Sorry for the modern-ish content. But I've seen a couple of people here mention their Volvo XC70's My little Seat Leon 3-door really needs to be replaced by something bigger to lug around panels and axles etc for the restorations I've got on the go. I've always been happy with my VAG daily drivers, but this is a good opportunity to try something different, and I've never owned a Volvo. I'm thinking the cheaper end of the market - Circa 2005 diesel
- Must have black interior ( it is going to be a parts chaser after all)
- £2-£3K seems enough to buy one with less than 200K on the clock
- Edging towards a manual, but will be happy with an auto
I don't need the 4x4, so a plain vanilla V70 would do, but I don't want one of those, I want the XC Anybody tell me I'm doing the right/wrong thing ? As a pennance - a picture og a highly modified one (I'll probably just put a Bluetooth dongle in mine, and call it good)

I used to drive them a lot when I delivered demo cars for a living, always liked them, nice drive and reasonable handling, only thing I found is that the trim didn't seem to stand up to abuse like the earlier stuff, although how much of that was down to"it's not my car" I don't know, but I did consider one myself

Mrs procrastinator tried one of the first ones a while back. No procrastinating, hated it. Very thirsty diesel engine and interior cheap and plastic. Vw Touareg or an Audi q7? Q7 with 4.2 tdi has huge power figures, even better than the 5.0 v10 Touareg.

I considered one earlier this year to replace my 960 which blew up but ended up going for a RR L322 as it had a higher tow rating, quite like it now, as practical as any big estate plus go anywhere 4x4 and 3.5t towing capacity

Thanks all - I looked at two slightly later/more expensive ones yesterday. The 08 Auto was a hound, horrible diesel clatter and oil in the expansion tank. But the 07 Manual was a lot sweeter - left a deposit on that one, and plan to pick it up on Sunday

Can't go wrong with a Volvo. Comfy and will carry anything. D5 engine is a peach (Coming from an '07 S60 driver)

I'm biased towards Mercedes but what about a Mercedes ML. Plenty about cheap. Not Mercedes's finest hour but cheap. Maybe a bit small compared to the Volvo though

Maybe a bit small compared to the Volvo though They're cheap because they go wrong a lot. The diesel engines have expensive issues, transmissions fail, the interior trim, fittings and electrics are hopeless, and the whole car rusts badly. And they don't drive as well as a Range Rover which has a lot of similar issues.

My 2p.... Yes you should but not diesel d5 ESPECIALLY the geartronic /auto. Modern ish d5 xc70 money will land you a half decent t5 or older R.

The Autos are OK with care and the right fixes done. Same for the D5s. The problem? They are cheap enough where they have got into the 'wrong' hands, like many cars of this age.
Me? I wouldn't worry about mileage, but I'd buy the best condition one you can afford. if it's the right car, you'll know. Bruce Holder here bought one on post 200k and his gave few issues for all of the miles he piled on.

I didn't want an SUV, such as a Range Rover or ML - I've had a few in the past, but it is wagons I like This is parked outside my house now Its a manual D5, previous owner was a Doctor who got it regularly serviced. 131K on the clock and an 07 facelift Really nice black interior, never had a tow bar (that won't last) I'm just dicking around adding dashcams for the cheaper insurance and phone chargers and roof bars. Goes in next week for a preventative service and cambelt before I take it round Europe in August.

I ran one for about 9 months last year, an '07 Diesel auto and had no issues with it at all. I bought it cheapish at auction and loved it. Really comfortable, especially on a run (I drove it from Surrey to North Coast of Scotland almost non stop and it was lovely. Never really checked fuel consumption, but don't remember ever thing it was below what you'd expect from a car of that size. It was high-ish mileage but 1 owner and full Volvo SH which probably helped. I'd have another with no hesitation.

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

When I look 3 years ago, decent T5Rs were £5k+ for something that wasn't a bad of turds full of rust, get-me-home repairs or iffy bodywork (R bumper is now unavailable, making replacments very pricey when they turn up). That's part of the reason why I bought the M3 back then. A shame as I've always fancied a T5 but not for the cash they command now for something which isn't tired or will always need money throwing at it.

Related question: Anyone have experience of the earl-ish XC90s? I kinda like the 4+litre V8 ones, but suspect the Diesel is better for towing (cars and such). Anything to be concerned about with them?

Anything to be concerned about with them? The Yamaha V8 sounds lush. This won't help too much, but check out early XC90's on the road - there aren't many. They used to be everywhere, so something is killing them.

Anything to be concerned about with them? I run an 04 xc90 d5, very heavy on suspension components(but all volvo diesels are tbf) tow brilliantly, get gearbox oil changed if towing. Earlier 163bhp are stronger cars by all accounts, later 185bhp although quicker are fitted with dpf whereas earlier 163 don't. 185 have 6 speed auto box, 163 only 5 speed auto..

One of the reasons I wanted the XC70 was for a European road trip I had planned, and just got back from 1700 miles went without a hitch at 40mpg - yep happy with that. Here it is parked in a laybay in the Swiss Alps
