I've owned this Bond 875 for a few years, they are quite rare only 3400 made. The company like most British firms died after the main owner died. www.imps4ever.info/specials/bond.htmlThe car needs mechanical rebuild and some bodywork restoration, I am tempted to keep the patina just to upset the polishing wallys ! The was sold in Preston (where ALL the Bond 875's were made) by Cundells of Preston in april 1967. After a couple of years went to canny Scotland where it was driven into the ground by 1977 and stored ! In scotland the windscreen must have been broken, so it was botched by fitting what looks like a Reliant 3 wheeler screen with some body work as well ! When it sold through ebay in about 2010 it was just as it had been stored complete with engine. I bought it a few years later, the wrong screen had been removed, and the correct screen was added. The engine and gearbox had been separated, but still remained with the car.

Upon getting the car was stored, as most of these cars seem to do ! There are about 14 on the road (according to how many left) but there are 100's in barns and garages awaiting resurrection. Famously John Surtees drove the car at a race track and broke the track record for sub 1000cc cars. This backfired on Bond Cars, (perhaps Reliant spoke up to their contacts, or just GovernMENTAL morons didn't want 3 wheelers going quicker than their Rolls ?) The Bond 875 had to be 400kg or less to enable motorcyclists to drive on a motorcycle licence (with a blanked out reverse gear ! why ? GovernMENTAL fukkwittery which still surrounds 3 wheelers to this day ! (you need to be 21 plus to drive one ! why ?) A report on the Bond 875 shows development was delayed and rushed ! This all delayed production for over a year, leading to lost sales and financial crisis from the death of the founder and the development of the Bond Equipe 4 wheeler. Who knows BMW only sold dodgy 3 wheel trouble cars until they updated in the mid 1960's (we could all be driving around in Bond M3's if history was different ?)

The Bond 875 used the rather neat hillman imp 875 engine transaxle and rear suspension. As usual this created more problems when Rootes were bought out by Chrysler USA who found a massive hole in Rootes bank balance caused mainly by the Hillman Imp (caused by GovernMENTAL idiots insisting on production in Linwood Scotland, in a new factory using unskilled and strike prone workers ! When Chrysler bought Rootes they became less happy to sell parts to Bond ! IMP Quality was poor and bodies were made in Coventry and sent on open Trains , unpainted and then sat outside for months on end ! (unpainted). Engine castings went from linwood to be assembled in the midlands ! assembled parts then went on the train again all the way up to Scotland, adding cost and increasing timescales and reducing quality (pictures of 100's of sub standard engines and transaxles piled up at Linwood !) The complete engine and gearbox weighed 170lbs, was detuned to 34bhp (GovernMENTAL idiots are becoming a trend because they killed off so much British industry for political reasons). So what am I trying to achieve with this rebuild ? Get a reliable engine with about 50 rear wheel horse power from the 875 engine. Update many parts (electronic ignition and electric water pump , the IMP water pump and fan was originally driven by the engine, this costs in excess of 5 bhp at 5,000 rpm ! That is alot when originally the car only had 34 bhp but could still hit 80mph. (IMPs overheat, and though inefficient the fan and water pump used up 5bhp at 5,000 rpm ! The transaxle would also swallow 20% of the engine power (so less than 23 bhp at the wheels where it counts) and the Bond 875 could still hit 80mph due to the smooth high rpm engine. Upgrade the interior, the Bond EVERYTHING was extra light to pass the 400kg weight limit. I hope to keep it light but more modern. Many parts need rebuilding so I'll get the engine and gearbox rebuilt (they both are IMP weak spots). The engine known to overheat and the gearbox is weak and vulnerable to running with low oil. Both will be upgraded. I have already bought a LSD just BECAUSE lol. The wiring and carburation will be replaced. Fibreglass cars and poor design of having the prone to leaking carbs sitting over a red hot exhaust ! This happened to one Bond 875 that I know of .... Not much left for the poor owner having just started the car after winter storage.

