Just got a new retro today. USA import Mercedes 250. Plans are to do sod all apart from lower it slightly, it’s far too high for my liking! Anyone ever lowered one? I can only find h&r 55mm spring kits for them on ebizzle. Anyway, a few pics.

Just cut the springs, my friend, they'll be fine. No need to spend your hard earned on the that. If you have a look there should be some info on how BenzBoy and Dez did theirs. I, and others did it on W123s without probs. Not too sure how similar 114s are. What I will say is if you go too low you'll eat tyres and driveshafts. Edited to say, that's cool as fcuk.

Yeah, chop em them spend the money on some shorter front shocks instead. I had Suzuki samurai ones on my bagged one, they worked well although you will have to make some bottom mount tabs.

Thanks for the info guys. I don’t want to deck it, I want to lose the arch gap at the front tho. 2 coils off the front? 1 at the back maybe? I’ve really no idea on mercs, this is my first one.... I’m a vw man usually, glad to be away from them tho. So any info, even if you think you’re teaching me to suck eggs, just shove it my way please.

Oh that's a lovely example. Nice putchase! With the front springs, there are three or four "dead coils" at the bottom, so that makes it easy to cut the coils and still have them seat properly. I'd say start with two coils and see where you're at. You can get different thickness rubber top isolator pads from Mercedes, if you want to fine tune the ride height. I think there are 3 thicknesses available. Rears I swapped the springs for shorter ones, so I can't advise on chopping them.
Spring removal on the front is a bit dodgy if you don't have the proper spring compressor tool. Ordinary compressors don't work as there's not enough room to put them on, you need the internal compressors. You can either buy / borrow the correct tool, make one yourself, or do it the dodgy way by putting a trolley jack under the lower arm, undoing the inner pivot bolts and VERY carefully lowering the jack until the spring is free. I'd recommend situating yourself at the front of the car for this, then if the spring does go ping it's less likely to hit you.
On the rear I had to cut the drop stops off to get the arm to move low enough to get the spring out. I also had to undo the driveshaft nut at the outer end to let the driveshaft slide out and not stop the arm lowering (only a 13mm bolt, nothing drastic)
Running very low can kill your driveshafts. Mine held up fine despite being very low, but others have smashed their CV joints. Years ago it didn't matter that much as they were quite plentiful but these days parts are getting rare and pricey.

I agree, you deffo have to cut the drop stops off at the rear to get the springs out, and undo the driveshaft centre bolts. Tbh, the rear can be a bit of pig to get apart. As for removing the fronts, I have a patented* technique that involves jacking it up, taking the wheels and shocks off and hooking the springs out with a 5’ crowbar! It’s actually far safer than it sounds, as you can stand well out the way whilst doing it, you aren’t under the car and you’re not undoing anything under tension. and the shape of the upper and lower springs cups means it’s always the bottom one comes out first and fires them at the floor- I wrap a big heavy rag around them first and it catches em and absorbs the impact. . Probly best not to try it when H&S are around though 🤣
2 coils all round is a good starting point. I think my yellow one had 4 out the front and 3 out the back in the end!
One massive advantage you have is lhd cars have a much better exhaust route, they don’t hang down as much.

Thanks for the compliments and the advice guys. Really appreciate it!
Need a rear screen seal as being a Cali car, it’s kinda perished in the heat.
I’ve had ‘decked’ stuff in the past, and I mean DECKED! These days I want a stance, but I still want comfort... especially in this.
I’ll have a fettle in the coming week and update accordingly chaps, thanks.

Haven’t got round to doing much to this yet. I did get one of the headlights working, I was expecting to find a bulb gone, but the headlights seem to be sealed bulbless units? A wiggle and clean of the connector fixed it anyway. I did fit the uk plates as I can’t be doing with any agro from the police.

If they're sealed beams you would certainly benefit from an H4 conversion kit. Much better light! Love these Mercedes - and this colour really suits the shape, cracking car!

Took 3 off the front and 2 off the rear. Much better. But strangely the car sits higher on the front passenger side, it sat wonky before the spring chop too. Both top caps seemed in good condition?? Any remedies?

Bookmarked. Love that mint interior, looks brand new
Have you looked at the suspension wishbones to see if anything looked bent? I can't imagine how they could be bent to do that though. I have my w114 suspension in bits at the moment and the most likely thing I think is that one of your springs is tired. Or just maybe the diagonally opposite spring is too high and pushing that side down?
Whereabouts are you, I'm going to air-ride mine so don't need the front springs if you want them. According to the datacard of mine I had stronger springs for rough roads though that doesn't mean it's what I have now of course. A lot unofficial changes happened to mine in the 45 years before I got it.
Oh, is the difference such that a different rubber at the top of the spring would put it right? Ie biggest rubber on left, smallest on right?
Hmm just noticed your chrome window trim is different to mine (same year), I wonder if mine is just missing.

It could be a number of factors Tbf. I was thinking of going with a thicker top cap on the slightly lower drives side front. As the ones on it now must be the slimmest you can buy, they’d be non existent if they were any thinner.
I’ll try and get it on level ground at the weekend and measure all 4 corners to see where it’s at... as said, it was on the wonk pre cut, so something is tired somewhere.
I’m located in Oxfordshire mate, where are you?

Or chop a slither more off the spring on the higher side.
