Its that time of year where a good number of us attempt to seek out the last of the sun before the weather becomes a bleak dark winter - Has the thread suggests pics taken on your hols abroad but limited to retro motors only please We are currently enjoying the sunny Greek island of 'Rhodes' - a first day walking trip from our hotel for the week through the town of Rhodes itself turned up the following: VW Type 2 with side panel hacked out of it A very flat paint & lacquer peeling Toyota Camry Merc About 1 in every 10 motors is in this state - some abandoned / just parked up & covered in dust / flat tyres then left to rot - just anywhere too - parked kerbside etc This Defender had appeared to live more than the one life that certain owners of the marque are always banging on about There is a plethora of 90's & early 2000 motors all with more lacquer peel & well stuffed outer panels than what you would find in most UK scrapyards Another Merc Plenty of these VW badged Caddy's about - I don't think that the entire island has one with a single straight panel Street parking 'Rhodes' style One of several Panda's spotted Finally for today here is a fine example of someone's retro runabout - the front end was has bad has the rear - I don't think that vehicle safety is that strictly enforced on the island So what have you got / seen / snapped ?

Here are a few from my Trip to Berlin a year and a half ago. I travel a lot and get lots of photos of classics, so I'll no doubt post more later. A Barkas with a very dark past at the Ex-Stasi headquarters. One of the many Trabis I spotted. This one outside the famours Trabi World, near Checkpoint Charlie. The same colour combo as mine. An ex-Feuerwehr Transit van, used as a promotional vehicle. Spotted at the East Side Gallery near Warsauerstrasse.

slim pickings today ...this mk2 was absolutely stunning. the sun gets the better of most materials. I'm amazed these headlights pass the itv (mot) only 2 wheels but certainly retro style... and the best spot of the holiday i missed because i was slurping on a coctail.. a very nice classic 911 targa!

Back into Rhodes Town today Panda shaped but Seat flavour - I think that were called the Marbella in the UK but unsure what they are called here - regardless it had seen quite a bit of action Shame that this really nice Vespa was all dressed up and nowhere to go I'd guess that aren't too many of these Rover 400 series left in the UK let alone on a Greek island Plenty of battered Nissan D21 pickups still being put to use on the island Some odd shaped Fiat / Seat derived thing Odd & small - anything goes over here Smartish SWB Defender Wearing it's patina well was this Beatle - later in the day we passed a luckyseven 'Dolly' clone but were on the move so could not get a pic of it Late Escort Mk whatever & another Nissan D21 or were they still Datsuns then ? This what must be getting rare Primera appeared to be attracting others to its favourite parking / final resting place 3 series Beemer & 159 Alfa alongside the Primera A very faded red Renault 9 And a even more faded red & battered Skoda There is the odd chink of half decent stuff here & there though - a rather clean Merc 123 series - I think it was the oil burning verity too Into the mix comes a little @johnnybravo flavour Loads of stuff like this still about - sadly they all appear to be in the same condition or worse - the brown forum could hold their annual conference / gathering here on the island and would not have to ship a single motor over Finally its not just the boring everyday stuff that gets neglected, misused & abandoned

We took a trip to Budapest a couple of years ago and managed to snap some beauties. First of all, a Polski Fiat. A beautiful old Skoda by the Parliament building. We stumbled upon a Trabi tour on our first night too.

Some of todays spots include: Rover 75 in decent nick in the hotel car park - we were later to spot the very faded sign & logos of what was the islands Land Rover / Rover / MG dealer but it would appear they went by the wayside a long time ago There is no end of this type of stuff - all in use too Likewise there is a lot of parked up / semi abandoned / fully abandoned stuff Parked the hire car and went for a wonder around the traditional & quite stunning village of 'Koskinou' which is where we found this Lambretta It would appear that you get away just about any type of minimal repair - bumper on this Alfa 156 was just held on with a few bits of wire SWMBO requested a visit to the olive oil factory & shop which is where we found this little Fiat Along with loads of heavy rusty stuff knocked up to mock an original olive oil press 2 pot engined tractor Never heard of the manufacture Loads more bits of stationary engines Along with the largest 'Dellerto' that I have ever come across - however - it is a compressor and not a carb Little Mini was just being used has a prop Many other spots included a Mk1 MR2 Toyota, several 80's Jags - Mercs etc - but we were on the move so no pics - we also found the islands auto scrappy - but on a busy road and I don't speak Greek so no visit & no pics but shoved up by the gate was a stripped Yank saloon shell & a Type 2 VW van that looked complete - unsure how the scrappy stops in business though has they are so many motors abandoned you can just drive round until you find what want on something that's been dumped

It rained for some of today (we got soaked but has its such a nice temperature out here - you don't mind so much) anyhow the rain appeared to bring all the 4 x 4's out Jeep - then a few motors up from it Was the Opel clone of the Vauxhall Frontera - the Honda next to it is possibly getting thin on the ground too Defenders appear to be well liked but still rare over here The Suzuki's are well liked too and normally to be found in abundance Land Cruiser was very well cared for Slight diversion - 2 very large cruise boats were in the harbour today - it meant that the quite narrow streets of the old town were densely packed with pedestrians So this is how the local police force respond quickly to any incident Never seen so many motors on the Cusp of 'retroness' - dumped & forgotten about This is local scrap collector driving a piece of scrap - but he gets everywhere in it This is a typical sight up ever other dead end lane or street The well used And the appreciated But just occasionally you find the odd really well appreciated retro motor has was the case with little Toyota hot hatch Last day tomorrow before we fly home in the late evening

So now back in the UK - (came back home to 8 degrees a slight shock to the system) - but here's the pics from the last day In the same yard Obviously outlived its use Loads of quite elderly plant about too like this Grader - at least it was being put to full use Unlike this lot Now the Merc truck is 4 x 4 and I would have willingly brought this home with me - dropped the Hiab off the back & fitted a car transporter bed to it - obviously restoring the rest of it at the same time When questioned by SWMBO has to what I would do it - she very quickly responded that I could forget all such thoughts and that I should not be associating myself with likes of Frankenhealey which is where the idea quite probably came from in the first place So lets leave on a couple of well looked after motors of the island - nice 2CV And a well loved 2 dr Beemer Until the next hols
