Well after dailying the classic range rover for a year I got to thinking that the grass is greener on the other side, sold the range rover and bought a modern focus diesel. £30 a year tax, 500 miles to the tank etc makes sense on paper but my god it was unreliable! It ended up with a knocking big end in a cloud of smoke on the driveway and completely put me off diesels and modern cars in general. So with that pile of rubbish scrapped I went looking for an older but hopefully reliable petrol estate. I looked at a couple of sierra estates and then stumbled on the audi. Within budget - check Estate - check Petrol - check Rust - no, none, nill. Don't get me wrong, it needs work but these are galvanised so there's no rust on the body. It's only got 76k on the clock and it's an auto too so those will be some fairly sedate miles. It's been tuned up to 230bhp thanks to a force 5 ecu, whatever that is, a stiffer waste gate spring and a different manifold. According to how many left this is the only 100 avant turbo non-quattro left on the road.

It managed the 200 mile journey home with no issues that I didn't know about when I bought it and only used quarter of a tank. The range rover would have easily gone through a whole tank on that trip. The main issues are that it over-cools and the speedometer doesn't work, although the mileometer counts over fine. Luckily it came with a spare cluster so should be able to fix it. Oh and the wheels aren't to my taste so will swap them ASAP But yeah it's very straight The cloth seats have been replaced with leather recaro from a saloon, which means the rear seat upright will need retrimming. I do have the leather for it though Other than that there's a few unnecessary switch that need removing inside, a seal the needs replacing on a rear window and a good service and cambelt change Will probably change the exhaust too. Looks like a diesel downpipe

Had a non turbo 2.3 version , manual 5 speed and loved it. Comfortable cars and great on fuel.

What a lovely example. I agree about the wheels and exhaust. Personally I would also lose the plates as I think they look too "scene", but who am I to judge? It's your car and it looks like a cracker.
My Mum's friend always had Audis - she had a 200E and one of the first new shape 100 Avants in the country in the 80s. Fabulous motors.

All-red strip across the rear suggests 200, but the 200s had wider headlights and indicators in the bumpers IIRC

Nick I believe the all red rear lights are from a German market 200. Could be wrong though. The 200 was just a higher trim level than the 100, both could come with the ur turbo engine and quattro drive train, although some nutcase specced this one with front wheel drive. You could even get late 200's with the 20v 5 cylinder turbo engines, which also came with round rear wheel arches. Agreed about the wheels, plates and exhaust. All will be going. I have the correct plates in the boot, so they can go on soon. The wheels however have new tyres so they can do me through winter. The original 6 spoke wheels are quite hard to come by so currently looking at porsche 928 wheels as a possibility. Looking more closely at the tailpipe, it actually looks like a chopped up downpipe as it has a flange. Weird but for now it's functional so not being replaced straight away, however I may cut and weld a new bit on so at least it's straight. First things first, cambelt needs doing once I find out whether it's a 120 tooth belt or 142... And I need to stop it overcooling. Lots and lots of niggly little jobs to be getting on with, and the lack of speedo is very annoying. Ironically it had a new one @ 24 miles in 1991!

Turbo without quattro...…. brave! Or daft...… Auto may help.
Friend of a friend had an Oettinger 2.5 Quattro Avant years ago. A proper rocket ship at the time. I really quite fancied it but he wouldn't sell. Then one day he rang up and asked if I still wanted it. I got quite excited, until he admitted he'd just melted the engine..... The special pistons needed to sort the engine were going to cost a lot more than it was worth (in fact one piston cost more than it was worth!)
New thermostat should sort the overcooling - all the slant 5s seem to like a new thermostat every 3 - 4 years. At least on the petrol ones any decent make should do the trick, whereas on the 2.5 diesels, if you don't get the proper Wahler one with the rubber seal it won't work!

Munn and Chapman -there's a name to take me back. Remember dad trading in the old w reg C2 100 (2144cc 5 cylinder but a 4 speed which drove dad mad after years of Maxi's) for a c reg B2 Passat 1.8Cl 4+e there just down the road from Granddad and Grandma's. Not 100% sure but believe the earlier 100's could be quattro but the turbo was reserved for the 200. Later versions got a bit more confused and the 200 name dropped ? Nice old bus - saw the advert and it looked good value for a nice classy old thing Anyway good luck with it, keep us updated. James

The 100/200 couldn't be had as a quattro and automatic at the same time. If you wanted both, the V8 was your only choice for the time being. At least it's a 4 speed auto. One year older and it'd been a 3 speed still...

Audi did a limited run 100CS that was a 'sporty' model although not turbo. They came with the same rear lamps/numberplate surround as this. Also had the very early Ur Quattro five spoke alloys, that would look cool on this but probably rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo
