Long time listener, first time caller.
I LOVE those really long threads that go on for days and days with every man and his dog commenting, so with that in mind I wanted to share my Volvo, my plans and see if I could get all the Retro Riders with Swedish barges to post up!
My recent purchase and first Volvo is this 1990 740 GLE saloon, It was one of those typical bought unseen ebay cars (not my first) I vowed never to do it again after a shocking MK2 Escort that almost bought me to tears when it arrived on the trailer but that's a story for another day.
Anyway back to the Volvo, Listed as low owner car that had failed its MOT after 3 years in a garage, thought if it could get it cheap enough it could tick all the boxes, sleeper, family car, drifter etc, so chucked a bid of £255 and waited and waited and waited, checked the listing and I won! £100 delivery on top, I got it dropped straight to my local Volvo Specialist CD MOTORS Chelmsford, £470 later with the MOT list cleared, main cost was steering rack and power steering pump amongst little bits but overall a solid car.
I went to pick it up on route to work on the Monday morning and at this point I still hadn't actually seen the car in the flesh!
Rocked up and I must say on first appearances I was staggered at how well it looked, paint is fresh, interior has that typical comfy Volvo feel with no rips or saggy headlining and apart from the sunroof being sealed shut it all felt rather good!! Turned the car over and the 2.3 NA engine sprung into life, 4 speed with overdrive felt smooth and so set off on my way to work grinning like a Cheshire cat!
Kept thinking though as I cruised to work about how much potential this car has, all I would need to do is give it a good clean, lower it, LSD and supporting upgrades to drop a trusty Volvo turbo engine in.
So far i've got 70mm lowering springs and a dream as money is holding me back on the rest of the mods but over time I want to have a BMW killing Swedish rocket!!

I want to have a BMW killing Swedish rocket!! I have two in the stable for the BMW killing Swede contention. First is the Molvo: Miata chassis and 302 power. You may or may not have stumbled on the build thread. The second is a 760 that I accidentally bought for $800 Cnd . Was cheap because the partially open window that you can see in the picture had been open for 2 years while stored outside. Owner ASSUMED that floors and interior were gone. Not the case. Bonus is that it is a fully runing car and this Ford 302 V8 resides under the bonnet It did occur to me that a Volvo V8 would have been the best option for the P1800 Wagon, but they are not easy or affordable this side of the pond. Looking forward to seeing your build progress.

Hi,
I thought I recognised this and trawled through completed 740 eBay adds to check. I know it very well as my father bought in about 1992 or there about from K Cars in York. My mother then owned it for many years when he replaced it with a P2 V70. I had it for several years but never really did much with it as other projects/life got in the way. One of the eBay pictures of it just about to emerge from hibernation in my garage.
Can tell you quite a lot about its history if it’s of interest and glad it’s gone to someone who’s going to look after it🙂
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil, Thanks for the message, id love to hear some more about the car! I was wondering when the sunroof got glued shut? I spent a fair bit getting it through its MOT and yesterday the alternator belt snapped in rush hour traffic but I didn't care as I absolutely love the car and I can promise its gone to a good home I cant get over how clean the paint is! I've still got the K cars dealership sticker in the rear window! Joe.

Really glad you like it! The sun roof was sealed shut years ago - so long ago that I don’t ever remember it being any other way. I went with my dad to K Cars to collect the 240 that this one replaced. The 740 was having its pre-delivery inspection prior to being bought by a guy called Barry Swallow who either was or had been a York City player. I think he was even captain of the side in the heady days when they reached the old second division before they crashed out into obscurity. Two years later he part exchanged it for a new one and the old man got first refusal.
Much loved car, Main dealer serviced (K Cars and maybe Ray Chapmans in Malton) and garaged right up until its retirement as main car in about 2002 when it was replaced by the previously mentioned P2 V70. Then spent many years as my mothers run-around hardly doing any miles as the V70 did all the long journeys. I think servicing then went down to local garage level but still done regularly. Having said that, I’ve no idea how old the cam belt is but suspect it is the same age as the fan belt.
It collected its share of battle scars while in my mothers care including one notable incident where she had a bit of a coming together with a large, rather unforgiving, lump of concrete in a multi-storey car park. All these things were repaired but if you look carefully at one of the rear doors (can’t remember which one) you may be able to see evidence of the repair. Cracking paint job though. The firm was called something like Auto Refinishers in Dunnington. During the time she had it, the speedo stopped clocking up miles (common stripped drive gear problem) but i doubt that its out by more than 10,000 miles.
Move on to 2014 and Mums on her own, decides the Volvos are too big and buys herself a Toyota Yaris. Hmm, ok, I bought it and she paid. Not a Volvo but to be fair, it was exactly the right car for her. Sold the V70 for far more than I expected but it was low mileage, immaculate, full service history and people will pay over the odds for that stuff. Didn’t need it myself as I already had a V70 D5. Kept the 740 as it had been a family car for such a long time. Replaced a snapped tank strap and drove it from York to Hampshire where its been up until a few weeks ago when the wife decided for me that enough was enough. I’m sure many of you know how that works....
I drove it around on sunny days until the MOT ran out and then had to replace either one or both rear callipers (not cheap!) to get it through the next one. Still had the odd outing but my 300ZX is really the tool of choice for high days and holidays. Final straw for me was when I started it up one day and industrial quantities of what looked like oil (may have been power steering fluid looking at your earlier post) poured all over the road. Drove it into the garage and forgot about it but really needed it gone in the end as I don’t like the 300ZX outside in the winter.
That AA badge lived on the front of many of our family cars with the first one being a Wolsey 1660. No idea where it came from but I do remember taking it to pieces with the old man to re-paint the yellow bit when I was probably only about 8 or 9.
There was a ton of paperwork with it when sold and the original radio. It also had the moulded floor trays. Will add more as and when (if!) the little grey cells come up with anything else.

Wow, I love stories like that!! Really appreciate the time you've taken to reply and give me some much needed info, hadn't even noticed the repair so it must be a pretty good one, what Volvo hasn't had some form of knock in its time!? I'm gutted as the guy that got it from you didn't give me the service history, he said he would send it in the post but hasn't which is very annoying as I love sifting through it! Did he leave any with you as id be happy to pay post on anything you have? Did you want the AA badge back? I love it but if it means a lot to you then id happily send it back What was the guy like who bought it as I never met him as I got it recovered back to Essex!

The guy that bought it was an interesting Irish Chap. Deals in a bit of this and a bit of that, much of it scrap cars. Met him when he bought my V70 spares car. Said he was interested in the 740 as something to run for himself. He got all the history but I think I have his business and home addresses if they’re any help.
Keep the AA badge. It belongs with the car

Any news? Looks cool as a cucumber with the 70mm drop alone.

Love the look of these old things. This pic from July 2018 shows a car that belonged to my youngest boy's football coach. Sadly it is no more as one of his son's rolled it.
