Hi everyone, I thought I’d start a thread on here on my Volvo 850 Having wanted a Gul yellow 4 door T-5R with manual gearbox for a while and never being in a position to purchase one before and them not exactly being common I finally managed to get my hands on one in September 2016. The car was in great condition with a mileage of 108k.It had a fair amount of money spent on it by the previous owner. With the rims being refurbed, new front and rear bumper tops (the sun usually destroys these making them loose their colour and look terrible), stainless exhaust, new engine mounts and various other mechanical item replaced. It also came with a stack of history which showed Volvo UK as being the cars first registered keeper. I started doing a little research on the vehicle and soon discovered it was used for press duties while in the hand of Volvo UK and appeared in a couple of car magazines from 1995 I managed to get hold of the full set of pictures from one of the magazine shoots....at great expense! It is nice having some professionally taken shots of the car when it was only a few weeks old though. It also appeared in some promotional marketing for the Volvo BTCC I believe the car may have also been used for driver parade laps in the BTCC but I’m still trying to get confirmation of this. So after finding out about about the cars history the first thing I did was to get replica number plates made up of the originals in the correct font as can be seen in the first picture. The only other things i did I did to the car before putting it away for winter in 2016 was to get he cambelt replaced and the alternator after it decided it’d had enough! When it came to taking the car out of storage in March 2017 the car had other ideas and just didn’t want to fire up. This was traced to old corroded wiring on the fuel injection relay. With the wiring repaired most of the main engine sensors, coil pack and fuel pump relay were replaced as a preventative measure given the age of all these parts.

The next thing to address on the car were the tyres as the fronts were getting low. As the car was still wearing the correct but NLA Pirelli Pzero Asimmetrico tyres I wanted to keep hold of them for originality should I ever decide to show the car. Therefore the hunt was on for a spare set of rims, I got lucky here and found these which were promptly sent off for a full refurb. And then fitted along with a new set of centre caps Due to life getting in the way, apart from an oil change this was the only work carried out on the car for the rest of 2017 2018 saw issues with a sticking front calliper which had over heated and warped the disc addressed. A previous owner had painted hand painted the calipers and disc hubs to quite a poor standard so I replaced the lot both front and rear with new discs/pads and refurbished callipers. Brake flexi hose were changed along with a few of the hard brake lines which had siezed on the unions when getting in to the job. Rear Front This was the only major work carried out on the vehicle in 2018 with the car again being stored away over winter.

Always loved these! Must have been quite a surprise to find out it was an former press/demo/promo car. Oh completely, it makes it just that little bit more special! The car car flew through it’s MOT this year with just a weeping coolant radiator pointed out by the tester. The mileage also hit 110k and the car decided to celebrate this by letting go of its rear main crank seal. So that’s something else that now needs fixing. So today I started work on changing the radiator, everything came apart great with just one stubborn bolt encountered. I had a new genuine Volvo radiator ready to go on but with the intercooler off it became clear that the mounting plates on the cooler were just too far gone for it to go back on and unfortunately they’re only available as part of the intercooler. So that brings it all up to date. Just waiting on a price and availability check on a replacement intercooler from Volvo. Worst case scenario I’ll have to drop an aftermarket item in there but I’d rather keep it original.

Oh wow that is some machine. Can't beat an 850r. Nice to see it's staying original as Volvo got it right first time.

Finally got some time on this again to get the new radiator and cooler on. New genuine Volvo Radiator And intercooler Just about there and all back together with no major issues. Next job while it’s drained of coolant is to replace the turbo water hoses and one of the heater hoses. That’s all the original hoses renewed then. Fff

Lovely story behind this and glad you’re keeping it standard not for value / sacrilege reasons but just because it seems to be a naturally perfect snapshot of the early 90s. Especially in that yellow with grey wheels.

Really like this and the work being done, must admit the wheels are one of my all time favourites just a really clean, simple design that works really well.

Thanks for the comments. The original turbo coolant hoses have now been changed, one of those lovely jobs that should be easy but was a complete pain due to lack of access. The original 25 year old hoses had seen better days as can be seen. That just left one of the heater hoses to replace as the only hose on the car that hadn’t been replaced which was in reasonable condition given it’s age. Hopefully now all the air is out the cooling system as it’s holding decent temps so fingers crossed all good! And now on to the next job of changing the weeping rear main engine seal so a new clutch is going in at the same time.

I hope you're going to do the pcv system at the same time. Full PCV system was done about 3k miles ago, it still passes the glove test so I don’t think that’s the cause of the rear main seal letting go.

Time for a long overdue update on this, time constraints over the last year and other more pressing life issues means the Volvo has only been out on the road twice in the last two years! First up the clutch and rear main seal were replace in November 2019, this was carried out by a local Volvo specialist so no pictures of this I’m afraid. Other than being parked up at work after collection. A couple of small jobs were carried out in 2020. Namely replacement of the rear T-5R badge after the original was showing its age and not quite in the correct place. Original New Fitted The original paint protection film on the rear wing tops was also past its best so replaced with correct genuine Volvo items Right side before After - hard to make out it’s still there with the replacement! Left side before And with replacement That was everything carried out in 2020, there are still some further improvements needed to the rear of the car, namely the lamp clusters, number plate lamps and spoiler brackets. The last month has seen complete replacement of both handbrake cables and all the shoes, springs and hardware on the parking brake. All the parts ready to go on Rear seat out to access the cables and treasures found amounting to 2 hair clips (no use to me!), £1.49 in loose change (winning!) and an unpleasant sticky substance under the carpet that I’m yet to investigate further. Planning a complete strip out of the interior soon though to give everything a deep clean. And with the job completed and all back together. Rear mudflaps were done so these have been replaced with new items, vast improvement. Old New All 20 wheel bolts have been replaced with new ones too, the chrome on the originals was showing it’s age That pretty much brings everything up to date, just waiting on taking it for an mot (when I can get a booking) and hoping to get another couple of jobs sorted out this weekend, time and weather permitting.

That's looking great Have you checked behind the rear arch and sill covers for rust yet? I did on my 850R a few months ago and found lots of damp soil and surface rust under both the rear arches.

Sill covers I’m looking to replace with a new set in the next year, so I’ll have a look at what the condition is like then before it goes for paint.
Rear arch liners will be coming out soon for a good clean. it looks to have been waxoiled up there so fingers crossed all will be ok.

Another little job ticked off tonight. Replacement of the headlamp wiper blades and wiper arm plastic covers. The wiper blades are the incorrect items, being too short and the rubber blade has started to fall apart. One of the arm plastic covers has cracked so used the opportunity to replace both. Before New genuine Volvo parts ready to go on After
