Glad you got this Jim. I saw it floating around on FB and thought it would be a shame to break it. Cracking motors. Thats what i though. Turns out they are rarer than i though so even more reason to take it on (even though i have too many projects!).

Had a very productive day. Simon, the previous owner has supplied me with all the parts needed to fix it! That includes a chopped section from the front of a donor car. I spent the day pulling out the remainder of the rearward crushing, and then picking the slam panel off the donor car and the bent one off my car and then checking the alignment. Had to unbolt the top and front of the front wings to get to some of the spot welds. Not difficult though. Then with the old slam panel off i could do the final shaping of the support mounts. Balanced the new slam panel on and put the wings back in place. Simon gave/lent me a standard mk2 bonnet (no 2.0 gsi bulge) so i trial fitted that to make sure the new slam panel worked with the bonnet latch. All works fine. So now i just need to prep the panel and weld it on. Also check out the history file. Proper old school wallet think with labelled front. Then inside pretty much every MOT, loads of handwritten invoices and service notes. Fantastic!

My parents had a blue 420GSi saloon. Why didn't the previous owner Simon not repair the car? The Estate does look very nice.

Attempting to work my way quite speedily through this car. Been sorting the water pipes at work while its too dark or too wet to weld the front on (or basically I'm too tired after work) Put them in the blast cabinet, but its not really up to the job so i used a strip and clean pad on a grinder. Much better. Then i found some splits that needed welding up. Think the tube is made of flat, that is bent into a curve and welded and it slit along the weld, so i cleaned it off and welded it back up. Then found some grot behind a bracket so opened it up and used a hacksaw to clean it up. Then left them to soak all weekedn in Bilt Hamber Deox C rust killer. Painted the lower hoses in bona primer and then black.. Top rail didi in etch and tehn black. Fitted the coolant temp sensor for fans to the rad. Video of above.

Made serious progress today. I spent ages prepping the slam panel. I de-rusted the underside, painted it in Hydrate 80, then bonda zinc primer, then etch primer. Left it on the radiator to dry. Then painted the underside in metallic green. Only doing the underside as all the top will be done properly by the bodyshop. The underside will be difficult to get to once it is welded in, hence me doing it now. I also did the rear side of the bonnent latch stiffener and the front bumper mounts. Then i welded the slam panel to the car. I have very little shielding gas left, so i had to avoid the blustery winds! Ground all the welds back and then gave it a dusting of etch primer to give it at least a little protection. Also painted the inner edge of the nearside front wing, as it had been rubbed down to bare metal but not actually painted.
