Really progress. Apart from details the front end is as it should be again. The front bumper was a nightmare; as it holds the counterweight it is really heavy. Trying to move that in area's of fresh paint is a challenge.
Really like this blue too; it turns out this is a Renault blue from 2002.

Looking good! Did you colorcode the logo or was it like that? It looks just right like that.

Looking good! Did you colorcode the logo or was it like that? It looks just right like that. It was done previously. This actually isn't the normal logo but a custom made one. It looks so good (and much more minimalistic) that I kept it this way.
As you can see; the logo that should be there is quite big. So good idea of that previous owner.

I remember seeing one of these little things at a car show some years ago, I thought it was so cool... and minuscule! You're making great progress there, looking forward to seeing more.
What's the black stuff you're using for the rust treatment? Looks like what I'm needing for my Alfa.
Bedankt, tot ziens!

What's the black stuff you're using for the rust treatment? Looks like what I'm needing for my Alfa. Bedankt, tot ziens! It gave to me a new meaning to the term pocket rocket... By numbers it is not impressive but it sure feels fast.
I scrape off any loose paint, grind down rust area's, then cover all in a rust convertor (I use multiple brands) and then finish off with black Hamerite. And don't forget undercoating in wax form. I did the same on my Alfa (that had nothing more than a little surface rust in a few area's) and that has held up very good. But I rarely drive it in the rain and never in winter. It's also stored inside during winter. The Suzuki gets the same treatment.
Graag gedaan!

The last rust on the left rear has been taken care off.
Before
After
While being close to finished my welding machine broke. Only 2 months old. As it was solid I just finished as-is. Due to the shape I had difficulty getting the grinder there so I used a bit more sealant then normally. Still good results.
The welding machine was replaced without costs (good service!) so I'm able again.
Currently making steps in preparing the outer sheetmetal. It will get (most of) its paint before welding in place. That's a bit in the wrong order but I do so because I'm a much better painter for horizontal surfaces than vertical. The edges where I will be spotwelding it to the chassis are mostly hidden so I can paint those seperate and when on the car.

There is a bit of time pressure on the Suzuki. I've bought a house with garages. So the Suzuki needs to be able to move to be brought over. It will get a lot easier to work on cars there.

The wheels were returned to me sans their rubber surroundings. So now I could finally clean them up a little.
As they have been used for years with inner tube (but tubeless tyres) it seems they did not hold air very well. The front ones were just like it. Inner tube in a tubeless tyre is a sure way to get fritction inside and rapid wear so you will get many leakages. So don't do it. With the fronts it was harder to see but with the rears the edge on the wheel where the tyre needs to seal off against was very dirty, with rubber remains, and likely not an air-tight seal. So after a lot of sanding it was clean again.
These wheels were a Suzuki dealer option. And believe it or not these are wider than standard.
I have send the wheels back to get new rubber. Chinese tyres as hardly any company still makes tyres this small. It will be fine. Top speed is anyway just about 140km/h.
To do something else I have also started some maintenance work on the engine.
The V-belt, cambelt, cambelt roller, waterpump, thermostat, fuel hoses, vacumm hoses and some coolant hoses are replaced. And where I go I clean up and paint here and there. There is a thick layer of oily sand everywhere and where there isn't there was paint flaking off the engine and looking rusted underneath. Some of the wiringharnesses can use work also.
Replacing the exhaust from the manifold. Someone "modded" the exhaust into a dual outlet for which they cut up the bodywork. It was leaking and it also made it impossible (without burning your hands) to reach the oil filler / dipstick when the engine had been running. Now it is back to it's tiny exhaust outlet.
I was initially happy to find the rear trailing arms to be OK on rust. They commonly suffer from it. But as I was cleaning them I did find a little hole, And another. And another... I found used but not rusted ones via the SC100 owners club here (not cheap) so I'm prepping those to go on. Mine are salvagable so I will repair them and keep them as spares.
The used replacements have to be cleaned also before receiving extensive rustproofing. Only then they will be made ready for the car.

