Having a right dilemma here. I managed to get this car for cheap from a work colleague. I'd already done a couple of small jobs on it for him. Short story, the low oil pressure light started to beep and it started tapping from the head like a goodun, so he stopped driving it. It stood for a few months before I had it off him.
I took a gamble as it was a cheap side project so I could either drive it and flog my E39 or sell it on for a profit. Winner winner chicken dinner thinks I. So over the space of the last 6 months I replaced the oil pump (old one was clogged and I also cleaned out the sump in the process) I then replaced the tappets, camchain, tensioner, cambelt, waterpump, thermostat and serviced it in the process. Two new budget tyres and I changed a wheel bearing for the MOT. It passed with advisories on rusty rear springs and low tread on the rear tyres. So it has a full MOT. I also fitted the larger VW Transporter oil filter to bump up the oil capacity as these 1.8Ts suffer from oil sludge problems. I also fitted a new battery. It's an APU engine. It also needs a new heater matrix (£34 from ECP) My plan was to do that after the MOT (horrible but done them before) All the heaters work etc but the front windscreen fogs a bit after a while.
At this point it sounds nice with plenty of power, no taps or knocks. However, the low pressure warning has started again once the oil gets ro 80 degrees and it is showing low pressure on a testing gauge. My feeling is crank bearings and I've hit my limit working on it. It could be a reltively easy fix for someone with the space and equipment to do it, loads of work has already been completed....Plus, the Wife is breathing down my neck lol
I mopped it and valeted the interior and as you can see in the pictures, it's absolutely spotless for it's age. The interior is immaculate and I doubt you'll find a cleaner B5 and the T-Sports are rare now too. I REALLY don't want to break it but if I have no luck selling it whole, I will have to and I'll get a lot more than £700 in parts. It's such a shame. I'm solid on £700 so I can buy another old 90s saloon which my Wife will hate.
