	Hi, Can anyone offer some advice please? I’m replacing my wooden garage doors with some new ones and I’m wondering the best way to paint them (for longevity). I assume it would be (brush paint) knott stopper 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of a decent exterior wood paint for a top coat. Ronseal seem to do a good range of coloured top coats www.ronseal.com/for-home/doors-windows/exterior-wood-paint/10-year-weatherproof-wood-paint/ but I welcome any advice! Thanks Gareth

	If they are softwood, you need a good quality wood primer (After knotting compound) followed by oil based undercoat, followed by 2 coats of good quality exterior gloss or satinwood. Dulux I always use. I would not go staight from primer to top coat. You need a decent coat of undercoat if you want them to last.

	If its a proper colour then you have to go for Ronseal etc but if you want a natural finish I use an solvent based treatment by www.premierq.co.uk/wood-preservative/ Any water based paint just stays on top of the wood but good solvent based treatment goes deep into the wood and it last much longer. Its needs re-doing every few years but my workshop is still perfect and its 8+ years old...
