I’ve owned some high performance cars over the years with some bold tuning, imprezas, R33 & R32, Porsche’s, M3s all of which have been driven hard. I can not stress enough how much fuel I used to pee into the wind with a lifted 4x4 on the road. It was insane. Never a truer word, my LWB Pajero on BFG’s is the only vehicle to have made my Impreza look economical.

An Impreza (non-turbo) might be in budget, and can be lifted with Forester running gear, then go as Mad Max as you like on the outside? Similar idea for Honda CRV? (not sure how easy a lift is, but has been done...)

I had a 2.5 L200 and a 2.8 challenger and they were both as bad as each other. I’ve heard the Delcias or whatever they’re called are even worse!

I have never had or wanted a 4x4 as they never appealed or more importantly, I never needed the functionality of one. So always steered clear of them. However........ You just screwed that up for me with these few pics. I may just go look at FB and Gumtree today. ...........😈

I've just bought a Mk1 CRV as my daily. Brilliant car so far! Lift kits are available, as are lowering springs if you want to go that way. 30-ish mpg on a run, but more realistically mid- to high-20s. I wouldn't want to test it with some serious off-roading, but a few muddy paths, snowy roads and grassy banks I'm sure it could cope with. I would get 25mpg out of my 2.8 litre carb-fed Nissan Patrol on a run, high-teens to low 20s on my commute to work. Maybe I just have a light right foot... It's getting a turbodiesel conversion now, although not for the economy but for the torque

I’ve considered the CRV numerous times. Lifts seem pretty easy and tyres are reasonable as you don’t need them so large.
What put me off of them is when you park them next to something like a hilux or challenger they’re incredibly small. Plus I liked the choice of 4WD, diff locks, high, low and everything else which you don’t get in a CRV. I do really like them though and have wanted to lift one for years.

I think that's the thing, compared to a proper separate chassis 4x4 they don't come close in terms of capability, but compared to a regular hatchback or estate car they are more versatile. They're essentially a lifted Honda Civic with AWD that will probably get you to work in the snow. I wouldn't want to do the Camel Trophy in one though.

another positive...i never picked up a car park dent in 7 years (yes , i would have known)*. try keeping a "straight" car dent free in your local supermarket.
*may have had something to do with 4" box sills.

B series frontera. burst proof japanese mechanicals, familiar 90s/00s GM engines, bland but comfortable GM interiors, ridiculously cheap, and spacious. selectable 4x4, low range box, generous towing specs, generous payload, rugged body on frame design. front lift comes with a simple adjustment with socket set on torsion bars, rear lift comes with set of cheap (because popular) isuzu springs.

I had a 04 plate crv 2.0i Auto, now it wasn't great on fuel (but at least double the mpg of my jeep) but with a set of normal khumo tyres (may have been all season) I managed to get up my dad's old drive. It was very steep, coming back down backwards was less fun 😂 In a team of 4 people, 3 of us had crvs after I got mine.
Autos are not geared well for 70mph, 65 or 75 is fine, 70 and it will kick down if you look at the accelerator.
Mk1's look great lifted or dropped

The slightly earlier A series, although a bit less fancy than the B's , had factory fitted steel bash plates fitted underneath whereas the b's had plastic ones.
