Been leafing through some old mags, and as ever find my self wishing I could go back in time... So I scanned a few bits and bobs and sod the copyright heres a taster.... Who remembers E-Gyptian? A customised E Type V12? Well, let that jog the memory. They don't build them like that any more. I'd so love to turn up to a JDC meeting in that. Seems E Type Jags were the in thing. of course, back in the 70s you had quite a choice of used cars.... And a choice of goodies to hop it up.... larger version, almost legible: img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/oldmags/wheels.jpgand of course your pumpin' ICE install goodies Nostalgia, ah, forget your matt black roadsters and red spoked wheels, this is what I remember....

Look at the price, a car radio is twice the cost of a modified head! and nearly 5 times as much as an alloy wheel, thast just mental!

E Type Jag cusom. Wicked! My dad and I went for a test drive in one locally when i was very young, not sure if he really wanted to buy it but he asked what I thought. i replied, "Huh its nowt special.." ;D and then we went home!!! ;D I don't really think I influenced the decision I hope not, I don't know why i said it! ;D Funny though, using one of his ironic comments in a real situation! Wish he'd buy one now!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I regularly buy old magazines by the box from a specialist automotive bookshop near me. With the Australian racing and American stuff I buy though, you see things like a set of heads for a Ford V8 for next to nothing compared to the price for a set of alloy wheels. funny how prices for some things have become less expensive over the years in indexation to how much people earn, while other things have remained fairly expensive.

I remember those adverts as well, so another one of us feeling old now. My mate who was older than me in those days actually "sent away" for a Nikki carb kit from Mitcham Motors! It was for his Beetle, and I even remember the Saturday afternoon that we fitted it. Always wanted a set of those Appliance chrome smoothies as well. Ahh memories.. ;D

The ads are cool. AK find one showing that ally cat is the correct spelling and not alley cat, or allycat, or alleycat lol.

Back in the 70s, E-Types weren't very popular so were a cheap base for parts, still an unusual choice for customs though! Seeing that ad with the E-Type and the stripes, does anyone remember the black E-Type in Brannigan? A John Wayne film where he jumps Tower Bridge in the yellow Capri If a few stripes are good, loads of stripes must be better ;D

Oh my my gawd. I remember all those too. Were they in Exchange & Mart? I remember buying a 'remote' gear change for my 105e Anglia. to replace the long spindly original. Lovely bit of kit, brand new, cost a fiver.

The price difference between heads and wheels is to do with labour rates, a modified head is done by hand and cos wages were proportionally lower for that sort of thing back then the heads are cheap compared to wheels, these days more stuff is mechanised and there are less people in the sort of jobs where you would learn the relevant skills, less people learn how to port heads and it becomes a specialist field and supply and demand drives up the price. Car radios would have been mainly hand assembled and although wages were lower it would have taken longer to put the together using parts that cost more in the first place.
well thats my take on it anyway, i remeber nearly all those adverts, course i am old enough to have bought the first issues of Street Machine AND Custom Car when they first appeared.

God, that's awakened some memories. I can still remember racing home from school on the second/third friday of each month to read CC that my mum bought for me. Can't believe it's 30-odd years ago. Go here www.timetraveldvds.co.uk/page4.html for hundreds of pics taken during the halcyon days of the British 'Custom' scene.

Inflation at that time was running at over 25%. In January 1977 my dad bought a second-hand Cortina 2000GXL which had cost £1200 new four years before. He paid £1400 for it. Yet people were still earning £40-45 a week. People remember the 70's thru rose-tinted specs, and having lived through them, I have no idea why. ;D
