I'm assuming you treated the rusty rear flange with Hydrate 80 before the weld through primer? Mark - What I could access / get to yes but the problem with a rolling restoration like this one is that you simply cant access everything - you just have to do the best you can - treat what areas you can and be very through with the application of rust prevention products - from a restorers standpoint its very difficult to give guarantees on this type of work - that's why I would always advise that if you are going to this extent you may has well strip the shell and have it dipped - that way you know that everything on the shell & panels has had the rust removed from it

I thought I'd mention it as you glossed over it and other readers might assume the weld through primer would be enough. I get that you cannot reach all of the rust and can only treat what you can see/expose/push rust treatment into without getting into a 100% restoration.

More progress from this morning With the flange bolts removed - I could ease the wing out for access to the rear of the flange repair Then the weld the ends of the flange on the repair section Then dressed the welds back - I will prime all this edge up & apply a bead of sealer - then ensure it receives a decent coat of paint prior to it all being bolted back up Welds on the repair area dressed back Fluxed / tinned ready for the body solder Loaded Roughed back with the body file Then dressed back with the DA Next job is to remove the remaining paint - the previous paint job has not been keyed to the original factory finish very well at all so it tends to shell on the edges or around any rust / damage areas - its better removed than taking chances with it Good scrape back later Then the DA to reduce the factory primer to bare metal - I will have to finish this on Monday has I needed to go and collect the trailer and check the P38 over for a longish trip out tomorrow

Hello Chris, followed link here from Jowett talk. Great write up and pictures. There's blue paint to be seen everywhere on this Javelin. Could that be the original colour? If so, very unusual on a PD. Nick.

How long can you leave the panels bare for?
I’m assuming it’s ok for a couple of days in a dry workshop

Hi Nick - Thanks for the comments - The blue paint is something that got daubed on the car about 40 years ago by a previous owner - the original exterior colour on the car has always been black - there are a lot of Jowett restorations on here if you look up my threads (I don't put them on JT - its painful to load the images to and only read by very few - whereas on here its spread to a much wider & collectively much larger audience)

Back to it then NSF wing bare metaled Then treated with Hydrate 80 Defective paint scraped off the NSF door Then reduced to bare metal with the DA and prepped for profiling Then removed the door has the inner frame is somewhat scruffy And will require a good session to get it cleaned up for primer Meanwhile The wing profiling has commenced with its first skimming applied Should get a little more completed tomorrow in between many other tasks

Quick resto ?? And living life inbetween.... Rian - It is a fairly quick resto really - has you know there is only me and I reckon that it will be out of the door by the end of Jan - so 4 months in and other things / jobs have also been undertaken along the way - I track my hours so I will have a look at where it stands once I have completed it

It's obviously still in the garage cos I haven't done any more to it but there is no rust on that section at all yet...... Garage not heated but well insulated with some minimal ventilation (trickle vents on windows at one end and a not quite perfect fitting garage door at the other.)

Cleaned the inner frame of the NSF door up - just a pinhole in the bottom to weld up And the edge of the door skin was starting split on the very bottom edge Treated with Hydrate 80 Then turned it over to treat the outer Door rehung once cured And the initial profiling skim applied Worked the profiles on the NSF wing Which is now in final glaze (the green coating that you can see in the pic) Bonnet - last large external panel - does not look too bad on first appearances But poor prep when it was last painted lets it down - the trims were left on and just masked up by whoever previously painted the car hence now the paint is flaking away from the side of the trim Along with rust ingress creeping out from under the trim Hard to see but the poor prep has resulted in the paint blistering - its absolutely pointless painting over the top of this I need to remove the air box for the air cleaner to allow access to the trim clip fixings The edges also have rust ingress in them and will require some prep work And the underside of the bonnet skin could do with a clean up and a squirt of fresh paint Again difficult to see but maybe you can just see the blistering paint in the next few images Some time later Back to bare metal & treated with Hydrate 80 I still have the underside to prep yet Getting very close to primer though - the front panel is last panel to prep bar some minor fittings that need a little work - still need to complete the profiles on the NSF wing & door but it should see the car in primer at the end of this week

Rian - We decided upon a quiet relaxed evening at home with a nice meal - Sharon had gone to the trouble of the cooking and was smartly dressed when I came in from the workshop - I sort of felt obliged to make the effort so put a smart shirt on etc once I had my shower - has always she never insists on anything and puts up with a lot - hence I would rather make the effort and keep her happy

Never understood why people mask and paint around trim, you can always see it and it takes longer to mask it off then flat around it etc than to take it off anyway.
