If I go to a static show it's for the social side mostly, never really look closely at any cars unless there's something I particularly like (most recent were a Honda City Turbo 2 and a Fiat Dino Coupe). I've always preferred cruise nights, the local "legal" ones have nice cars there but they'll never have the atmosphere of the chav cruises. I think I will always love the Brighton boxing day meet because it's a semi-cruise kind of affair in that the cars will chug up and down a few times as well as park. Bit also its unorganised, informal, not arranged, not promoted or advertised. There are no marshalls, no crowds of visitors... just the cars and their drivers, and it's just there and you hear about it and go. I think that happenstance element adds a bit of energy, and it also makes it social. It's about the cars but it's also about chatting ... but importantly you don't feel you're running the risk of being bored to death if you chat to someone. The chat is about car ownership not some adenoidal spod's travails with his halfshafts that spans 15 years of engineering history and which he's going to tell you about in detail for six hours straight until you try and will yourself to die. I also do love the new years day Brooklands (static) gathering but that might be because I only go once every three years. I think my Revival fatigue is actually down to "too many mars bars" syndrome. I did used to really love it.

I used to love the Hayride (whilst still at bisley) because it wasn't a car show but some great cars were there, loads of beer, music, and friends. It had a great atmosphere and cars were always on the move either going to the dirt track or just looking cool as they were coming and going. I will try to get to the revival next year as I havn't been for years and also make an effort to get to the RR events as once again cars on the move are far more interesting. I havnt been to the new years day at Brooklands, so maybe Il give that a go next year too.

The best thing about the Brooklands event is the arriving. It attracts such a ridiculously large amount of people and you have to get there early or you wont get to park on or near the track. If you're there early though you join a huge double triple line of insanely cool and variety-rich cars, all with their engines running, and the air thick with old car fumes. The sound and the noise is awesome. It's ace. My old girl parked on the track...

Haha, that's exactly it... it's a total flip of convention. The highlight of the event is queuing to get in to the event. That's not to say the event sucks, it doesn't, it's great. But it is only a static car show (unless you're lucky enough to see a 68 Stang try to drive too high up the bank on wet January moss, then put his foot down to try and drive out of an awkward slide downwards towards very expensive metal below, thereby losing all control and gliding haphazardly in circles downwards at weird, terrifying angles in slo-mo, while people desperately try to manoeuvre their pride and joy out of its way. Then it's a very dynamic static show. )

Static cars parked in straight lines kill it for me. Cars have so much more than just a front end to look at, but at the vast majority of shows, especially straight classic shows, it's just row after row of front ends. If a show must be static, then at least get creative - park a few side-on, or facing the other way, or on a banking or whatever. I run a small show locally and it is my only rule - bring whatever you like, but don't park up the same way as the car next to you. This is where events like the revival win for me. Fantastic (or commonplace) cars just strewn all over the place, under trees, side of the road, haphazard on the grass - fantastic. Seeing a familiar car from an unfamiliar angle, and appreciating a new way for the light to sit on the surfaces or the chrome to accentuate a curve that you hadn't noticed before just makes my day.

You know, I'm so pleased to read this thread. This summer I pulled out of a couple if shows thinking 'same cars, different field, I'm getting a bit bored of this'. That's not to mean any disrespect to anyone showing or the organisers. I just felt that I had turned a corner somehow. Instead I didn't take the car to a show, I went cycling with my son. It got me thinking about shows next year. The RR Weekender was really good, Bicester and FoS. So perhaps shows that have other things going on at the same time are the key? Organised drives are great fun too, tulip maps, waypoints etc. We did the London to Brighton and thoroughly enjoyed it. Are there many if these? I haven't found any more sadly. Sorry for the long post sharing my ramblings, but it's reassuring to know it's not just me.

I guess with shows it's a sensory thing. Static shows use the sense of sight alone. If a car is moving, it's sight, sound and smell.
Going back to the OP's post, I think there's a huge difference between randomly seeing something on the road compared with seeing it at a show and it's all a matter of context. For example, I recently saw a mid-80s Ford LTD (or similar) on slightly balloon tyres in my local market town and thought it was cool, different and intriguing. Had I seen it parked in a line at a show I'm not sure I would have given it a second glance. It's all a matter of being expected or not......same as meeting someone from your area whilst on some far-flung holiday is way more interesting and significant than bumping into them at home.

I quite like static shows, but I don’t like ones where all the blue mk2 escorts park together etc I like shows like the Gathering where you have a series Land Rover parked next to Agent Thor (that’s just an example) But I do like seeing old cars out and about, and in the wild too (and especially being used, saw a HA van that a sparky uses for work in Milton Keynes today I’m same, although I don’t mind a show where the yellow mk1 Escorts are all parked together. Bit weird that, I thought 😉

When we went to the Le Mans 24 hrs about ten years ago, every motorway services, rest areas etc was a massive car show with just about everything you could imagine parked up, coming in, or just leaving. It was BRILLIANT!!!’

The problem is, shows in the UK will always be a bit *meh* compared with even a smaller show like this:
The weather, the quality of the vehicles, the vehicles themselves... and this is just a cars and coffee event.

I have a slightly hair-brained plan to spend the last day of 2019 in the workshop, putting the more important parts of car back on my car in order to drive it to Brooklands on New Year's day for the meet.
I've said similar the last two years and then failed to show up, and I'm only 50/50 I'll succeed this time (and in a very shambolic looking car if I do), but I do love the Brooklands morning and I'm desperate to drive my car, so here's hoping things fall into place.
Is anyone else planning to visit Brooklands on New Year's Day there this year?

I find them boring nowadays. I used to go to lots of mini shows religiously but I got quickly bored of looking at minis dressed up in fancy dress or concours cars with people polishing the tyre tread with a cotton bud. Expensive and curse word food and very little atmosphere. The best show I went to was the Roadkill meet at EBC brakes. I didn't know what to expect and that added to the excitement. A bit like the original post about seeing the pick up on the high street,it was out of place and unexpected. I went to a land rover show in the summer only to go back to my car to find it had an attempted theft,so I guess that's another minus to attending shows. Another negative to shows are how people outside of the hobby view it. Countless videos of cars leaving shows spinning the wheels up showing off to onlookers doesn't do us any favours either.
