Firstly, just to be clear - my Dad really does not want to sell the car and if he can get suitable storage, it will be locked away. The car has sentimental value - it was a gift from all of us to him for his 60th birthday back in December 2010. He has been the owner / registered keeper since and has looked after it well. It is his daily driver. We are only selling as he has upgraded to an Individual E60 550i. The reality of paying two lots of tax, insurance, servicing costs, etc. has finally hit and the sensible thing is to sell it!
Optional Extras:
BMW 'Individual' Velvet Blue Paintwork
BMW 'Individual' Champagne Nappa Leather
BMW 'Individual' Velvet Blue Piping to Interior
Extended Leather to Door Handles
Xenon Headlights
Heated Front Seats
18" M Parallel Staggered Alloy Wheels
Standard E39 Sport Spec:
Anthracite Head Lining, Shadow Line Gloss Black Exterior Trim, Angel Eye Headlights, Celis LED Rear Lights, M-Tech Front Apron, M-Tech Rear Apron, M-Tech Side Skirts, Sport Suspension, 5 Speed Switchable Sports Automatic, Tiptronic, Sport Multi-Function Steering Wheel, Digital Climate Control, Cruise Control, BMW RDS Stereo, CD Multi Changer, Electric Windows x 4, Electric Door Mirrors, Power Steering, Front Centre Arm Rest, Rear Head Rests, Remote Central Locking, Alarm & Immobiliser, Front Fog Lamps, BMW Torch, BMW Tool Kit, Genuine BMW Spare Wheel (17").
M54B30 / 3.0 Litre / 24 Valve / 231 BHP / 35 MPG
Mechanically sound - starts first turn of the key, even if left standing for weeks. Gets up to temperature and sits there all day long. No overheating. No leaks, apart from a very slight weep from the rocker cover gasket (common on this era of E39). 170k Miles. These M54's are great, reliable and robust units that seldom go wrong. EML light intermittently comes on, and has done for the past 4 years. In no way affects the car, and the last time it was diagnosed, no faults found. Most likely a tiny air leak on one of the pipes.
Oil & Filter Service completed at time of MOT in May 2019. There was a bill for over £900 in May 2017 with various work completed.
Gearbox was serviced twice in our ownership, the last one being in 2017. Gear changes are as they should be, very smooth and effortless. Sport mode engages fine, as the Tiptronic manual function.
The Sport suspension gives the car a very composed ride, but not too bumpy like the current M Sports.
Brakes are good and stop the car well, with no juddering or squeaks.
It has been maintained well, and had anything it's ever needed. During ownership, it's had two water pumps, belts, tensioners & pulleys, front suspension overhaul, new batteries, new alternator, new DISA valve, a few sets of tyres, brakes discs and pads replaced a few times, rocker cover gaskets, new steering rack gaiter, fuel pipes, rear coil springs, etc.
It's a lovely car to drive, so smooth and quiet and happily sits a well above the speed limit for long periods without any fuss. The whole package puts modern cars to shame.
Returns 35+mpg on a run, and around town manages 28mpg, which is perfectly acceptable.
It has an excellent set of matching Nexen NFera SU1 Tyres all around - fronts are 235/40/18 and the rears are 265/35/18.
It isn't mint or new - as with most E39s of this vintage, there is some rust bubbling on the rear arches and a few spots here and there, including the lower sill skirts. Paint has flaked in a few places and there is some oxidisation bubbling on the shadow black window surrounds. The boot has a few bubbles, but this is cleaner than a lot of examples out there. Rear bumper has a few scuff marks. OSF fog lamp is cracked (cheap on eBay). Headlight lenses would benefit from a polish and would benefit from new BMW centre caps for wheels. Marks, blemishes and stone chips as to be expected for the age. Spend a few hundred on paint and rust correction, and you will have a very clean car.
Generally, it's a presentable motor and looks stunning in flesh. Velvet Blue, in my option, is one of the nicest colours to ever grace a BMW.
The interior is in very good order for the year, with slight wear to the driver's seat bolster. The Champagne Nappa Leather has taken the years very well, and it's such a nice cabin to be in. The Velvet Blue piping gives it a nice edge. Would benefit from a deep clean to bring it back to it's former glory, but still looks good and there are no rips or tears, just the usual wear on the driver's seat bolster.
Everything pretty much works as it should, including all windows, Xenon lights, horn, wipers, trip computer, cruise control, etc. No pixel loss on either the stereo, climate or dashboard binnacle (rare on an E39!). Needs a new rear parking sensor, as currently they work intermittently. Windscreen washer pipes need a blast, as they are a bit blocked up at the moment.
Air Conditioning is Ice Cold (handy in the current climate). Heating also works very well.
E39s were at the high point of BMW build quality, and car is still tight and solid compared to other cars of similar vintage. In fact, it actually does feel more solid than his newer E60. A testament to the E39 build quality.
The price is now reduced to £3350, and there is not much movement on this. It had been reduced from over £4k initially. It is quite possibly the only one for sale in the UK with this colour and spec, and you will struggle to find another one. He will regret selling this, and I know secretly, he is hoping it doesn't go.
