I thought I'd start a thread for my new SD1 V8, at the moment it's pretty much in daily use. I saw it on Facebook Marketplace a few months ago, listed what I thought too cheaply for what it was especially as it was low mileage and a V8. Not MOT'd and off the road for nearly 20 years. I'm no stranger to SD1's, I've had a a few over the years so it took no time at all to get this one back on the road. Windscreen washers and Jets, Doors that wouldn't open, brake servo leaks and a smattering of bushes and we were away! I've been using it daily for the last month or so after it passed its test with no advisorys and have just started to modify it to my taste. It needs to be reliable as it's taking me to the Le Mans Classic next year. I have a few plans for it, the purists won't like it but I certainly will! So far the modifications are 60mm lower springs on the front with GAZ adjustable shocks, poly bushes on the anti roll bar, and a MOMO Prototipo inside as the original steering wheel was ruined. It's very scruffy (I have an idea for that) but it's never been welded and doesn't need any, and the suspension and brakes are nearly all new. Loads more to come, loads of Mods and loads of plans. Here it is -

This is the Twin Plenum I have, a long term project but one that I've always wanted! I'll start a thread at some point when I do something to it other than collect parts!

With these, whats the things to look out for when buying? The older I get the more I want one. Loving all of yours. The same as most old cars, rust! Windscreen scuttle is a common area that's no longer available as a repair panel, the strut tops, trailing arm mounts and corners of the boot floor are the usual spots. Most SD1s tend to look a lot worse than they are though which is nice. Trim parts like bumpers are getting harder to find but still alright, electrics can sometime have a mind of their own, and usually you'll find the headlining is sagging and rear speaker covers are split. Carpets and seats tend to hold up well. Mechanically they're good, suspension is basic and has really good parts availability for either OE or uprated parts. Wheels can be difficult to find alternatives as they're an odd 5x127 PCD. 6 cylinder cars are ace, and as long as they're looked after they'll go forever, and the good old V8 is well know and well respected, not massive power but that's not what they're about. I love them...they're fun, easy to work on, getting more popular and valuable, and still usable daily. Go get one!!

Great looking cars. Always liked them since I had a Corgi one as a kid. Bronze with a brown roof.

So after a couple of weeks driving the car, making sure it was fundamentally good it was time to make it more user friendly and get rid of some of the cars niggles. The first was the cracked and slightly bent steering wheel which was missing it's trim, so essentially just a hard sharp bakelite wheel that hit my knees. I had this (fake) Prototipo from another project so with the help of a Land Rover boss (same splines) So fitted that and it immediately made everything better. Next was the suspension. I coped with the knocking, creaking, groaning and clicking for a while but the boat like handling and noises just got too much, so another trip to Rimmers and I had Gaz shocks, new top mounts, poly bushes, spring seats and 60mm lowering springs. A Saturday afternoon and Rainy Sunday saw all this fitted and the result is amazing. It corners really well, rides the bumps better and all the noises are gone! They're even top adjustable. New shiny parts - All stripped down - New parts fitted and nice adjustable top mount - Next is a few more styling mods, and getting it ready for Winter!

So next up was the sunroof. I got home from work on Friday and the interior was soaking, the passenger seat and the carpet mainly. The sunroof has always been terrible and full of holes but it's obvious it needs sorting. I had a very good condition sunroof skin that came with the car, so I got some paint matched up a week or so ago, and painted it in the garage one evening. The finish is not perfect but easily as good as the rest of the car. So on Friday evening, dodging the raindrops after work I got it swapped over and I think you'll agree it looks quite a bit better. So another job ticked off the list. We celebrated with a drive to Bridlington for Fish and Chips the same night, the longest journey the car has done since 1996! Unfortunately everywhere was closed....but we had a nice drive. Next up is the cam, it's rattling quite a bit and needs changing, and I have a fast road BP270 cam that's just laying around....Also I have these...

Looking great Phil. I have the series 1 bumpers from HTU 88X a mate of mine bought them from you I believe. Did you have any issues getting the sunroof panel out? I have to change mine but the screws are seized so I will need to cut a slot in them.
Are they the rims that were on Ebay not long ago?

I bought a very early Series 2 that had them on, so changed them for the newer bumpers and sold those. The sunroof was easy to be fair, open it about halfway, undo the 4 screws in the front and then lift the front up and slide it out. The back is just secured with tabs on the sunroof into spring clips. I bought the wheels from a guy in Cheshire, he's breaking a completely rotten Twin Plenum and it had these fitted. They're 16" and genuine split rims, I can't decide if colour coded to the car looks ok or not though...

Aren't yellow head lights nice to drive with. I wasn't sure about them to begin with, to be fair I'm still not, but what I would say is that you can't really tell the difference too much when driving along, it's just a nicer light if that makes sense.

I like the split rims, colour coded centres would definitely look quite period correct though on the other hand you can't go wrong with silver centres.

That nice. I had CX’s instead of these in the late 80’s/early 90’s. They’re an itch I’ve not scratched yet. A mate had a manual 2600 in Richelieu red it sounded terrific.

The main benefit to yellow lights are meant to be in foggy/heavy rain/low visibility conditions as it doesn't reflect back at you as much and can see more
