mags from the late sixties also reveals some early stretching going on - banded wheels were available before big tyres were!

I find when using the KP in wet (165/65 on a 7") the tyres are more predictable and they certainly feel better in the dry than unstretched high side wall tyres, though it's not what you would call a large stretch. When I was running 215/40's on a 9" on my E36 the tyres felt amazing in both wet and dry, really easy to push on and gripped really well. Just my experiences, the best way is to try it and see. Handling is overrated, stretch rules! Hot strech/ wheel fitment 185's on an 11" Fo realz ;D

Yes, I realised the lowrider connection shortly after posting. I reckon Streetrules should fit some stretched xplies to the Humber

I'd be far less concerned with grip than something hitting the unprotected rim and losing all the air out of the tyre all in one go, or the stresses in the metal in the tyre being sent in all the wrong directions, its just looks wrong and sooo unsafe and i have driven some real heaps about.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I'm rolling on widened steel 13x8's with 175/50/13 stretched on because I need the guard clearance and I like the look. I'm running yokohama a539's and they are out standing in the wet. We recently had a trackday and I was keeping up with an Integra type R on good tread and I was embarrasing a couple of vtec civics and 205gti pugs ;D I support stretching tyres within reason and would recommend it to others. edit: Oh and just a little bit of info. If stretching tyres you want to get a good quality tyre with a lip protector. I don't like the look of the rim of the wheel sticking out heaps but it seems some of you do. Also, it makes it easier if the tyre has been on another rim already as stretching the sidewall is sometimes difficult, especially if its a particularly strong one like crossply or race radials. I also have some avon formula ford slicks that are 6 inches wide that I'm thinking about putting on some 7 inch rims but I'm unsure of how that will work. I'll post here if I end up doing it.

Stretch is very cool but only if its not ridiculous. I think the 185's on an 11" looks a bit pap but the Stretch on the back of Chandlers Saxo looks great. I'm gunna try and run a smidge of stretch on my planned new wheels but they're not that wide so The tyre's are prolly gunna have to be 175 or 165

Stretched xplys would be good but I spanked a load of cash on the XAS jobbies. Bums.
Thanks for the info, guys. I'm looking forward to experimenting...

I've got 175/50/13s on my 8" allycats but then I'm one of those idiots who lowers mk2 golfs and makes em handle like curse word. The stretch I've got is as far as I'd go, I think the ones that are too extreme like that saxo are a bit dangerous. Imagine if you're in a crash, and the rim digs into the road... I've also heard a few horror stories from people who stretch stuff like Nankangs and the sidewall starts to come apart

205/50R15 on a 10x15 rim, daily driver. I'm only on 195/50R15 on a 8X15 on the front at the moment until 185/55 are back in stock. imho, grippier in the wet and dry than a 205/50R16 on a 6.5x16 rim. definately more stable/predictable.