The Bond 875 is a rare type of car - A glass fibre monocoque ! The body/chassis is glassfibre on the 875, just like the lastest supercars are carbon fibre monocoques. the front suspension bolts to the glassfibre shell. As does the rear which bolts to the glass fibre. One of the known weaknesses of the Bond 875 is deterioration of the fibreglass integrity just before the rear suspension mount on high mileage cars. The Lotus Elite of 1959-60 also had a fibreglass monococque. Modern carbon fibre cars have a monococque with bits bolted to it, just like the Bond 875 and the 1959 Elite. Meanwhile the Reliant stuck to rigid rear axles and rusty chassis and wobbly front suspension ! next :- Why do rebuilt and refurbished IMP engines cost so much ?

never expected there to be a fibreglass monococque, didn't think it'd be able to hold up to the task of that

What you want to do is stick a Rover V8 in there.

Possibly the best area for change is the aerodynamics of the Bond. The lift created by the design has to be experienced ! Hit a bump at 60 mph and it feels like its going to take off. Does anybody have any ideas ? (I'd prefer not to add weight)

You need to stop air going under the front and spill it to the side, some sort of air dam below the front bumper ( you can put it a bit further back to make it less conspicuous) and lowering the front would help. The dam needs to be fairly close to the ground, some sort of thick rubber is ideal.
Theres not a lot you can do about the low pressure at the front of the bonnet without changing the shape, lowering just the front will help a little though though.

A guy who my brother went to school with ran an orange one for a while back in the day. He spent loads on it, Hartwell tuning gear, Cosmic alloys on the rear...really looked well and went like a rocket. One day we were driving along the main road past our estate when we saw a pile of orange fibreglass and alloy wheels/mechanical bits on the grass verge. We realised it was the remains of Chris's Bond 875. After making enquiries we were relieved to find out he was still in one piece and spoke to him soon after when he came out of intensive care. Apparently he'd found out hitting a Zephyr head on with a Bond 875 isn't a good idea.

Hitting a big car with a small car head on is not a good idea. I doubt he would have survived in a 1960's mini or any other 1960's small car. One thing about composits is they do (in certain circumstances) have excellent energy absorbtion ! The front clam is just fibreglass, so you have 4 feet of crumple zone ! If it was front to side less so ! Glad you mate survived !

Can´t help thinking that adding an extra front wheel would be the biggest improvement you could make.

i know you are anti adding weight but a bit of ballast up front could make a big difference. the day swmbo purchased a 1200 estelle back in the day we dropped a handling kit (25kg bag o' sand) in the front end. instant go cart.

Delete all the front bodywork, add a couple of 2cv lights and you've saved weight and all that lift inducing front end.

Can´t help thinking that adding an extra front wheel would be the biggest improvement you could make. Its a historic vehicle (free road tax no mot) any material changes would probably negate all that (probably adding a 4th wheel would turn it into a kitcar). Interestingly Bond were trying out a 4 wheel Bond 875 (before Reliants take over). A different market but allegedly 'Crysler' lol didn't want a better competitor than the IMP ! 3 wheeler cars enable 16 year olds to drive (early post war) and motorcyclists to drive 3 wheels on a motorcycle licence (both of which concessions have been removed, you couldn't drive one in the gErman Union ! das ) A 450kg car with 60bhp would have revolutionised 1970's car production ! ( no chance the GovernMENTAL meddlers would allow it ) The Bond 875 3 wheel front wheel leans like a motorcycle, this gave more grip in turns ! (you could argue why bother with a 3rd wheel because a motorcycle is more efficient than a car)

Delete all the front bodywork, add a couple of 2cv lights and you've saved weight and all that lift inducing front end. Reliant did this in 1948 ! on sale from Andy Teirnan www.andybuysbikes.com/bikeshtml/7202rel.html £5.5K

What are the plans on the engine? I would think that even a standard 875 Sport engine would be more than enough entertainment if the indicated performance from the lowest possible output Imp motor is anything to go by. I was wondering about the need for an LSD - this answered that one.
