Good morning. We are new to the forums, and thought we would introduce our recently purchased classic car to you, a 1988 TVR 280 series 1. The car is quite a good example of the model. But, with all TVRs the car came with its problems which we are sorting. Examples of issues; The bonnet would not stay locked down when going over bumps, but this has now been sorted. Other things sorted is a manual override on the electric cooling fan. We have a small oil leek to sort on the left hand back rocker cover. Also, the exhaust is fouling the engine sump, probably it has taken a bump at some point due to low ground clearance. We are looking to take the car to a number of car shows in the near future. Are there any TVR owners on the board?
We have a few videos of the car on our YouTube channel.

Engine Oil LeakWhen we bought the car the seller told me that the car had a problem with the engine leaking oil at one of the exhaust manifold ports, which seemed odd. It turned out that the engine had a slight oil leak at the nearside bank rocker cover gasket, so a new one with some sealant was purchased to repair. Someone had attempted to paint the engine seemingly to disguise the oil leak, a rather strange idea of hiding what is a simple repair. The first manifold port gasket on the nearside has the very slightest trace of a gas leak, but it looks like the gasket is very old and weak, so that will soon be replaced, we have the parts to replace them all. See below video ---> Oil leak videoThere is also a slight engine leak from the crankshaft rear main seal of the engine. That will remain as it is until it is time to remove the gearbox during future maintenance. The engines in the TVR series one are from the MK3 2.8 injection Ford Capri if you had not guessed already. Later models were fitted with the 2.9 injection engine. Electric Cooling FanThe fan failed to work during a trip out to a TVR Car Club meeting on one of the hottest days so far this year. Consequently, I almost got home but had to pull over about 2 miles from home to allow the engine coolant to cool down. Decision made, a bypass switch was installed which would allow me to operate the cooling fan as I felt was necessary, which is now working perfectly fine.

Ah... Fan 'override' Fitted one on my Skoda RE Rapid... Such a long distance twixt Hot engine/Cooling rad caused lag, from fan cutting in when engine too hot - in queuing traffic :/ Good fix.... Problem solved (it was a 'glow when on' Red rocker switch) OVIMOR

fantastic, there's several cars i'm unlikely to own, but i have a kind of mind plan of what i would, if i did? (does that make sense ?) 280S is in the tvr category !
no granny + egg sucking intended, but fans are an auxiliary device, if it overheated while driving then turning the fan on is treating the symptoms, rather than fixing the cause, there may be something more sinister.

".... rather than fixing the cause, there may be something more sinister." Yes, it was 30+ degree weather :-) I have driven it several times without the bright yellow thing in the sky and all has been fine engine temperature wise.

That's a lovely car. Just caught up with the TVR updates on your Youtube page, and look forward to seeing more.
I have a Tasmin myself, it's bit of a love/hate relationship at the moment, lol.

Thanks for stopping by. I have been to look at your website, good to see another TVR owner ... I also saw that you owned a Rover SD1 Vitesse, a car I once wanted to own. I got as far as a couple of 2600cc SD1 models, but that was it.
