When i was about 17 and my Avenger had died i was gifted a Cortina Estate with what i can only describe as an mot issued with great amounts of artistic licence. Damn thing was rotten , really rotten. every panel was fubar'd including the structural bits. To stop the rear door flying open as they often did with only minor enthusiastic driving i had a bungee strap between them to hold them closed. just like this one, only covered in black patches where the previous owner had painted rust remover on the rusty patches, with massive futility i might add

Sadly no pictures, but a couple of prime bodges... First my sisters 1st car, Mk1 Escort(which dates it to mid/late 80s)...passenger floor fell out when I walked past it...turned out to be an old baking tray held in with bondo!
Second, more recently, was fault finding electrics on the Ducato, checked the fuse to find 15a replaced by half a spring washer?

Had to revive this thread due to what I found on a car recently. At least somehow I know it hasn't been driven very far like this ...

Loads of stuff considered a bodge back in the day, would be thought of as sackable offences now. I’ve been on the hard shoulder with a truck, wound the spring brake off, cut the pipes, bent them over & cable tied them & sent it probably 200 miles. Get it fixed when you’ve dropped your load would probably be the parting comment. And you know what? The Coppers loved it, just wanted it off their stretch. Very different world

Worst highly successful bodge: I was on a charity rally in a ropey F series Vauxhall Victor. We hit a stretch of road so rough that the car was flexing all over the place - doors were jamming, trims were falling off, and eventually the radiator twisted enough to split a seam. After running dry a few times trying different fixes we were towed into camp. In camp a donated Datsun ute radiator was fitted to replace the split one. It was teck screwed and cable tied into place, the outlets were on the wrong sides so multiple radiator hoses from the spares box were clamped together, using part of an Alfa exhaust that had fallen off as a joiner. The new hoses ran over and under the fan.
By the end of the rally a headlight trim was held on with race tape, the bottom of a front guard had part of a stubbie holder gaffa taped into it to stop a rattle, and the roof rack had cracked and was straightened and reinforced by 4 tent pegs hose clamped over the crack. Not only did it go just fine, but it returned to the rally the following year with the same radiator and roof rack bodges.
Just a taste of some of the incredible things done to keep cars going on that event.

it returned to the rally the following year with the same radiator and roof rack bodges. Surely by that point it's no longer a bodge!

Plenty of bodges become permanent features of cars in my experience it returned to the rally the following year with the same radiator and roof rack bodges. Surely by that point it's no longer a bodge!

Not sure where this qualifies on the "bodge" scale in respect of awful or epic? Kudos that they seemingly have tried to keep a fused link(but then not sure the 'bung' isn't a wire link🤔)...Amusingly I don't have any glass fuses to hand so it can stay there a couple of days long

wasn't a car, but a motorcycle.. and i wish i could find the photos.
1994 FZR600r, they have an in-tank fuel pump, now the bike had clearly sat some time and inside of the tank had rusted up, presumably killing the pump..
Previous owner had pulled the pump unit out... and then ripped the in tank pump out, bodged on a dubious ebay special in-line one outside the tank, but just sat it on top of the gearbox, with nothing holding it in place, and despite taking the pump out they hadn't bothered to clean all the loose rust and silt out of the tank, not even the slightest attempt.
had a very bendy MOT on it too, and the mileage seems ever more suspicious... I should have cut my losses after i fixed the tank, most unreliable vehicle i have ever owned.
Currently swapping all the good parts onto the better one i bought a month ago.. then it can be someone else's problem.
New one isn't without issues either, has brake hoses fitted recently, presumably by a gorilla as they had tightened everything up to 1000nm, snapping off two of the m6 bolts holding the hose brackets, and then proceeded to superglue one of them back on! at least they were easy to extract
