Had to bite the bullet and call the scrappy to come pick up a Subaru Brat today. Been trying to offer it around for ages, but no one is interested. No longer have the space to store it so it’s got to go.
It’s just such a waste, I hate it! I had to scrap my Y reg Golf last year and a couple of years before that I had to scrap my wife’s ‘98 Corolla. Again no one was interested in either, so off they went.

I regret scrapping a few of mine as what I thought was unfixable back then, I now know is fixable so they died a needless death. However i prefer to scrap than sell, i always seem to cop the person that will message 6 months later asking why the eml is on, even more so when o sold my wifes 206 to my friends mum with 6 months MOT for 200 quid, failed the MOT on a drop link, and instantly on the phone complaining at me, it's a ten pound part...

My supertuned Allegro after an engine fire, my Grandad's old P6 after it dropped a valve and my Grandad's last car, a Carina (A60), with terminal corrosion. Each time it was like getting a dog put down!

After scrapping countless Maxis for parts, I thought Id be used to it. After all, as much as I love cars, I also see them as a lump of metal that is something not to get attached too. I had a Maxi on the road that got rear ended, I stripped it of anything valuable or useful, and gave it to a mate to race just because I couldnt bare the thought of just getting it crushed without it going out in a blaze of glory, But i wasnt attached to it. Even the car my dad built got sold because I wasnt attached to it. But there was one car that I really got attached too, and I didnt realize I was attached to it untill the scrap man picked it up. Originaly bought as a winter hack, it proved to be a really solid drive and a bulk of white paint saw it turned into a rally car. It never really got looked after, it got serviced but dad drove it like a tit, and so did I with his blessing. A total hoot. I really hated scrapping that one. It had a rotten bulkhead, but even then scrapping it just didnt feel right. It was more like putting a dog to sleep.

I have scrapped countless numbers of cars over the years and couldn't care less about any of them tbh, they are just metal etc, they do not have personalities, they have faults.
Regarding the scrap or sell decision, I make that based on which pays the most.

About 5 years ago my mk2 jetta gti stopped working. I left it on the road for 6 months till the dvla started giving me grief then i got it collected and crushed. Probably only needed a fuel pump relay.
Bit stupid really seeing how mk2 prices are going now.

Yep. Hate it. Had to scrap my first XJ40 that got hit by an oak and still didn't like it. My first X1/9 got hit by the same tree (it was a sodding great tree!) but at least that one went to an X1/9 breaker so bits of it went on to help others stay on the road.

Your not one of those people that cant sell their car for 500quid so sends it to the yard for 50 as 'no ones interested.? I'm sure you're not but generally I find thats why most stuff gets scrapped, people arnt realistic!
I'm just scrapping one if my 405 estates. Mint car when I got it but sadly has had some bodywork damage that wasnt my fault and engine troubles that I don't have the time to fix. Tried to move it on for less the scrap value but like yourself, no takers..

Scrapping cars is an alien concept to me as evidenced by the number of dead cars on my property.

I hate throwing away coffee jars or anything with a vague re-use let alone scrapping cars!

A mate of mine used to break Metro Gti’s back in the early 00’s, we stripped and scrapped loads of them. Pretty much worthless at the time but they’re getting rare and valuable now.
Also remember another mate scrapping a near mint xr2i with nearly a full mot just because he’d bought a new car and had no where to keep the fiesta untaxed. Again that would of been around 15 years back now.

Tried to move it on for less the scrap value but like yourself, no takers.. I’m not, I’m one of those people who would rather give a car away than see it scrapped. Kept offering my wife’s Corolla around until the MOT ran out. All it needed was a new CV joint, but we’d picked up a better car fairly cheap and didn’t need it any more. The Golf had been driven over some rocks at some point so both sills were dented and scraped quite badly. Again offered it around but no one was interested. Scrapped it the day the MOT ran out. I spoke to the scrappy and made it quite clear the Brat shouldn’t be crushed and they should try and salvage what they can from it. He’s aware of the potential value in it, which is good.

Had exactly this with a mk1 orion, cvh, sold to the parents of my sons friend, on the strict instruction that they would get the cambelt done, of course they didn’t, and guess whose fault it was when it went? After a few choice ‘instructions’ from me as to whose fault it actually was, they’re not friends any more!😁 Oh yeah, and that got scrapped too

scrapped loads over the years...but they were all parts car or has been bangered. as much as i am the antithesis of a crusty eco warrior i would/will never break , or weigh in , something that still had life in it. (actually thinking about it though , the only exception was the £250 mk1 gti that was probably was too good to break but back then it really was only worth £250!) i'm a firm believer that cars should be run till they are totally shagged not just a bit old before the bite the yard!
