We all like a bit of music in our lives, and I especially like a few tunes whilst I beaver away on the Midas. Now, I like old school stuff. I have never downloaded a tune in my life and prefer to have something I can hold and use at any time if the internet goes down. I have hundreds of CDs and lots of my old tapes still work perfectly. I know they're an ancient thing nowadays but they have a charm and I can't throw them out. I started off with my Mum's old portable Panasonic radio/tape/CD player, but as that was 20 years old and had had a hard life with my Mum's Glenn Campbell and Barbara Dickson tapes, it soon shuffled off to the "Small Appliances" container at the dump. This was replaced with my mate Liz's old Sharp Minidisc hi-fi. This worked for a while, but then it wouldn't play CDs and the radio reception was rubbish. So I junked it off in favour of a similar system from my work colleague Merv. This was going the same way as Liz's after a couple of years' use, so I started to think about alternatives. When I first started working back in the early 90s, I always promised myself a really good stack system, so I built one up bit by bit and it still works today. At least it did until recently, when my 27-year-old Technics receiver amp started playing up. The volume wouldn't turn down. Great for AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" but not for Mrs Bounce's nerves, the cats or the nice quiet close I live in. I bought a replacement for Β£30 from eBay (works perfectly) then started to investigate repairing the old one. Apparently it's a common fault and is usually to do with dust getting stuck in the volume control. I gave it a good dose of contact cleaner and it's (almost) perfect again. So I junked Merv's old system bar the speakers and put the old receiver amp in the Manroom. Then a trip to eBay and a local boot sale saw me grab a CD player and a Tape deck too. I know it's overkill, I know it's a bit silly now you can put hundreds of songs on your phone, but I love the old stuff, it sounds fantastic and I don't have a worry if it gets damaged. You can pick replacements up for buttons. Gotta love a bit of Technics 90s gear!! What's in your garage?

I donβt have a garage (itβs the dream, one day Iβll have a garage or maybe even a driveway) but that very same technics CD player you have is sat in my lounge. Bought it new in 1999 and still going strong.
Likewise I only really do cd/minidisc/cassette/vinyl and mw radio.
Iβve got a workshop with an 80s Ghettoblaster in it ftw

I like old tunes but not the space it takes to keep them, so I digitalized my cds, tapes and records along time ago. When I got me a garage and was fed up listening to crappy radio stations, I got me this multi source (usb, sd, bluetooth + am/fm) thingy which sounds better than expected for what it did cost:

I quite like the tranquility of solitude when I'm working in my garage, and I enjoy the peace! But in the house I have an old Kenwood stacking system that I listen to my Records, CDs, and Tapes on. Other than that, it's Radio 2 all the way for me too. Except when that dreadful Vanessa Feltz is on. I can't stand that woman! Oh come on Vanessa, any good story teller will tell you that if you're going to make up a story you need to keep it inside the borders of credibility! He'd probably be happier playing with his didgery-doo!

WTF IS THAT POST! ^^^^^ Anyway I'm moving this to Garage Life as it feels like exactly the sort of thing that should be discussed in there. Later on I shall take a photo of my garage sound system and post in here

I used to just play music through the car but the neighbours 4 doors down have a new baby so can't anymore. Just got a cheap music station I bought while I was in Germany now, works OK.

Ive got an old technics stacker setup indoors that gets cained every so often, and a stack of higher quality stuff but its not being used at the moment. Ive got a simple cheap tape/Cd boombox in the garage. Everything tends to get covered in dust and wotnot so theres no point having anything decent out there, plus the garage tends to make music sound louder outside the garage and due to the variety of music I listen too, from ear-melting dubstep to the wombles, I wouldnt subject my neighbours to that. I don't download music at all, I tend to buy cheap CDs from carboots, the tip, and charity shops. My taste in music used to be quite narrow, so there loads of new old stuff out there for me to find.

Stacks, or should that be Stax, of Northern Soul, Japanese Funk, Nujabes, and curiously enough, this week I have been currently listening to the early recordings of Ella Fitzgerald in her big band days. I can have it loud as my garage is insulated and it can barely be heard outside.

The other week while working on the drive when it was really hot and struggling to work on a seat in a confined space the last thing I needed was a distraction. The guy across the road was washing his car and listening to the test match on the car radio... politely told him I didn't want to listen to the cricket.
I guess that means I'm a grumpy old man! I did explain later that I was really stressed out and it was a distraction.

I had a spare pa system left over from gigging, so have a 1kw amplifier driving 2 12" mids and 2 14" bass speakers.
It's never turned up loud, but even on low it still easy to have it loud enough to hear over the grinder!
Feed wise I use either a CD player or a bluetooth dock and music off my phone.
The radio irritates me, so its normally a rotation of 70s to modern punk, ska, rock, and metal.
When I enjoy my flavour of music, so does the village.

Either you've got a very quiet grinder or your defi ition of loud is somewhat different to most ππ

A number of years playing in a band mean my hearing response may not be as good as it should π
I don't normally have it up loud enough for this.... honest. Usually only when my neighbor has chav pop on.

Must be using a pa system or something! π Nah, we'd get on fine! At school I use my laptop plugged into the speakers for my interactive whiteboard and at the unit we just have a succession of cheap crappy CD players. When they die, they hit the bin and another comes from freecycle. Oh, if anyone wants their heads messing with musically, go to YouTube and search for Bill McClintock - you'll thank me for it later...

I listen to Absolute 90's on the digital radio... plays all my old faves (radiohead, oasis, shed7, charlatans, mansun, etc etc ) and none of the crappy 90's boy band rubbish... it's pretty good, and if it gets too much I just switch to Absolute 80's for a bit of OMD and Depeche Mode

Nothing fancy in my workshop but it is digital With the workshop being used constantly for restorations & paintwork I cant have anything that wont put up with large amounts of dust & I don't have a great deal of space so it has to be small - also has to be accessible so that I can turn it up when my favourites are played or down when the phone rings or I have a visitor - of recent times its become a pig to retune to different radio stations hence its stuck on radio 2 which suits me just fine with the exception of when either Liza Tarbuck or Elaine Paige are on - at which point I turn it off has I cant stand the irritation of either of them