Nice inspiration! Those rally lights are very much of the time. It might be cool to add them.
Yesterday evening I got the engine to run again. It took a bit of an effort as it turned out the timing belt was one tooth off... I blame the distortion effect of the mirror that I had to use to see the markings. This time I made sure I used the mirror in the same position for cam wheel and crank wheel to have the same distortion.
After warming up it developed a sudden coolant leak. One of the hose clamps was too close to the end of the hose and wiggled itself off the hose from the heat expansion. Never seen that happen before but I'm sure it can happen. It is one of the hoses I replaced. Unavailable for Suzuki so I had to resort to ordering a Honda hose of the same dimensions and cut that up to fit. I'm sure the fitting isn't as perfect as it should be but with a good hose clamp it should be OK. So I'll have to go back in and place and tighten the hose clamp properly this time.
Apart from that; the clutch bearing is a little noisy. I had the experience also with the Alfa that long standstills can make them noisy. Sometimes they recover a little when in use. Still I will keep my eyes open for a new one. Something for next year maybe. The one on the Alfa has made steady noise for 3 or 4 years now but functions still fine. So no rush.

Nice work - when I looked at an earlier picture I thought they don't normally have twin pipes out the back - I remember them having little pea shooters - the more recent posts explain why I honestly can't remember the last time I saw one of these but I used to see a few on a regular basis - seeing the rust repairs on yours it explains why they vanished overnight Looking on line seems just 14 in the UK are currently licenced...... (There are 80 plus on SORN mind so maybe a few out there being saved or stored)

The "no events" rules now extend to September 1st here. Just as in Belgium and in Germany. So Japan Classic Sunday (good representation from the UK always) that I kept as a sort of deadline is now cancelled. And overall it is safe to state that likely there will not be any car events this year; other than maybe a very small cars & coffee in autumn.
The classic car workshop that helps me to keep my cars going (they do some of the jobs I don't feel like doing myself, that require special equipment or that require an independent view such as MOT) is noticing the effect in that people are taking the chance to get a lot of things done. So they are running late on the Corvette (also pushed back by slow parts delivery now) and have also asked for some more time before I bring the Suzuki to them.
So that means that I now just have to make sure the Suzuki can make it to the new house. I will still try to get MOT on it later in summer. Without doubt more things will pop-up once we start using it a little and then I can make plans for next year on what to repair. I learned from the Alfa that there is always a big list of fixes just after you started using a car for the first time in years; even if it was restored or fixed.
To make the Suzuki moving again I needed to finish up welding of the left side panel. Apart from a few smaller pieces that is now done. I've started to grind the welds down and to apply a little bondo to those area's. So with a bit more sanding and painting the welds it would be ready again to put the parts on. All the parts have been cleaned and repaired. Only the chrome bumper still needs a little polish.
On May 4th we will get the keys to the house. So then I will be able to start moving the cars to there. And to start working on household projects for some time instead of cars.

Feeling a little time pressure to get the Suzuki back together before moving I wanted to complete it to MOT acceptable state. And finishing the work that I had been doing so far. Not there yet but big steps taken.
Some last missing piece of metal.. Took ages to get it fit just right. This was about halfway.
Having already finished the rear before this needed only assembly.
The original bumper back on. I have a slightly better one (with rusty brackets) which will get prepared at a later day to swap them.
And at the other end (the B-pillar) things started to look proper again also.
The rear suspension is also back together, anti-rust wax and undercoating have been applied where needed, etc.
So just some minor assembly work, a little bit of paint here and there and I need to pick-up the wheels with the new tyres on and then it should be able to drive under own power to the new house or to the MOT station (whichever comes first).
I do have a little welding to do on the right side before MOT. Most of the rust there however stays for now as it should be OK for MOT which means I can tackle it later. Like next autumn or spring.
