Yes, I think that making a Lotus lookalike out of this generation Carlton will only look like a parody, nothing I would do myself at least. Interesting project, and it will probably not be any worse than the stock 2,3D lump that at least were available in the Rekord.

What rear axle do you use? Longer/lower ratio? Or will it make 4k rpm at 65mph.

Thanks for the interest in this chaps, I'll try and answer some questions and give an update later in the week, still fairly knackered from the weekend and week before!
I took the week off ahead of RRG and ended up not taking it for MOT as I just ran out of energy and had a couple of small final issues (brake line union and indicators deciding they were done with life completely)
Other than that, it runs and moves, coolant fan works, vac pump works, electric PAS seems to work.

Not too bad.. 3k rpm gets you 76 mph. 4k rpm for 102mph.

So, I had the previous weekend off to just chill out, I'd put a lot of hours in on the Carlton pre-RRG and I was totally shattered. Those of you that know me know that my mojo comes and goes like the weather, so not feeling particularly like doing any spanner twirling I thought I'd do the classic mojo booster... taking it outside and giving it a good old wash. The old girl is grimy to say the least Clearly had some work done on the back quarter at some point in its life... I suspected this dirt on the (aftermarket) sunroof was the reason it leaks So gave that as good a clear out as I could with a bit of cloth. Old toothbrush and removing the glass completely is needed really. A rinse and a wash later and she looks half presentable The paint does NOT look this good IRL. Anyone got good tips on removing rust stains? There was a stanley blade left here for god knows how many years! Sunroof still leaks, hoping it was just where I couldnt clean the seal at the front (plus i think the hinges need some adjustment Its still a curse word to start from cold, I should really wire in the glow plugs (IDIs really don't like starting without them) I shall look at the actual MOT issues next week I think. Indicators havent fixed themselves yet ...and now the drivers door doesnt open from the inside. Ho-hum.... onwards!

Haha, yeah we did get a few with those (we actually have one in a CF, but not the right gearbox). Honestly this is just down to me being curious about how much an Isuzu TD will take, and the Carlton just happened to be there without an engine, with the 1.8 gearbox ready to bolt up (I'm hoping I get to the point that I need to upgrade this). I had contemplated some sort of Isuzu with handling by Lotus type badging like on certain Troopers (along with the slot-mag-a-like wheels) but I don't really like any badging at all to be fair.

Also, the gearbox/clutch area is still clattering when the clutch pedal isn't fully depressed and its at or near idle.
We have had the gearbox off, checked flywheel bolt torque, that the spigot bushing was ok, checked the pressure plate torque, found some snapped ears on the thrust bearing so replaced that with a good known spare, adjusted the pedal up to the correct location and it still does it. I have no idea at the moment, but at least I know its not planning on taking my legs off any time soon

If it's R25 or Getrag of some description they are renowned for chattering at idle

Also looks to me like that sunroof will come right out normally the pop up lever has some sort of slider or cover clip that means you can take it completely out - that makes cleaning much easier - plus you can tighten the clip in end (bend the tangs) a bit to increase pressure on a tired seal The stanley blade rust stain - t-cut or rubbing compound

Whats the normal cause? Tired input shaft bearing or something?

Bilt hamber Korrosol iron remover will get that rust mark off no bother, just spray on and watch it do its magic, then jetwash or hose off.
Is that a cheeky wing exit exhaust i see? Hard to see in the pics

britax sunroof. been a year or 20...but if i remember right , there should be a (red?) button that releases the handle from the frame so you can lift the panel off the car.

Little update on this to try and gee me up and share some photos.
- Did valve clearances... now starts much much better. (Funny that, having full compression on all 4 instead of 1 cylinder!)
- Coilovers mostly made for the front, with I think S14 (or was it subaru?) topmounts. Photos to come. Full droop is now the same as the original ride height.
I'm mainly tidying up loose ends at the moment with a view to an MOT. I got so burnt out on this I have only done bits here and there.
Honestly I think I need to tear it down again and re-do a lot of the things that annoy me every time I look under the bonnet!
