Hi Tom , I’m sure I’ve got an old magazine from the early 1980s with the metro in, can’t remember what magazine it is but it has a red Fiat Strada on the front. Great find by the way. thanks i have bought a few of the magazines it features in, will look out for the one you mentioned

If I find it you can have it, give it a mate to read and he only mentioned it a few weeks ago, he said I’ve got that old magazine of yours to which I replied, oh don’t worry do what you want with it, will hopefully see him on Tuesday and see if he still has it.

Outstanding!
I've just spent most of this rainy afternoon sorting a couple of hundred mags in to order, that CCC was one I flicked through. Superb stuff, it's brilliant to see this car still around. Looking forward to progress!

Thanks DarrenW even though this car has been a rally car most of its life it started out as a metro plus model the only metro plus British Leyland built this pre launch brochure is the only info i can find from research it looks like the metro plus/plus parts range never happened wood and Pickett took over the metro plus name and added their own styling

the extinguishers look like halon, that's proper retro ! superior to modern gas extinguishers but think it was banned due to cfc malarky

Yep green rings bells as Halon, proper inert gas kill the fire stuff.
As an aside, I worked for someone who did up mini's and metros back in the day and he swore that the 1.3HLS was nearly always faster than the MG metro that replaced it. No real idea why, but enough came through the gates for various fixes for him to know.
Nice project, keep the updates coming.

I don't think ive got the right words to be able to say much about this. It must be the most historicly interesting Metro in existance. With values rising on Metros I'm sure this is somewhere near the top. Its got connection to Abingdon and wood and picket with the Metro Plus bits, does any other Metro have this? I don't think ive ever seen those stripes before. To me its like the Abingdon works Mini Cooper S of Metros, and the magazine features to back it all up. Astounding.

Astounding. thanks, the car has a very interesting history which i am still trying to piece together i am in contact with a previous owner who bought it off Dave bulman, he has some interesting info and hopefully some pictures I'm trying to get in contact with Dave bulman, i hope he is still alive as he would have all the answers i believe this to be the actual car in the brochure it has the same prototype squared off windscreen rubber the passenger rear quarter glass has the triplex logo stamped wrong, its fuzzy and looks whiter than the other glass logos when photographed this is the same on the brochure

Was the car built by abingdon as a rally car ie rollcage fitted etc, or was this all done by the mag? I feel the need to know everything about this car, its sent my inner geek into overdrive. *its just dawned on me how much of a shame it is that the car doesnt have its original engine. Built by Abingdon?

Was that who made it? Wood and picket? I've seen some of their work via my land rover persuasion, wow!

Built by Abingdon? Dave bulman ( technical advisor to BL motorsport) he owned and built the car, the build is covered with several features in cars and car conversions it was is own personal rally car that he used he has previously built a tr7 www.trdrivers.com/tr7_v8_rally_car.htmlthe car has had several engines it is life the engine was still with the car when i bought it but the owner was selling it separate and wanted a lot of money as he knows what its worth but it was too much of a risk to buy not knowing its condition and would be a massive money pit if it needed work

Also a case of the engine was worth more to you than somebody else ? If he still has the engine worth a mate getting a price ? Suppose on an ex-competition car it makes much less difference anyway. When they go bang they are swapped out ! James
